Here is my Might Have Been A Dumb*** story. Feel free to comment and post your own such stories.

I went down to the Chantilly gun show today, and looked around for a while, and I found something that really got my eye.

It was a Beretta 96. With Night Sights. Good condition, but worn finish. I like worn finish, though. Gives a gun character. I even checked the bore (hurrah for Hoppe's Borelight!), and Saw that It Was Good.

It was $299. I easily had the money.

I passed it up. The show is now over until October, and there aren't any other shows around here 'till then, except one in Bealeton when I'm out of town.

I am currently in a state of self-***-kicking.

And you should be.

Kind of like my pal at Sears who passed up a .357 mag Desert Eagle NIB for $400 from a desperate seller.... not only does he kick his own butt, other people verbally do it for him too!

Sorry to hear of your misfortune, but think of it this way... next time there is a good deal, you're a bit more likely to jump on it from past experience.

closest thing i did today was buying a couple 22 snapcaps without noticing they're 22short, not 22lr... but that's just $1, and i can still chamber them manually (nice that my p22 has an external extractor!).

hmm. i am kicking myself for not checking the price on the panzerfaust(!) that was there saturday, but that i couldn't find sunday.

i DID keep myself from doing something stupid - almost bought a s&w victory model for $150 before it occured to me that 38s&w != 38spl. ahem.

hmm... maybe i should have picked up one of the mossberg 500's with extensions for $150...

also passed up a model 10 for $245 out the door. just wasn't sure on that one.

mag, is dale city too far for you to go? it's in three weeks. leesburg in mid september. no idea where you're starting from.

Dumbest thing I ever did is sell my Kahr MK40 Elite 98 so I could buy an AR15.

NEVER SELL A GUN YOU LIKE :(

OK. I'll play since I did a dumb*** thing yesterday at the range. After slidelock on my 1911, the mag would not drop. I pushed the mag catch in with my left thumb, and stuck my right thumb into the slide, pushing on the mag, which then dropped free. The slide immediately slammed forward on my right thumb, whereupon it bled like a stuck pig. It's very sore today, too. What a dumb***.

Passed up on a complete Dillon Square Deal B for only $150.

Paid $500 for a Charles Daly 1911 Field Grade. (First gun, I didn't know I was overpaying)

Didn't pick up a FAL with 4 mags for $250 from the guy I bought a Springfield Loaded 1911 for $450.

Only bought one gun when the shop was having a guns at cost + $10 sale.

Waited a long time to get a C&R.

Back in '09 ...

I had 3 matching Colt 1911s for CCW, I mean exact.

I was at the range and for education purposes I removed the extractor from one to show - yes the gun works without an extractor. It will chamber and fire...

I left the range , and went to some bad parts of town to run errands and such. Came home and about bedtime I reached in my pocket for a recipt from a purchase....there was the extractor. So I go to the range bag to put the extractor back in....both guns had one. Guess which gun didn't ? Guess which gun I had been running errands with? Sigh....at least I had a model 36 on person for a BUG while I was out and about....:uhoh: :scrutiny:

What.

Okay. I take it back. I was stupid. YOU were a dumb***.

I missed out on a CZ-452 LUX for 299 NIB once. My local dealer had it on his shelf for FIVE DAYS and i was broke enough that i agonized over the price (i COULD have afforded it though) and when i finally got the nerve to pick it up it was gone.

It was one of those limited edition versions with (IIRC) 28" barrel and WONDERFUL wood. :(

Holy blown breeches... it hurts just to look at that.
Sorry for your misfortune, Black Snowman.

Here's my own 'moment'.

So, like, I'm green as hell, on my first trip to an indoor range.

The other customers, regulars, are all done shooting and just sitting around.
They just keep snickering at this dumba** walking up and downrange every time
to hang up fresh cardboard.

I'd never heard of motorized target carriers 'til then.
I thought that was a lightswitch or some kind of buzzer beside me.

How MANY times have I seen that happen?:D

The follower shelf climbed over the slidestop lug, and held the magazine.
next time it happens...and there will be a next time...line the takedown notch up with the stop, just like you do during a field strip, and pop the stop out slightly. No need to bring it all the way out...and drop the mag. Realign the lug with the takedown notch and push it back in place.
With just a little practice, you can do it in about 5 seconds.

Luck! ...and put some ice on that thumb...

A trip back home to Denmark when I was 22. A family friend had some Mausers his father had brought home from WWII and left him in the will. He was getting rid of them for the equivalent of ~$30USD. They seemed clunky and weird to me at the time, what with that odd slide and all, so I didn't bother.

MIGHT have been a dumb***? No "might" there.

Don't even get me started on the polished blue Colt Python in like new condition I could have had for $500.00

Sold a nearly pristine Colt 1903 Hammerless made in 1930 to a buddy who wouldn't quit pestering me to sell it to him. The pistol had survived over 70 years without a scratch, and this bonehead drops it on a rough concrete floor within a month of my selling it to him! :banghead:

(I need a kleenex)

In 1995 I was visiting the Poconos with a girlfriend. In one of the many antique shops in the area, they had (on consignment) an Artillery Luger complete w/ stock and drum magazine for $1200. It was a WWI bringback and part of an estate sale. At the time, I didn't have $1200 in spare cash laying around, but there was nothing stopping me from putting it on a credit card. No question about it, I was definitely a dumbass.

Live in my county in Missouri happens all the time. Unless you buy a permit ($10) for every show or weekend expidition you go on your out of luck. No pistol permits on weekends and some counties even require you to fill out serial # etc... before you even get permit which basically eliminates gun show buys entirely:banghead:

Best miss, could be last year $450 for my choice of a 4" or 6" Python (out of funds) or the guy who had health problems several years back selling all his S/W collection. To not make his wife confused as to what was more valuable than what, he sold everything at $250 a gun. He did not feel like messing with it at the time. He had at least 30 N frames dating from modern times to the 50's. I showed up as sson as I found out about it 2 days after the sale started to find him flush out:banghead:

I passed up a like new Glock 23 with two hi-caps that my friend only wanted $350 for. That was dumb.

Passed on a VP-70 with 3 magazines for $350 Barely used.

Passed on a Colt King Cobra for $350 (yeah that was just 2 weeks ago stupid me)

Never really have come across the 'deal of a lifetime' but I hope i never have another 'slipped through my fingers' story.
