the ''only'' guns you actually need....

I could get by paring my collection down to:

.30-06 bolt action rifle for all big game hunting (Savage 110)
12 ga pump shotgun with different choke options for all bird hunting and as the big HD gun(Rem 870)
.22 rifle for varmints (10/22)
.357 revolver for open carry/hiking/nightstand gun (Security Six)
.38 spl snubbie for CC duty and backup nightstand work (j frame 438)

Happily I don't need to make that choice! I have several alternatives for all but the CC piece since I'm new to that.

Since my financial resources are limited, when I made my decision as to what firearms I needed, I chose them based on what ammo I thought would be the easiest to find in the future.

the "only" guns I need? nornally you only hear gun banners talking about needs and guns, nobody needs an assault rifle, nobody needs more than 10 rounds, nobody needs a pistol etc etc etc. I dont subscribe to that line of thinking, and i dont feel the need to justify what i feel I "need".
that said, a gun cabinet is like a tool chest. if you use the tools youd be hard pressed to say which one is more valuable than the other, they all fill a niche.

I'm not sure why people are injecting politics into this thread. The RKBA includes a right to decide what you do or do not personally need. It includes a right not to have any firearms at all! It's the difference between me deciding that I don't want more firearms than I can carry and the state ordering me not to own any more than I can carry. That's a critical distinction. Hording guns does not support the RKBA any more than owning just a few, though if you like to have dozens of them laying around that's fine.

Firearms are not magic totems, they're just tools. If I have a big bulky took I'm not using, I get rid of it. I collect manual typewriters, I don't collect firearms. They're working tools, not ornaments.

I need the ones I need and want. This is a very large group.

I dont need the ones I dont need or want... a smaller group

Need is for animals....

Wants seperate us from them.

There is a difference between need and want when it comes to firearms. I may want a Swiss battle rifle, but I really need a packable versatile brush buster with small game options. I may want a high end 1911, but I really need a concealable magnum revolver.

That has NOTHING to do with whether the government can order you to get rid of firearms IT thinks you don't need.

I'm pretty sure I need a new one every year. The rest get lonely and we can't have that can we?

The more guns I look at and test out the more I find that it becomes harder to distinguish "want" and "need". I thought I only needed a couple different guns and then I made my first couple purchases....suddenly my "needs" went dramatically up! :D

LOL

"Need" seems to be secondary to most of the people's interest in guns here.

However I think it's strange that a compact CC piece wasnt included in the list. Or even a fullsize for open carry, if that's how you roll.

IMO, you need a 'personal defense' handgun on the list.

I CC a full sizerino

the ''only'' guns you actually need....

To get the job done.

#1. shotgun.
#2.defense rifle, ''ar''
#3.deer rifle, sniper rifle
#4. good quality .22 rifle.
#5. good quality handgun

Any lists that doesn't include either a Walther P5 or a Walther PPK isn't much of a list at all. But I'd agree that a good shotgun, a good deer rifle, a good .22 handgun and rifle, and a decent carry gun are among the essentials that every household should have close by.

If you can control your wants then you have more cash for the needs (ammo)

I'd rather own a few high quality guns then a bunch of cheap stuff.

Well, I for one disagree. I think having a LARGE quantity of guns not only supports the RKBA, but also, freedom, liberty and the constitution. The more you have, the more people you can arm in a scenario similar to the one that our forefathers wrote the 2A for. Keep in mind the fact that many people don't see a need to own any guns at all. When those people finally do realize the need, where will they get them? They will find people like me and many others that have more than we "need" handing them out.

When one talks about gun needs for home defense a good home defense plan is just as important. Without either the gun or the plan leads to a possible disaster. The plan should consist of both defensive and a offensive instructions.

for whatever my $0.02 is worth.

1. Shotgun- 12ga, Mossberg 500, or Remington 870
2. Handgun- Glock, 1911A1, Smith .357 3-6"
3. Rifle-AR, AK, M-14, or Bolt Action in .25 caliber or better
4. Rimfire- Ruger 10/22, Marlin 60 or Bolt Action of comparable quality

Personally, any modern handgun would do. But of all the styles and brands, these all offer the most versatility and a HUGE surplus of parts.
In my lifetime, there will always be parts available for any of these weapons(as long as things stay relatively the same).
But I think that guns that are bought for neccesity should always have some sort of "defensive" element to them. We don't live on the frontier anymore, "bad" people are always the number one threat anywhere on earth. Yeah, I know the XD or M&P or CZ are all pretty much equals or exceed the 1911, Smith, Glock. But they aren't much better, and if the company falls,(think Steyr, or other rare pistol) Your going to have trouble finding parts. The same with the rifles, like Sig 556, or Microtechs, or Steyr Scouts. All the guns that I have selected are bread and butter platforms, that have unlimited potential. Whether through the military or using a gunsmith.

4. ruger 10/22

i have alot of WANTS...but i don't feel like i NEED anything. except ammo

I actually like threads like this. I like to hear what others consider necessities or wants and reassess what I have and need/want. I don't look at it like people are telling me what I have to have.

Anyways, I agree with others that the OP is neglecting a self defense handgun.

As for me, one of the things I've neglected is a .22. I know it's a basic staple, but I don't feel I need one. I live in a suburban area and don't have a varmint problem or hunt varmints. It's also not high on my want list. Other than the cost of .22 ammo, I don't really have a desire for one. I'll probably get one one day, but right now I have other things I'd rather spend the money on.

No one needs a .22 anything.

Now if you want one or have one and like it for plinking or whatever, fine.

Need on the otherhand. Nope.

Needs...
Shotgun
Ak-47
a reliable handgun.

Extras of the above and sufficient ammo.
