ccsniper +1.

There isn't anything you can't do with a 12 GA and pair of brass ones. You can take a grizzly, but he might take you after the shot. You can take every type of game if you can get close enough. It is an excellent HD weapon.

.22lr, cause everyone needs to learn the fundamentals.

#1 - Utility Rifle - my particular choice, AR15
#2 - Shotgun - Mossberg 500
#3 - Full Size Handgun - 1911 5"
#4 - Compact/CC Handgun - Glock 19
#5 - Pocket Carry - SW 642
#6 - Hiking/Backpacking carry - SW 60 3"
#7 - .22LR Rifle - Ruger 10/22
#8 - .22LR Handgun - Ruger MKII/III

My twenty two's are fun guns, I don't consider them a need but I still would own at least one.

Agreed, I just didn't see them as a "need". I'm going to love getting a .22 pistol as soon as I scrape up the cash. It'll make range time so much more affordable.

I love AR's. Enjoy shooting them, enjoy tinkering with them. Enjoy adding useless crap to them to make them look cool and function better. That being said, I never saw the "need" for an AR (or any other "battle rifle" for that matter). Shotgun, centerfire rifle (.30 caliber would seem to take care of most anything), .22, and pistol.

For those who use an AR for home defense, I just hope I'm not your neighbor. For those of you waiting for the coming societal collapse, remember Admiral Yamamoto was not worried about American's with the latest WWII military weaponry (Garand's, Carbine's, and Thompson's). He was worried about the citizenry with their hunting guns. "...a rifle behind every blade of grass..."

Besides, like others have said, need is a subjective term. If you need an AR for peace of mind, thats cool. I never thought their should be restrictions on any firearms. Personally, I'd like supressor's on some of my guns for my peace of mind.

If I ever got in financial trouble and needed to slim down my gun collection, I would keep a Remington 870, a 1911, a bolt action .22, and a hunting rifle (bolt more than likely). But I'd miss my AR's and Garand's, and other toys.

I have seen quite a few posts like this...
and I see that people think a 22 rifle is under rated. funny, as you can carry 1000 rounds and the rifle in the wilderness for quite some time. You cant eat a elk or deer with a family before it goes bad?

so my question is if a 22 isnt needed, who would survive longer in the wilderness.... or a 22...

need need need a 22...

What I have and I feel pretty well set up...

Shotgun: Mossberg 500 (18.5 and 28" barrels) 12 ga

Defensive rifle: AK-47 and 74

Backup rifle: SKSs

Defensive/carry pistols: Glock 19, Kimber 1911

Small/backup carry pistols: Kahr PM9 and Kel-Tec P3AT

.22 rifle: Ruger 10/22

.22 pistol: Ruger 22/45

I didn't include any magnum or bolt rifles because I don't hunt, therefore I don't have any.

I am actually trying to get to that point
I have to keep:
Moss 500
AR 18" 6.8 spc
CZ 9mm
Marlin 60
Gamo 177 pellet rifle

I have but don't really need:
JC Higgins 12ga
AR 24" 5.56
Winchester 1200
Stevens 410/22 o/u
Ranger 12ga SXS
H&R 22lr
Yugo SKS

BUGUDY, I'd rethink that SKS. It's a dead nuts reliable and reasonably powerful rifle. And it's in 7.62, sharing ammo commonality with the AK-47. Supposed to be more accurate than a 47, too. I love my $89 SKS I bought almost 20 years ago.

I need my .22 WMR! I went on a mancation with 5 friends. They all took big game rifles and laughed at mine. 2 squirrel 2 rabbit and a ferrell pig later I was makin lunch while they where still waitin in the stand. Yeah I need my rifle and its a .22!
I need my CCW! It has kept me safe in the clutch so yeah I need my sig 232!
I need my 20g shotgun to put different birds in the pot and keep me safe at night.

Here are the only guns I "need", sure I could live without most, but the Ma Deuce is something we should all have mounted on the hood of our car :neener:

up onus - I don't know about a 22 to kill a deer or elk. A 22 is a great gun, so is a 338 but depending where you live some guns as a "basic need" differ based on location.

I've never seen it, but I've heard ad naseum that poachers use .22s on deer a lot.
I always thought poachers boiled eggs? Oh, you mean "chinese hunting" poa ching!!!

Needs verses wants hmmmmmm that is tough. I think a 12 guage pump would do most anything I can think of. A 9mm or 45 hand gun is a nice want.
The 12 guage to defend and hunt. Ammo is easy to find or reload. The handgun to defend, protect me/my possessions and my 12 guage.

After more thought I'm going to say 2 identical shot guns 12 guages.

This or similar would do me fine. Yes I know the above is not a pump but I already own this.

A good handgun is a "nice want", LaVere? Yeah, because it's so easy to carry that shotgun around all day, right? Guess you never have to worry about concealment issues, either.
