Does anyone happen to know where, exactly, these matches were held? I spend a good deal of time in Big Bear and would love to visit the location, if it still exists and is accesable.

Honestly, it hadn't occurred to me that it would have been on an actual range. Apparently the very first one was at least partly a promotional stunt and was held in the parking lot of a ski lodge. Based on that, I'd figured they would have just found some spot in the forest for subsequent contests.

From the late 50's until the early 90's my family had a cabin in Big Bear. The area became known sometime in the 60's as Moon Ridge. It wasn't all that uncommon to see sportsmen carrying handguns even in Big Bear proper. I honestly hadn't even heard of the Leatherslap contests until I was in my teens.
Even into my teens kids could hike out from the cabin with a rifle or shotgun and no one would think anything of it. Until the 70's we shot behind the cabin. But as more and more cabins were built that finally ended.

Looks like 44 Magnum is okay to shoot there but 45 Schofield isn’t?

Still, not terrible pricing, assuming one could get a range.

They just mention large magnum cartridges larger then 44 mag are restricted. 45 Schofield or 45 Colt should be ok. But not 454 Casul or 500 S&W magnum.
