Well...

A Self Defense rifle should be:
- Reliable
- Rugged
- Field accurate to < 3 MOA
- Chambered in a useful cartridge
- Ammo should be readily available and affordable.

Should also probably be:
- Light weight
- Easily carried
- Subtle in appearance

The 580 Series Mini-14 woody checks all those boxes.

Unfortunately, political posts like this will get the thread shut down, so let’s avoid them. Nice thread, hate to see it go.

I recall a long time ago someone said the Mini-14 is the rifle to have when you're away from your toolbox. I ask you, how many of us carry, while hunting or whatever, a full complement of tools and spare parts on our persons or even in our vehicles?

Well......since you asked. I carry a 1/4" socket set with breaker bar, adj.wrench, pocket screwdrivers, 3xflashlights, 12V compressor, emergency jump box, tire pressure guage, fix-a-flat, lugnut wrench, jack, prybar, hammer, entrenching tool/ axe, OBD2 scan tool, complete set of spare fuses, an extra ignition coil, one of each spare bulb for all the exterior lighting, an extra alternator relay, brake switch stopper, bungee cords, paracord, a road flare, first aid kit, a Camillus ASEK, SIG P6, 83 rounds of 9mm, Bushmaster AR, and 170 rounds of .223 in my van.

But my Mini is way too pretty to put in the trunk, lol.

What? No Camillus Boy Scout knife?.....Scandalous!
ETA: The ASEK can be used to open cans, but how in the heck do you open a cool one around the camp fire in the evening?

If one were shopping for a Mini 14, what would be the differences between the different series (ie. 580, 581, 582 and 583).

Understand, the "later" models are supposed to be improved in the accuracy dept. so assume the 583 would be more likely to be more accurate than the others??

Well...

The 580 Series - was the rollout of the new castings and tooling, and the redesigned recoil and ejection systems.

Better fit/finish/function, but apparently the earlier ones got the legacy barrels.

Am pretty sure that by the 581 Series, the new tapered barrels were on line.

Post that, don't know if there has been any changes to the line.

-There's always the P-38 in the wallet for the cans and any square corner for the bottles... .

Never leave home without a "John Wayne"... Don't really know how it got the name. P-51 on the key ring.

Still nice to have a rifle you don't have to always be working on, though spares are good to have.

With the can openers... P-38 and P-51... they're small and large, respectively. These and the aircraft did come about in John Wayne's era. I just don't know where those dots connect yet.

Just one of those things... whenever I mention opening cans with a P-38, Mom's usual first thought is I'm probably talking about shooting it open. To some people, they're can openers... not P-38's.

Now, I was thinking back about accuracy complaints with Mini-14's... try, or don't, Russian steel case 55gr FMJ at 50yds. It might qualify as combat accurate for suppressive fire, or something... what I witnessed looked like a shotgun pattern across a 6" circle... it was by no means anything I'd recommend hunting game with.

- Subtle in appearance

A generally innocuous presence in appearance is one of the bigger reasons I opted to keep a wood-stocked Mini in my truck instead of my AR-15 or its ilk. Snowflake, ovine leftists aren't so prone to be alarmed by the appearance (as little as that should mean to otherwise intelligent people) of the little Ruger as they might otherwise be with the look of an evil, black "assault" rifle.

This is the pouch that services my 5816. Contains.... 2 x 20 round loaded mags... 1 x 5 round mag... Sling... Tech Sight apertures... Otis Ripcord... Mini Pouch 002.JPG Tool for trigger guard.

They are going to need WAAAY more spaces...
At least in the "People's Republik of Lawrence". ;)

We seem to be getting more of those types around my part of the country too. And I honestly don't know that the appearance of the rifles, Mini-whichever vs AR, makes as much difference to them as we've thought in the past.

Oh, you'd be surprised...

Most couldn't tell the difference between a shotgun and a shovel... but they know an EBR when they see one.

If you are in the market for a Mini-14, you are in luck! Every year in the first 2 weeks of August Walmart clearances their prior-year gun inventory. Many of their stores will stock 1 or 2 mini-14s. It will be a plain ranch version with wood stock and 5 round magazine. Last 3 years in a row they have clearance priced at $399.88. It happens fast so check now to see if your local store has one. The price may update this week in the systems but not yet be re-signed. Have the clerk do a price check!

Thanks for the heads up; I'd jump on a deal like that!
We have 3 Walmarts and all quit selling firearms of any kind several years ago. The super Walmart restocked a few guns a month or two ago but have only a dozen or so guns (a couple of 10/22's, a few shotguns, a Marlin lever action, probably 30-30 and several bolt action center fire rifles).

Nah, none of the Walmarts around here offer anything other than misconduct regarding various firearm clearances. Much like during the rimfire shortage.

And that's a shame, as for $400 I might just bite.
