Cornmeal has been the chosen filler since time began. I read a study, a long while back, that determined that cornmeal has a mild abrasive quality that's measureable over extended time/use. Not sumpin to panic over...just sumpin to consider.
I switched to pure oatbran in the 70's. It's very soft & compresses (displaces air ), IMHO, even better. I use it w/smokeless & BP. Can pack it down tite, atop a thin card wad, & accurately measure space remaining for the bullet.
Use it to keep 8 grs. Unique against the flash hole in .45 Colt. Also for BP in Sharps .50 - 2.5''.
Would use it in ROA's, 'cept don't shoot reduced loads. :-D
