The Smirk from Delaware & the Second Amendment
A Democratic gun-owner-bashing YouTube moment.

By Michelle Malkin

Sen. Joe Biden is the embodiment of snide. Snide is the embodiment of the left-wing attitude toward gun owners. So when snide Joe Biden confronted a YouTube user who asked Democrat presidential candidates about gun control during a debate Monday night, what unfolded was a Teachable YouTube Moment — the caught-on-tape embodiment of ideological snideness toward the Second Amendment and those who defend it.

“Good evening, America. My name is Jered Townsend from Clio, Michigan,” the YouTube citizen questioner began. “To all the candidates, tell me your position on gun control, as myself and other Americans really want to know if our babies are safe.” Townsend then pulled out his Bushmaster AR-15. “This is my ‘baby,’ purchased under the 1994 gun ban. Please tell me your views. Thank you.”

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson was asked to respond first. CNN host Anderson Cooper noted that Richardson has “one of the highest NRA ratings.” Richardson ran so fast from his record, you could see the Road Runner puff of cartoon smoke billowing at the base of his podium. “The issue here, I believe, is instant background checks,” he sputtered. “Nobody who has a criminal background or is mentally ill should be able to get a weapon.” Richardson babbled for a few more painful seconds about “attacking poverty, bringing people together, dealing with those kids in the ghettos that are heavy users of gun violence,” while the liberals in the audience sat stone-cold silent.

Not a peep from Richardson about the fundamental right to self-defense, of course.

Cooper rescued Richardson by turning to The Smirk from Delaware. “Senator Biden, are you going to be able to keep his ‘baby’ safe?” Snide Joe grabbed his opening: “I’ll tell you what, if that is his baby, he needs help.”

Biden threw red meat to the blue audience. He was richly rewarded with loud applause. Biden showed off his lawyerly credentials and continued to wallop the YouTube gun owner: “I think he just made an admission against self-interest. I don’t know that he is mentally qualified to own that gun.” Why? Because he showed affection for his possession? Because he’s an enthusiastic hobbyist? Because he talked about his gun the way Paris Hilton talks about her Chihuahua or Brad Pitt talks about his Ducati or Al Gore talks about his Priuses and compact fluorescent light bulbs?

The audience roared with laughter at Biden’s mockery of the gun owner’s mental health. So much for politically correct sensitivity toward the mentally ill, eh? “I’m being serious,” Biden chuckled. “Look, we should be working with law enforcement, right now, to make sure that we protect people against people who don’t — are not capable of knowing what to do with a gun because they’re either mentally imbalanced and/or because they have a criminal record, and . . . “

Cooper interrupted Biden’s rant, but he stuck in one more jibe at Jered Townsend, the YouTube gun owner. “I hope he doesn’t come looking for me.” More laughter.

Did any of the other candidates pipe up to defend the gun owner? Not a one. Biden’s snark and smarm spoke for them. The Democrats remain the party of gun-grabbers. Its leading presidential candidates view gun-owners as crackpots and nutballs, and treat the Second Amendment as a nuisance to be circumvented and cured. Big Nanny, not bedrock constitutional principle, rules.

The Democrats are shooting themselves in the foot by taking arrogant potshots at gun owners in a nationally televised debate. A recent Gallup Poll showed that roughly one in three Americans who live in the Midwest and South owns a gun; 27 percent of independents and 23 percent of Democrats identify themselves as gun owners. A majority use their weapons for crime prevention. Who in the Democrat Party speaks for them? Are the majority of women gun owners who own a gun for self-defense “mentally imbalanced,” too?

The Dems can enjoy Biden’s YouTube-able wisecracking now. But come general election time, it may be Second Amendment defenders who get the last laugh.

Hmmmm......honestly I wouldn't have picked him to be a representative for my gun rights.

You're babies?

When you're talking to fellow gun enthusiasts about you guns and want to refer to them that way fine. But in a political debate saying stuff like that just doesn't make sense to me.:scrutiny:

Maybe its just me but it seems like there had to be better gun control submissions than that sent to CNN for the the debate. I just wonder why they would pick this guys submission, maybe because to an anti he would come off as a little creepy? If I had to guess I would say they posed his question to the candidates just get the kind of reaction they did from people like Biden. Its too bad, they guy obviously meant well, but CNN exploited the way the guy looked and worded his question to use it against gun ownership. They could have selected a decent well conceived video but decided instead to look for the one that would be the most damaging to the credibility of legitimate gun owners everywhere.

What scares me more how the crowd reacted to what Biden said. He turned this guys question into a joke and crowd ate it up.

BTW did anyone notice that this video also made the "Moment of Zen" on the Daily Show:banghead:

There's a reason the Democrats picked him to ask that question. You didn't honestly think they'd pick someone who actually represented a normal, responsible, not-creepy gun owner, did you?

I second the motion that CNN undoubtedly had several hundred gun related questions they could have used, but picked this guy because he fit their stereotyped pre-conceived notion of a normal gun owner ... and as a bonus he had a scary looking gun.

There probably wasn't a question from a Bubba with a double barrel sitting on the propped up porch of his double wide asking a huntin' question.

Oh wait, that's John Kerry after Theresa dumps him and cuts off his allowance.

It would have been nice to have Richardson ask him, "What's the twist rate on that Bushie barrel?" It could have made a big difference in how the "D" candidates are perceived in '08. But instead they let their true colors show and Richardson just shut up.

So for '08 the Democrat message to gun owners is "You guys are dangerous and may have mental health problems."

What a shameful performance...

Biden's babbling response was one of the most disorganized and embarrassing verbalizations I've ever seen. CNN did all this on purpose, and I still maintain it was a socio-political "blunder" on their part (though someone here earlier disagreed with my use of that word).

Shame on EVERYONE in this case. Shame!!! :cuss: :cuss: :cuss:

Democrats don't need guns to shoot them selves in the foot. Time and time again they manage to do it with their big mouths.

Hey, if they want to alienate about 30% of voters in their party I say let them.

Biden is an A-Hole and an arrogant hypocrit.
You see Joe Butt Head and his son Butt Head junior are avid spoting clay enthusiasts, and own shot guns, not sure about other guns, but Joe's Body Guard wouldn't be without his.

Even if you forget about guns Joe Biden is a Hypocrit, and he doesnt represent people, he represents Large Law firms and Big money Banks. They are his main contributers, and most of his legislation addresses their concerns.

He is a terrible representative of the people of Delaware, I'm 45 now and I have voted against him every 6 years since my 18th birthday. Biden along with Kennedy are the poster children for term limits and what is wrong with our government.

Right now the Moron is advocating giving the Kurds their own seperate country, which will cause the current problem in Iraq to expand when Turkey and Iran jump into the fight with both feet, and of course we will lose our most important friend in the region right now Turkey.

But by running for president, Joe will only show people what an idiot he is, and make the Democratic candidates look bad to the undecided voter.

According to Biden people who are unbalanced should have their guns confiscated and anyone who owns a "scary" rifle is mentally unbalanced.

I thought the video was great. I laughed because I was expecting some stupid "keep my babies safe from gun violence" and it turned out to be the opposite. (Unless you consider legislation against guns to be "gun violence" like I do :D)

I agree though, not the best video to show a bunch of hoplophobes.

I would agree it was a poor video to choose, and it could have been much worse.
As for Biden, I wouldn't spit on him if he was on fire.

The video was chosen to make gun owners look like fringer loonytunes. "Baby" is a loaded word that sparks fear and loathing. Biden's snide, dismissive, insulting response reflects the way the Left really sees gun owners and how it would treat them if it truly had absolute power: as dangerous sickos who need "observation" and maybe incarceration. Take what you saw the other night very seriously as an epiphanal and clarifying moment about what's going on right under the surface.

This does give us perfect ammunition to tear the left a new one on gun control though.

Yeah, the guy from MI should have presented himself better. I think he should have dressed a little nicer, used better language, but you know what else? He was featured with a snowman complaining about global warming.

I consider myself very worldly on many issues (especially Classical Music, the field I'm getting my PhD in). I consider myself blessed that I have the opportunity to pursue and have pursed education at some of the top schools in the US and Canada. Yes, I do cringe when we get someone a little less "formal" than I'd like representing out rights. You know what though. He may not have the education, he may be a little strange, but he does deserve to be treated with dignity and as a human being.

There's such thing as constructive criticism (the liberals invented the term I think). And for Biden to be such a jerk to that guy, is unacceptable in my book. Jered may not be the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree, but he's still a man for God's sake. Treat him like one. Biden treated Jered like he was beneath him. I think that speaks volumes to how Biden feels about gun owners in general.

Do we see a trend? Are the liberal politicians and the media collaborating to make attributions toward gun owners…attributions that the gun owners are mentally unstable simply due to their interest in firearms, and especially so if they are collectors?

It seems that beyond the default attribution as being nuts due to their interest in firearms, the antis further extend this new "mental clause" to include that the gun owner is seriously unstable if he or she would want more than 1 firearm per month.

God forbid that the purchaser would be restless/anxious to get their firearm. Be careful…the antis seem hell-bent to socially enforce waiting periods, even in states without the "cooling down period". Anyone who would call to verify if their firearms had arrived will soon to be viewed as a nut-case. Ergo, we come full-circle…are we to understand that we had better exhibit a disinterest in firearms or be demeaned as a nutcase?

Before you know it, we will see politicians publicly and without legal basis criticizing and attacking firearms owners as being mentally unfit to own firearms, simply because they question how the politicians will defend their 2nd amendment rights. Lordy, I dread the day that should ever come to be.

"He is a terrible representative of the people of Delaware, I'm 45 now and I have voted against him every 6 years since my 18th birthday. Biden along with Kennedy are the poster children for term limits and what is wrong with our government"

I'll take your word for it.

Did anyone read the article above and want to respond to it, or are we just going to reply with a few sentences about how the YouTube guy did a disservice to gun owners.

Hint: the article implies that it shouldn't have harmed gun owners anyway.
