Has anyone come up with a common definition for the phrase "Fudd"? I have seen several posts where hunters have asked if they are a "Fudd" and seen people answer with examples or replies to the information contained in the original post, but not an exact definition. This has left me wondering if I truly understand the word myself.
Below is the definition that I use, do I have it right?

An anti gun hypocrite that owns firearms for "sporting purposes" willing and even eager to condemn other gun owners and dismiss their right to own "evil" or " ugly" guns; usually with a sneer, upturned nose, and derisive comment such as "redneck" "hillbilly" or "punk"

Elmer Fudd used a blunderbuss shotgun to shoot at that "wascally wabbit".

All I know.

My definition is simple - A Fudd is someone, normally a hunter, who supports the right to own guns that they think are legitimate, normally for hunting, and is willing to sell out all other weapons to save theirs.

They are elitists who normally favors wooden stocks and bolt actions but have no qualms about plopping the latest optics on their "real" firearm. They are the first people to kiss the bootheel of the occupying forces to save their own neck and enjoy spreading their inner misery on the rest of the world.

Those are Fudds to me

I thought that the statement below summed it up nicely...

Fudds are probably the most insidious group of gun owners out there, they think that "I don't need it so no one else does either". They are willing to sell out the rest of us in hopes they can maintain their elitist self image as "great white hunters" and "sportsmen". The bulk of them I do not even think of as hunters, most are trophy killers who could not find a tree without a guide.

Fudds are traitors of the highest order. They will sell you down the river just to try and save their own hides. IF there ever comes a time when we need to stand together, the will stand behind us and shoot us in the back. Fudds benefit from the blood spilled to protect their freedom, but in their arrogance they claim it to be solely as their own and would sacrifice nothing of their own to preserve it.

I say that we should use the term liberally and often, and let people prove that they are not "Fudds". They do not have to own EBR's. I know EBR's are not up everyone's alley. They just can't be against people having them.

I am tired of being held up to the wolves as a sacrifice.

I don't know that you're going to be able to get an agreed upon definition of a Fudd because of the range of positions representable.

As a minimum, a "Fudd" is a hunter who doesn't care what happens to guns they do not use for their hunting activities. They don't care if other guns are restricted, left alone or outright banned by politicians because they have no interest in them.

As a worst case, a "Fudd" is a hunter that is actually an "anti" and actively believes that any firearm with a modern military weapon lineage or that is not their type of hunting arm has no place in anyones hands outside of the military or law enforcement.

The worst case Fudd has no problem throwing his brothers to the wolves to save his own sorry hide.

A story from a Lutheran Minister in Pre WW II Germany starts "When they came for the Trade Unionists, I stood by.... the Catholics, I stood by, when they came for me, their was no one left to stand with me.

I saw this in WI in 1986. Bear dog hunters wanted no bow hunters. Bow hunters wanted no dog hunters.

Both got their wish, sort of. No bear hunting 'til it went through the Courts.

hehe...Kill de Wabbit! Kill de Wabbit!

Fudd isn't talking about hunters. Its talking about an attitude.

I've been a hunter for 25 years and my first deer was with an HK91. I use my EBRs hunting and I also use my bolt actions.

A fudd is one that doesn't respect your right to use the rifle of your choice hunting because of his own particular tastes and choices.

I know a lot of folks that would NEVER use a EBR hunting that are NOT fudds. They kid me about my EBRs sometimes, but would NEVER say I am less qualified or appropriate to be in the woods. These guys are NOT fudds. They just have their own tastes in what they spend THEIR money on.

Then there are those that call for banning legislation on other persons choices because they are not one that THEY would make. These people involve themselves in things that quite frankly ARE NONE OF THEIR BUSINESS and DOES NOT AFFECT them-- or shouldn't.

Its when people start calling for restrictions on others based on arbitrary matters that one becomes a "Fudd."

I know I am in the minority here, but the term "Fudd" needs to be dropped. Granted, the anger at Zumbo is justified, but further argument and alienization of other firearms owners just does what the Antis are trying to do to us. Divide and conquer.
Please. Drop. The. Term. Now.

Thank you

I don't like the term at all. We should be concentrating on unifying ALL gun owners.

I understand that "Fudd" is supposed to mean hunting-only gun owners who are against other gun owners, like Zumbo. I get it.

What I am worried about is how it sounds to other people. It sounds like you are talking about all hunters. Elmer Fudd, anyone? Anyway, I feel that this term will do nothing more than serve to drive a deeper wedge between RKBA types and hunters.

I don't disagree with the upper two comments.

We really do need to be cohesive, and seek not to divide our ranks.

But I'll ALSO have to point out that those like Zumbo fired the shot over our bow. He called for a seperation from us. I've never heard a single EBR supporter calling for a divorce from any other segment of our group.

I've been through a real divorce, so I'll use a nice analogy:

Reading that Zumbo article felt a lot like I did when my ex-wife served me with papers. It was practically due-process for me.

Now, even on a divorce based on irreconcilable differences can go either amiably or brutally. My divorce started out amiable until I ended up paying for her a new BMW and alimony. Ask me how I feel about that now.

Some never have an amiable period--like when you come home and find your wife in bed with your best friend and three sailors. That is kinda how a lot of EBRer's feel about the "Fudds." By being willing to divorce from us, we feel like we just found them in bed with Sarah Brady.

So I can understand why there is an animosity towards a fudd "ATTITUDE."

While we need to be cohesive, I don't see how it is possible if someone expressively states that he doesn't respect my rights.

Its like being best friends with the guy that is sleeping with your wife.

I am shooter and collector first, hunter second. Amongst hunters you will find many who "hate military rifles" and advocate banning them (meaning EBR's). These folks cannot be easily be converted by taking them to the range and letting them shoot your FAL, they have already probably had the chance and now turn their noses up at EBR owners. Simply put these people are showing that they are more than willing to sell us out. We pose no threat to them yet they take the initiative to threaten us.

I won't carry an EBR hunting.

Why? I'm more comfortable hunting with a 'traditional' rifle or shotgun. That's the way I feel about it. I've got an SKS that I just love to shoot, but plinking and range work are all it ever does for me. I had a VEPR for a while. It was a blast to shoot, but I wouldn't have hunted with that either.

I also feel it's none of my business what YOU hunt with. If you want to carry an SKS, that's great. If you want to carry an AR (and I KNOW that there are AR's capable of better accuracy than traditional rifles) that's good too.

I support your right to own, shoot, and carry anything you want. I also belong to and support the NRA and TSRA (Texas State Rifle Association).

But because I am a hunter and prefer a 'traditional' long gun, many would call me a 'Fudd'. Please don't pidgeonhole me and others who feel as I do (and there are millions of us).

Just because a gunwriter\hunter makes a dumb statement, please don't assume all hunters feel that way.

ezy,

The entire message of your post is EXACTLY why you are not what is commonly called a "Fudd."

I seriously doubt that anyone will cause the "Fudd" term to go away, however. But it is important to understand that those using it aren't using it to define any traditional sporter user, or any hunter, or any non-EBR owner. They are using it to describe those that hold an attitude that indicates a desire to impose THIER views on eveyone else.

I love using a bolt action hunting-- probably more than I do my EBRs. But I use them both. My dad has NEVER fired an EBR and would never own one personally. He is about as traditional a sportsman as they come-- and still, he's not a "Fudd."

Since we can't expect the term to die, I'd just ask all the traditional sporter uses to PLEASE realize that when they see the term "Fudd," it isn't referring to you if you aren't in the "ban'em" camp.

If anything we EBR owners are HONORED and PROUD to be associated with, friends with, and in the company of those traditional sporter users that support all of our rights. It often takes strong character to put yourself in another's shoes and stand for the rights of those that doesn't immediately seem to be yours as well. Those who see this, regardless of your firearm choices, are VALUABLE and CHERISHED friends.

Fudd is about attitude

It doesn't matter what you hunt with, or if you hunt. Technically, I was probably a Fudd until about 18 months ago. Who needs those semi-automatic AK-47s and M-16s? Why would you ever need that 33 round clip for your Glock? Since then, I've realized that I was being exceptionally closed minded, and had been painfully misinformed.

Rights are not about *need*. We don't *need* a free press, or freedom to practice any religion, or freedom of speech. We don't *need* an EBR. Being rights, demonstrating a need is unnecessary.

Now, I think we need to have a come to Jesus meeting with the Fudds out there. They need to understand that according to the Supreme Court, EBRs are protected, while hunting is not. We are all in this boat together.

Make friends with an anti or a fudd today. We are not lunatic Rambo impostors, we are dedicated to protecting all the rights afforded by the Constitution. Not just for us, but for everybody.

From United States v. Miller, 307 U.S. 174 (1939):

"The Court cannot take judicial notice that a shotgun having a barrel less than 18 inches long has today any reasonable relation to the preservation or efficiency of a well regulated militia, and therefore cannot say that the Second Amendment guarantees to the citizen the right to keep and bear such a weapon."

Recovering Fudd

Hello My Name is George and I am a recovering Fudd. For the first forty years of my life and the first 32 years as a gun owner/hunter I was a Fudd. I didn't believe that people needed fully automatic weapons, didn't need assualt rifles and if the banning of certain models helped society and the police in dealing with criminals than fine, no sweat off my nose.

Over the past 15 years as I read more, studied the constitution, read the various state constitutions, and studied the reality of the impact of gun control on crime and the american way of life. I have moved away from Fuddeness and embraced the concept that if you are a law abiding citizen, or legal resident of this country, than I don't care what rifle or handgun you have or where/how you carry it. I may not buy it, think you are crazy for wasting your money on it, or be jealous that I don't have one too, but I don't care.

I doubt that I will ever be a fully recovered Fudd, I have to continually fight the urge to ridicule someone's gun ( Why does anyone need a 500 Alaskan?), but then I remind myself about my past beliefs. So, has long as you conduct yourself as a law abiding contributor to society, a gentleperson and a sportsman have at it.

Peace
George_Co

Has anyone come up with a common definition for the phrase "Fudd"?

The simplist I can describe it is this:

A Fudd is someone who does not understand that the Second Ammendment has very, very little to do with hunting; and EVERYTHING to do with Freedom.
