The Unforgiven

Unforgiven

I though Unforgiven was a wonderful movie and Deadwood, which I caught the other night in the hotel while on travel, nearly unwatchable.

Perhaps this is just a more recent version of the John Wayne Westerns vs Clint Eastwood Westerns debate.

Unforgiven is one of the best movies ever made, and its dialog is masterful, the delivery perfect, and the actors exemplary.
I totally agree. I've been an Eastwood fan since the days of Rowdy Yates. I've got UNFORGIVEN on VHS, and I've watched it probably 8 or 9 times. I never get tired of it, I think it's a fabulous movie. The way they accept and carry through on their killing of the cowboy...Morgan Freeman gets cold feet, and Clint has to finish the job, but with obvious distaste. He shoots him, then reprimands the cowboy's friends for not giving him a drink of water, like he's just done a job that was incredibly distasteful, and tells them he's not going to shoot them if they come out of cover...almost like a kid's game.

The Schofield Kid talks a big game, then immediately loses his juice when he sees what it's like to REALLY kill a man.

Clint seemed almost meek for most of the movie, but when his friend Morgan Freeman gets sadistically tortured and killed, all of his old, evil, conscienceless ways come bubbling back to the surface, and he kills without regret.

Lots of things going on in this movie, it's my favorite western of all time.

I really don't care much for westerns--but Unforgiven is one of two or three that I really think are very well done. I've seen it several times and it never fails to entertain me.

Along with Shane and High Noon, I think Unforgiven is one of the best westerns ever made.

And I always wondered about Clint's pistol, too...

Hands down, Unforgiven is the best "Clint" western.
Never paid much attention to his handgun though, I was too busy drooling over the Scofield.

I thought Unforgiven was unforgettable too. If you expected Eastwood the Invincible as in most of his previous Westerns, there may be a temporary period of disillusionment. Kinda like being 13 again and first learning that Dad was a mere mortal after all. But the imperfections and struggle against the dark side really touched a nerve and made for more enduring enjoyment for me.

I agree about Deadwood. I watched it a couple of weeks ago, and it was one of the most boring programs I've ever seen.

Ian McShane was on The Tonight Show recently and spoke about the frustrating task of redubbing Deadwood in order to get it ready for syndication to broadcast TV.

I think it will be very interesting to see how the emotional context and general "vibe" will be butchered to appease the censors.

It seems that they are being forced to speak nonsense in an attempt to get the dialogue to match the video.

I can't believe they're going to try to shoehorn that show onto regular TV. I can't even imagine how that could work.

Last nights episode was awful, by the way. They had someone else write it and wow was it not good. It was like a parody of itself.
