THE Unofficial Countdown to AWB II Thread...

Personally, I don’t think so. As others have pointed out, there are simply too many pro-gun senators, both Dem and Rep, for the bill to ever get past the house.

This is one of the many times I hope I'm wrong and you and the optimists are correct. I would love to choke down a big ol' bowl of crow. I could really work up an appetite for that particular dish on this subject.

I bet a nice Guinness Stout would go lovely with that meal.

Please God let you be right.

If I might… the reason you are seeing so much negativity right now it precisely because no one knows what is gonna happen. I admit it’s sort of a wasted effort in the long run, but in the short run its really the only thing keeping some of us upright.

Speaking as a real Conservative Republican, many of us are just pi**ed. All that effort for 20+ years (some of us a little less) shot to hell. We have to start all over again and we feel (at least I do) that we’ve earned the right to whinge about this for a while. We can’t do anything else until the next congress starts meeting.

Right now the bullets are not flying and we have no leader. Once the battle starts up again it might be better and our outlook may perk up. If we get a REAL leader it will also help. But for now (at least the next week or so) we are gonna kick the puppies, make babies cry, and be generally disagreeable.

So I guess put me in the “We’re Screwed” category until further notice.

Put bama in the "dems pass AWB II" list.

They will try, they will pass a bill, bush will sign.

I don't know what the bill will have in it, but a BIG part of me wants the bill to be a scorched earth type bill. I actually hope the thing has all sorts of hidden details that cause major confrontations. I think that sort of thing would get the citizenry all "up in arms" pun intended. Purhaps we need a good kick in the teeth to wake some people up.

I say we call the Dem's bluff.

In 1994 they said noone really needed the right to bear arms because we'd never live under tyranny. Fast forward to 2004, they bitch that Bush is a tyrant. Well... guess we needed the guns. That would be reason alone for AWs according to the Dems own words.

I don't think you can start your count down until January. That's when the Dems actually take office.
Right now all they can do in posture about what they are GOING to do once January comes.

But put me down that AWB 2 is coming soon once they do take office.

Yes, AWB coming.

But I have stocked up on lots of guns and ammo. I assume the rest of you have done the same?

Why would any Republican care?

If anyone has the gun vote, they do, and they know it. Now isn't exactly a good time to abandon a substantial voting block. In fact, it would be a good time to do something to reinforce their support.

Except the Republicans have been abandoning their base consistently for the last six years. Why would they stop now? It cost them the Congress Tuesday, and they still don't care. Bush continues sound and act like a liberal. He's got liberals in both houses of Congress who will send him liberal legislation which he will sign.

You make a great point, but I doubt the Republicans are going to do anything about it.

all this speculation going on.They just gained power back do you think they are eager to loose it again, specially before the presidential election?

They could be stupid and do again to themselves what they did after 94 and loose again after angering voters, but they have other special interests besides antigunners to consider.

State levels where they may feel embolden maybe but I doubt they will touch the issue on a national level until they are sure power is set in stone for them in the congress and white house.

Oh there may be Feinstein or somebody try to promote a personal agenda on it but I think the Dem leadership if they have any sense at all will avoid it.The thirst for power is supreme to them and they know that anti gun legislation hurt them before and will again.

Well, despite 1994, they pushed more gun control in 1999 and Al Gore ran on a platform of licensing handguns and banning semi-autos in 2000 (he was the most pro-gun Dem in the primary too).

In 2004, they ran John Kerry - which pretty much speaks for itself. Kerry missed practically every vote in the Senate that year due to campaigning; but on Super Tuesday - the biggest Democratic primary election in the country - he dropped everything to fly back to DC and vote for banning centerfire rifle ammo and renewing the AWB.

I mean, I would certainly like to believe the Dems have seen the light and are changing their ways; but when I look at who is in charge of the committees and how often they have been willing to grab the hot stove in the past, I am just not that optimistic.

Well, it remains to be seen if the GOP will filibuster to raise the vote count needed to pass an AWB. The problem is that some may be sold on voting to restrict some military feature on a gun that no one "needs" ("reasonable restrictions") without seeing is as an attack on the Constitution. Obviously many in Congress remain impressionable on the subject of gun control, so pro-gun lobbyists earn their money.

The ones with the personal agendas ARE the leadership.

Does anyone think that revenge isn't the motive for a lot of their actions? They have already called for investigations into everything that has ticked them off for 12 years. With all the calls for moderation and bipartisanship, they still plan on taking revenge on every injustice they or their constituents have suffered, including high gas prices that have already been investigated and found not to result from profiteering.

If they are doing all that in revenge, don't you think they might, just might want revenge for losing their "rightful" place as a majority? Think they might push through gun control that doesn't expire, in anticipations of eliminating it as a threat to them down the road?

Bart and Buzz,I hope this will not be the case.If they are willing to push their agenda even if they know it will hurt them afterward then yes this would be something to worry about then.

Dunno

Like I posted on another board, if even such a Democratic luminary like Dirty Little Billy Kilinton can say gun control is an election losing issue, can the Democrats be that stupid?

After being out of power for 12 years (6 on the Presidential side) and the only margin of victory in the House being Red State Dems, I think they might avoid this as long as possible.

Unless they want the Republican Red State riled up

We seem to make a lot of assumptions about how organized the Democrats really are, Republicans too for that matter. I believe the fact is that Democrats in Congress are a bunch of loose cannons. Pelosi has already alluded to that, acknowledging that she will "do her best" to contain radicals (like Conyers), who have the power to do pretty much what they want to. I believe we will see the Dems own brand of disunity, some of it detrimental to their grander ambitions. If all doesn't seem pretty mild for the next two years, 2008 could be a rebound year for the Republicans, who needed to be careful what they wished for. Quality of candidates will be critical to any such rebound. They seem to be in short supply right now, those who really seem like what one would expect from a Republican.

The Dems have demonstrated far greater cohesiveness than the Reps have shown. Look at the vote counts for some of the more politically charged votes. Even many of the conservative Dems voted the party lines, contrary to a lot of primary votes.

As for Pelosi's comments, one of the oldest tricks is to publicly try to control subordinates and admonish them to toe the line, while using them as "loose cannons" who can advocate extremist positions, and allow the leader to play the role of peacemaker, achieving a compromise. Said compromise, of course, becomes the next step towards the ultimate goal.

This is how the game is played in business and in politics. I know we tend to forget that because the Reps have been screwing around for years, and don't play serious politics, as demonstrated by the fact that the Reps didn't conduct investigations upon taking power but that is the Dems' declared first order of business.

Does that mean they will start going door to door to get our mags and guns?

If they do they might as well bring in large calvery and arrest me.

gun? what gun?

I doubt anyone will go door to door collecting guns, really. If they come to my house, I'll tell them I don't own a gun. If they have records showing that I do, in fact, own a gun, I'll tell them I lost it out in the woods. If they have records showing that I own lots of guns, I'll tell them that I lost ALL of them, out in the woods.

If they ask, what's that thing hanging above the fireplace mantel, with a barrel and a trigger, I will tell them that it is a sculpture, of a gun.

I just put two WASRs on 90 day layaway. That lets me concentrate my immediate cash for the next couple/three months on buying AR lowers and normal-capacity magazines for all my semiauto rifles and pistols, and still have a couple of AKs waiting for me early next year when the evil eye of Madam Speaker swings its black gaze upon those who would dare to own semiautomatic weapons...

<sigh>

Even many of the conservative Dems voted the party lines, contrary to a lot of primary votes.

The party has some work to do before "conservative Dems" is viewed as anything but an oxymoron.

My predictions:

Tons of panic buying of ammunition and magazines between now and 08 making dealers happy and driving prices sky high.

Inexpensive ammo shortages.

Doom and gloom on the gunboards.

Past that, I have no idea.

I have a feeling that they will try very hard. I hope we have what it takes to stop them beforehand, because I don't see a reaction to a new AWB on our part being any diffrent than back in 94.

I think we need to look no further than how close we actually came to getting an AWBII in 2004. Now put the dems in control of both houses and its a forgone conclusion that we'll see it.

Lets not forget the THR members that helped to vote in the dems in 06! You know who you are, and you were very open about it on the boards leading up to the election. We have a couple hard years to come, so THANKS.
