They're opening a Gander Mountain near me. Good, bad?

Does anyone know if they strictly buy products that are Made in China like wal-mart???

If they only sold American made stuff, I might actually pay the higher prices...

Yes - Gander Mountain has a policy of ONLY buying things from China.

Of course, I am kidding.

I agree that I would frequent a USA-only store. But they just plain old do not exist. Start one up within 100 miles of me and I will be there.

How awful. Stores like that attract people interested in guns, decent folk move out of the neighborhood, and property values decline.

They also induce overly agressive behavior, male pattern baldness, and a tendency to shout "Woo woo" at embarrassing moments.

I am looking at the Midway USA Master Catalog.

I am guessing that not all the the Simmons, Sworovski, Nikon, Minox, Kowa, Leopold Golden Ring, MeOpta, Konus, Bushnell, Barska, Burris, BSA, Brunton, Zeiss, Weaver, Swift, Tasco, Vortex, Steiner, Pentax, Leica, etc. optics are made in the U.S.A. Also, jumping to the shooting gloves, ear protection, eye protection, etc. sections, I can't believe that all the manufacturers represented are made in the USA.

Midway USA is also just selling what sells.

At least we're now noticing.

Heck - a friend of mine got a silver medal at Camp Perry. It said "Made in China" on the back.

Who wants to get into the shooting medal business? I'll help you sell to the folks at Camp Perry.

"Guns...lots of guns" Matrix level.

But expensive. They're Wolf 7.62x39 went from $4.50 to $6.99 in a week.

One caveat, you *can* talk them down on used firearms. Did that with a Mossberg 500 I bought last year.

Go check out the closest USA Flag you have...Odds are it is made in China we well...Go figure.

Actually, the only flags I've bought were from WalMart and all were made in USA.

I can speak of the Gander Mt in York, PA:

- generally overpriced :barf:

- more of a hunter's mecca than anything else

- a lot of the rifles are on a rack open for anyone to handle and its very obvious. There was an M1A SOCOM (grossly overpriced by the way) that looked like it had been pawed up by every Bubba Gump who came through and his 12 year old son with sticky hands, a real shame. :barf:

I do remember them having a sidewalk sale where they were purging extra inventory, so they might have deals on camping stuff every now and then. But as far as buying guns, they aren't the first place on my list.

I'll agree that there prices aren't good unless there's a sale on. However the local one is way better than most of the local gun stores when it comes to service. It's always worth a quick run through if you're looking for something but they're not my top pick.

You have to watch them closely. They will raise an items price to way over retail if they think they can get away with it. I have found them doing this with Karma and Kistler rods along with Optima batteries. The store in Lake Mary, Florida is laying off staff already.

Indifferent should be added to Good and Bad.

It's not that good, can't possibly be bad unless you let them steal your money.

Gander Stuff

There is a couple of bright sides catch them having sales or if one store is having problems moving a particlar firearm after awhile they will ship that firearm to a different store. When they do this its then marked by them as a used weapon, and thats where you find the deals. I bought two shotguns not quite a year apart like that. The first one was a Browning XS Sporting .410 in the box with the choke tubes, and the triggers, brand new gun no handling marks but they marked it as used since it came from another store $1400.00. The next one was a Browning 525 Sporting, ported barrels, extended choke tubes (5), 3 triggers, new in the box, no handling marks, .20Ga grade III/IV $1250.00. Both these were bought at the Fredricksburg Va store about 2 years ago.

So i pull in and check the islands (where the used guns are) then if I don't find any gems I look at the new area and fondle and look at all of them, I spend more time in the shotgun area I suppose.

Ammo is insane alright. $27 for a brick of .22's when most places were charging $12 for the same brand.

Does anyone know if they strictly buy products that are Made in China like wal-mart???

Strictly? No. But I'll bet a huge percentage of the stuff outside of the gun dept. is "Hecho en China".

Corporations taking welfare isn't capitalistic... it's opportunistic.

But that is good news.

The one by me is usually overpriced, but it's worth stopping by now and then to see what, (if anything), is on sale.
Got a real good price on a Charles Daly Hi Power last week.
Like anything else, know what you're buying.
Can't see that one opening up near by would be a "bad" thing.

Overpriced... They will drive out local stores...yammer freakin yammer! Go and look for yourself. You'll see stuff you like and some you don't. Read some of the other posts.... Dicks sporting goods is comming to town; will I like it? Ok, look; nobody here likes Dick's, Gander Mountain, Big Bass, Mini-Bass, or even EveryoneonEarthbuysOurstuff.com. Your Mom squirted you out with your own brain. Use it. Nobody here likes anything. They don't agree on 45acp vs .17Rem; all glocks kaboom and all 1911's need 2000 break-in rounds before they rust into oblivion. Nothing is as good as a Smith 626 except every pistol that came before or after it.
You hafta engage your own brain. If you have no idea whatsoever, take a guess, and you'll be no worse off. You'll learn by experience, just like the rest of us. We'll all steer you right and be just as wrong as everyone before us.

Most of the stuff I have seen in my local Gander Mtn has been to expensive. However you can find a good deal there occasionally. It's worth browsing for the deals every once in a while.

On selected guns they have great sales. At ours an AMAZING number of people are always purchasing firearms. This in spite of what many consider retail or retail plus prices. I have purchased only one there and have been extremely satisfied. It's not perfect, but what's not to like? Enjoy!

theres one in jacksonville and st agustine and they are not bad but the prices are a little high are you refering to the one they are building in ocala?

It's a neat place. I only buy out of season, so I never pay full retail.
I have one right up the road, and a Bass Pro a few miles away.
I don't care for either one, but I'm not a camo wearing "hey look at me, I deer hunt" kind of guy.
The guns are pretty nice. The used gun sales are ofter pretty good. The selection is wide. They even stock those new Springer SoCom rifles.

For serious backpacking gear, and hardcore outdoors products, they're not the place.
But, for the casual hiker, nature walker, camper, they have a good selection.

So, for my hobbies: hunting, camping, backpacking, archery, and shooting, they're stocked up. kinda.

People are pretty nice too.

Lots of made in China stuff.

I got a $50 gift card and joke with my wife about needing to get more money to go there. The gift card should get me through the door!:neener:
As many stores as they have, one would think that they could provide better deals on firearms and accessories. I find it's cheaper for me to buy guns and accessories from small gun shops around where I live and on-line.

Gander

I've purchased most of my reloading equipment and supplies from gander mountain in the past. Remember when they had a mail order side of the business? But here lately their prices on reloading supplies and ammo have been just plain stupid, twice the price that I can buy it for online or even locally in some cases. Their cost for CCI mini mags was almost twice the price that I could buy it for 10 minutes down the road---Farm & Fleet of all places.
I look at the total cost when purchasing, shipping, taxes and hazmat fees. I can do better by letting my fingers do the walking. I don't mind paying a premium for the convenience of having the items locally but not at twice the price. With a little planning on my part a couple of days wait is worth it for half of the cost. I keep a pretty close eye on prices online, know the market prices and buy when a deal is to be had. I know unit costs and gander can be blown out of the water without much effort anymore.

I'm not talking about China made versus US made, CCI, Hornady, Federal and RCBS are not made in China at least to my knowledge.

Just my opinion.
Pat

There is a rather new Gander Mountain on the east side of Orlando.
My first trip left thinking it was a Wal-Mart want-ta-be.
Prices seemed high, stock... not the best selection wise. One plus is you can handle the rifles/shotguns.
Over-all experience.....dis-appointed.
