Thinking about a 17HMR, just for grins!

Just wanting something new to play with at the range and looking at a Savage 17HMR 93R … it’s got their accu-trigger, heavy barrel, threaded muzzle and a Boyd’s stock. Also comes with what I imagine is an inexpensive 3-9x40 …

Anyone wit experiences with the rifle or the cartridge?

NEA Sportster with a Leupold 3.5x12. Hundreds of ground squirrels over the last few years. I'm in a rural area but there are other houses around. The 17 grain bullet disintegrates whether I hit the varmint or not. Never heard a ricochet. Very accurate.

I just bought a used 93 in 17 hmr. I’m taking it to get the barrel threaded tomorrow. Got some groundhogs that need to go. Haven’t shot it yet, but looking forward to it.

Edit to add: mine does not have the AccuTrigger, which puts it pre 2012 from what I’ve read.

They uncommonly accurate and flat shooting. Bought one back in `07 and killed all sorts of stuff with it. Possums, coons, feral cats, etc.. Even crows out to 250yds.

What I want to know if it sounds good with a suppressor? Cause my CZ 457 22lr with a suppressor is basically like shooting a decent pellet rifle.
It runs 2500fps. It ain't gonna sound anything like a pellet rifle. It will sound like an unsuppressed .22LR.

2500 fps? Holy cow! I thought that was 17 wsm territory.

I have read reports of people seeing velocities over 2600 fps. Don't know how accurate their chronographs were and it was also on the internet. :)

I know nothing about the Savage 17 rifle except I used to see a lot of complaints about it on RFC but seldom see it even mentioned now. It's a personal quirk but I detest rifle triggers with center blades in them. I have owned three and every one of them had a problem.

I will say that the 17 HMR is devastating on small critters. I don't consider it a good hunting round because of this. Maybe if you can find shooting positions that allow you to make dependable head shots it would work well.

Yes the 17HMR and 17m2 are head shot only on small game if you plan on eating what you shoot. Both will destroy a squirrel if hit in the body. I have used the 17m2 for ground hogs and usually have an entry wound but no exit wound.

I have an older Savage MkII GVL without the Accu-Trigger in 17m2. It is almost boring to shoot at 100 yard and under on a calm day. Now if the wind is blowing too much then the 17m2 stays at home.

I still debate about getting a 17HRM and if I do it will be a Savage 93 with their heavier Varmint barrel. I have stuck with Savage rifles since all of them shoot well for me and they are easier to find in stock in left handed versions.

I picked up the Savage 93R 17HMR last week and a box of CCI Varmint and got to the range a couple days later .. the one mistake I made was taking my German Shepherd/Husky mix pup with me, she was a bit of a distraction, she kept leaving to go to the club house. She did okay when I took her out shooting my Ruger RPR 22LR subsonic with a suppressor. Unfortunately, even suppressed the 17 HMR turns out was too loud for her. She’s 11 months old and had problems with thunder but we finally got that fear under control.

Anyway, I shot targets at 25y, 50y &100y.
25 &100 were okay but I want to shoot them again without her distraction.

Here’s the good stuff…

Nice. I took my savage 93 out last week too. It’s also 17 hmr. I also ran it suppressed with the same ammo as you did. My groups were the same as yours. Only thing I didn’t have was the dog and the magazine. Since I had dropped off the gun a week before to get the barrel threaded I took the mag out and I left it sitting home on the counter!! Single feeding that tiny round wasn’t easy!!

I have had one for a few years, a 17 HMR barrel for my CZ 455 that is. Someday I’ll put it on. Probably would have already if I didn’t own a .22 Hornet.

Pretty pup. I had a long haired male with the same coloring. He got big but liked to cuddle. i would sit down on the back porch when I got home from work, he would sit down beside me, and I would pet him. In just a little bit I would have 90 or so pounds of dog in my lap nuzzling around on me and he was hard to remove. The easiest way was to just stand up and dump him. Weather never seeed to bother him. He was fine in our scorching summer heat and I saw him sleep on the lawn when it was snowing and be completely covered up.

Leave the pooch at home next time and see what the 17 hmr is really capable of. I bet you are going to like it.

I'd had a couple .17 HMRs and both have been accurate, especially the Anschutz 1717 shown here. Widespread reports indicate .17HMRs are surprising accurate across the brand spectrum. Which is largely due to the exceptional quality of the ammo available when the .17HMR was introduced and sense. I understand the Anachutz 1717 is no longer made but available on used gun markets but I hear they are now pricer than when new if you can find one. So if I were buying I'd look at other models, which is my best recommendation for someone in the market. IMG-4956.jpg IMG-4959.jpg IMG-4962.jpg
