I agree, CZ's are tops in the off the rack, mass produced, low priced sporters. But they are not top tier target rifles or Anschutz or Sako's. Also I think the Ruger American and Tikka rimfire may give them a run for the money in thier class. No one else here seems to know about Remington 540XR rifles. They were a step down from the 40x.

lol well this guy who won many matches with those two marlin model 70pss take down 22's he said everyone laughed when they saw him pull these out to compete in the matches but they didn't laugh much after it was over as he had won! so that's why I bought a pair of these and while it doesn't look like much don't let them fool you they are very good shooters!!

Exactly what kind of matches did this guy win? Did you witness any of these wins?

My thought exactly.
I shoot a lot of rimfire matches with everything from full blown target bolt action to sporters to timed semi auto and vintage. Just don't see a Marlin 70 takedown winning any of them.
May be I just shoot with better shooters.

An additional major plus for the CZs is that they have a feel in hand and in operation that is unlike most other guns these days, more old-school feeling. I love the way a broken-in 452 feels. Cycling the action is just about as enjoyable as the small groups that they shoot. If you are the type that appreciates this sort of thing, and quality wood and blued steel, you should try one. The chances that you won't love it are very slim, as are the chances that you won't be looking to buy a second one or a third one. :)

I shoot matches that the lot number of ammo you're using can make the difference.
In NRA Rimfire Silhouette how repeatable your scope is can cost you a match.
In NRA Indoor 4 position a simple thing like not unbuttoning my pants in kneeling and picking up a belly pulse has cost me a position.

I don’t think it’s all that germane, in no real world match does a Papoose win the contest for accuracy. We all know it, and that is all the more that needs spoken on the matter.

As much as I appreciate the accuracy of my 25N, my 452 is very nearly its equal and even that I equate as a fluke. My old Mossberg 43 May wind up surpassing them both this summer once I really wring it out but again, I fully believe the OP’s dilemma would best be solved with little more than a ball point pen spring and a good set of stones.

The Mk II is a solid shooter unless his is an exception to the rule. Eliminating a nasty heavy trigger pull should help sort that out, combined with ammo testing. Still won’t likely win matches but it will definitely try hard to keep up in a sporter class.

Quite frankly, and no disrespect meant, no, I won’t be surprised because it won’t happen. The 70PSS has been on my want list for a number of years but not as a paper puncher; they simply make for a great little walking rifle for youngsters who can’t heft the 6+ lbs a scoped 10/22 weighs.

I pray you don’t show up at your local range, paycheck in hand, looking to hustle the guy shooting his 40X. I’ve gotten compliments on my shooting from guys with customs, but it was hardly the sort of groups that they would otherwise deem acceptable. Very different worlds with nothing much in common.

So again ...
What type of competitions were these.

I believe he could win a how many cans can you knock off a fence at 25yds in 10 seconds competition - maybe. I can do FIVE 6" steel plates at 25yds in 3.4 seconds with my 10/22 LVT

well I hope you and this guy i'm talking about never cross as he will outshoot you with his as he has the proof and has done it plus for some reason people are, like you are programmed that the more your gun costs the better it will always shoot but there's cheaper guns out there that will it's like this just because you pump a million dollars in a 22 rifle dosent mean it will 100% outdo all the cheaper guns lol there are hidden treasures out there!

We go down this road talking about bulk .22 ammo vs match ammo.

Back to the original OP's question.
For the $ look for an older Winchester or Remington target gun. Most still have alot of life left in them. Just talked to a guy today sighting in a Win 52B. Gun was shooting great. Even my Win 75's will give my CZ452 Varmint a run for it's money.

some of them old rifles had deep rifling compared to these newer guns and that's why they will shoot better than a lot of the modern newer rifles!
