...or at least thats what my friends tell me. Most if not all of the guys I know are .45 guys and thus Sig, HK and 1911 junkies. As a result Beretta happens to be a 4 letter word, and up until yesterday I was also one who loved to rib on buddies of mine who carried one of those "canoli" shooters.

Well, I went into the gunshop yesterday and they had a used brigadier on the shelf. Just for kicks I asked to see it. I was astonished how well it fit my hand. The trigger felt good, not John Moses Browning good, but good. It pointed nicely as well. That, the fact that they seem to be reliable, and a 5" barrel sounds like a nice range/carry/beater/nighstand gun.

So heres my problem. 92fs or brigadier? I really like the lines of the fs, but the grips on the brigadier are just peachy. Assuming I can switch grips, i guess my question really comes down to whether or not the extra bulk on the brigadier slide will matter at all.

Ive heard that the heftier slide increases muzzle flip? Thoughts from any beretta owners.

I have a set of 92Fs and think they are great guns. Easy to shoot, easy to
clean, and they are as accurate as I should ever need.

As for the Brigadier, sorry I have never shot one before.

It's a good duty weapon.

A little big for some folks hands, but very reliable and more accurate than many.

Ernest Langdon has done pretty well in competition with them too. like others in the military, I've seen thousands of rounds fired with very little trouble.

Don't forget the .22LR conversion kit too when you buy that Beretta.

My Dad and Soon to be Father in Law like my Vertec the most out of my handguns, but I kinda wish that I never bought it. The ergonomics on that grips are horrendous.

I'd go for the Brigadier. Inox if you can find it. The reason boils down to one thing. Sights. On the standard 92FS you can't change the front sight to suit you. Nightsights can be added, but you have to send the gun off to Trijicon, have them put a hole in the integral front sight, then place the tritium vial directly in the front sight. It's expensive, but it's the only way to do it that doesn't look like backwoods gunsmithing. The Brigadier has a dovetailed front, so it's a (relatively) simple matter to change the sights. Much less expensive too.

I have a 92FS Inox and I like it very well (aside from the aforementioned sight thing). It accurate, reliable, and easily the smoothest functioning gun I've ever had.

If the grip and trigger suit you--why not? The Berettas I've seen have exceptionally nice fit and finish.

Despite the opinion earlier in this thread denegrating the Beretta, I suspect the odds of getting a reliable used Beretta exceeds the odds of getting a reliable used Colt 1911.

Ooooohh...BURN! I love me my 1911's but I've got a Beretta 92 as well and it's all the 9mm I need. I'd recommend them to anybody. The same people who hate my Beretta usually hate my HK USP and I think they're both comfortable to grip.

Only thing I'd recommend is a Wolff trigger conversion kit...it might save you trouble eventually, and it's super-easy to install.

Oh yeah, mine was an Indiana State Police trade-in, it won't win an award in the beauty pageant but it still runs like a cheetah on crack.

I bought nib 92FS and nib 96 brig. I prefer the look on the 92FS.
as far as for recoil or muzzle flip, if you're not a sissy girlie man, you won't have problem with it.
both the 92 and 96 have been 100% out of the box. no need for break in, no need for stinkin work on extractor. :D or other feedramp polishing horsecrap. :neener:

for reliability, I would trust my life on any new out of the box Beretta 92/96 than any new or tweaked 1911.

Thanks for the replies so far guys. The sights arent really an issue for me. The ones on the 92 suit me just fine.

Will there be an significant increase in longevity with the bulked up slide? I dont shoot hot ammo or reload, just the regular stuff.

Anybody have comparison on slide cracking between these two?

Keep it coming.

Actually, I have 3 Colts spanning 15 years of 1911 production that have been troublefree. I tricked out one, but the only thing that "needed" to be done was new sights. The other 2 got new beavertail grip safeties and that's about it. 1911s are neat b/c you can change so much to suit your tasts. My Beretta 92 now has a 92G mainspring, a 92 Elite hammer, and wood grips, nothing else. Two of these mods were aesthetic, the other was for a slightly lighter triggerpull to suit me .

Stay away from the 9000 series berretas though. I had one the was completely destroyed but a simple case head failure in an ultramax round. Ive had several of these in my glock 17 and you just pop out the case and get back to shooting. The only salvageable part of my 9000 was the magazine. It split the frame right behind the trigger guard, took a chunk out of the barrel and slide at the extractor, blew all the internal parts out the bottom (i got a NASTY blood blister from the trigger but thats all thank god) and we never were able to find the rear sight. When i spoke to berretas customer service rep about this he said and i quote WORD FOR WORD
"Oh yeah weve had quite a few of those doing that of late." ( in realtion to massive failure) Just a bit of caution

I sincerely hope you've stopped using that stuff. I did years ago. Seems felt recoil varied quite a bit as I shot my way through the box. Scared me a bit. I have a 9000s and like it quite a bit. It's not a primary carry, but I wouldn't hesitate to carry it if my primary stuff goes offline for some reason. The fact that you experienced this same problem in another gun, would seem to indicate that the ammunition has serious problem. I'm kind of wondering why you continued to use it. One might be excusable and/or may be chaulked up to Glock's rather liberal throating. Any more than that is too many.

I have 2 92's and recommend them highly! As for the difference between the fs & the brig...replaceable front sight & a heavier slide.

i own a 92fs and they are great. This is just a rumor i heard from some gun shop groopies but the slide from the 92fs can fit on the brigadier frame if it can good luck. You might want to check out the new px4 that is a cool firearm and is only getting better with all the extras coming out for it.Plus it comes with night sights from factory here in new mexico they are going for 500.00.Not so bad for beretta

What? No XD guys yet?

Clearly you need to make an effort to associate with a better class of people. :neener:

If you like the gun, buy it. The 92 series from Beretta are great guns. If I had to do it all over again, I'd still buy the 92FS over the Brigadier. The ability to change the front sight is nice, but I prefer the looks of the 92FS. I actually prefer the sweeping lines of this Beretta to both of them:
