Currently shooting 9mm with Glock 19 and Glock 26. Considering getting a full size .45. Friend recommends a Kimber. I've been happy with my Glocks. The Kimber Custom II with the black sights doesn't seem right to me. Would need to go with the LAPD version with the night sights.

Suggestions?

Thanks,
Scott

Stick with the Glock line if they satisfy you. Not that I'm knocking 1911s, they're great guns in their own right, but since you are familiar with the Glock pistol, why change? Just my two cents.

1911s are a special breed and you need to understand them a little before deciding to own one. I recommend hanging out over at http://www.1911forum.com/forums a bit if you are considering one. I second the idea to go shoot one. Some people just do not shoot them well because they have been shooting Tupperware :D for so long. DA and SA are two completely different animals. I have had both and now I will only buy 1911s. I think if you give it a try, you'll do the same.

I have both Glocks and 1911s. Try the Glock .45 for fit - my take is that they are too blocky. Fine guns if they fit your hand.

Depends, what do you want it for? IWB concealed carry will be more comfortable with the Kimber, but the Glock is easier to maintain and the finish will hold up better in wet environments for the most part. Many things to consider, including fit.

Right now, I have my G19 and G26 for CCW. The .45 will be for fun as well as home defense. I realize the G19 and G26 can work for home defense too. So, the larger frame is not a concern for concealed carry.

Try a friends if you can. I can't swap form Glock to almost anything else cause of the grip angle. Almost all the guns use 110 degree angle or close to it, so natural point of aim for me with a glock is too high. I would think people used to glocks would have the same problem in reverse.

I owned a Glock 21, then a Springfield Armory 1911A1 "Loaded", and now again back to the Glock 21. I sold my first Glock because I thought it was too bulky/blocky. But when I went with the 1911, I couldn't shoot it well and the safety bothered me. I am glad to be back with the Glock and have found ways to carry it concealed. It has been the most accurate handgun for me and fits my hand like a glove.

I would go with what El Tejon mentioned. Go rent both and see what fits you the best and what you enjoy the most. That's the most important thing.

I agree, try both & shoot at least 100 rounds through each before you decide & get the one that works best for ya. (Hey, you still might end up w/ both anyway! :D )

I wouldn't buy any Kimber that has a II stamped on the slide. An older model would be more reliable. If you want to explore a 1911, look at a Springfield Loaded. The new models are very nice, and a little less money than a Kimber.

I have a Kimber, and it is a fine firearm, but they have issues. The new ones have a firing pin block built into the slide which can be troublesome on certain specimens. Kimber also has a lot of trouble with their slide lock levers. A little tweeking can fix it, but hey. I paid a thousand bucks for my CDP and it had three quality issues right out of the box.

you have quite a different choice.
kinda like "i want either a ford F250 or an infinity Q45"
decide for yourself what you want to do w/ the pistol then purchase accordingy.
one is no better than the other. just worlds of difference.
my only piece of advise is that if you do go w/ a 1911 platform, practice and get training from someone who is intimate w/ the system. the 1911 is not a novices pistol. i have seen my share of AD's w/ new 1911 owners.

What I did:

I had a G19, and wanted to move up to a .45. I went into the store to buy a G21, but came out with a 1911. I decided I should expand my experience beyond "just Glocks", and with my 9mm serving my defense needs, I could afford to lean more towards the "fun" side of buying a new gun of unfamiliar design.

It took a couple years to grow into it, but I'm carrying 1911s now. Maybe you should take the chance and give it a try.

They're both good. :)

FWIW, I've owned both.

But, even though I have very large hands I could never adjust to the bulky grip of the Glock. Sold it and have stayed with 1911's or SIG 220's to feed my 45 ACP habit. Good shooting:)
