thinking of jumping ship: LNL to 650???

FYI - biggest issue that I had with priming on the LNL is that they USED to use a priming rod that looked like a "T". Residue/dirt would get under that and hang up the press and other problems. A couple of years ago they switched to a solid rod which was a big improvement (they replaced mine for free). I now rarely have a problem related to the priming system.

hold on a second, they switched?!?! I had someone machine a special rod and housing to do just that for my press..one small and one large.wish i had known. thats odd though that they would not have switched mine, they sent me a new subplate about a year ago, due to priming issues..the lip on the priming rod housing was sticking up to far and causing hang ups. (aparently from over tightening it, though they didnt provide me with any torque specs) guess I am calling hornady tomorrow.

I think Hornady also added a slight bevel to the sled too. To give it some clearance for some debre without hanging things up. My LNL still has the original priming system, not the newer breakaway. Never had a problem with it. I took extra time to ensure it was aligned perfectly. It will feed as fast as you can run the lever, large or small. I have not adj mine in over a decade.

Apples and oranges boys and girls.tcj is talking about the primer punch assy. part #398505 and I think you are talking about the primer tub housing body part #398319A.
And Blue68f100 isn't it amazing how well the press will run when it is "perfectly" adjusted?

There is a lot to be said about a press being perfectly adjusted.

Even the often bad mouthed Lee Loadmaster can hang with the most expensive presses if setup right.

I think the differences show themselves when the owner doesn't want to "tune" the press they buy.

If you want the best chance of opening a box and have a press that runs, spend the extra money to get the best. If you like solving problems and/or tuning machines to get them to work better than they could from the factory any of the others are perfect.

no, we were indeed talking about the same part. i know exactly what tcj is talking about. my issue had nothing to do with the primer tube housing body...i guess they call the whole thing a single part #398505 and #398507 (small and large primer punch assemblys) which actually consist of 4 parts each. what happened with mine was the priming punch assembly was sitting too high in the subplate causing the priming slide to hang up. Hornadys diagnosis was i needed a new subplate and they sent one to me for free. it didnt fix that particular issue but a small shim i made to put underneith subplate between it and the punch assembly solved the problem. it didnt solve the problem of debris getting stuck under the "T" of the top part of the punch, which caused all kinds of pandamonium and breakages involving the cam wire, and that is when I had a member here (mach iv shooter)machine new punches that did not have the "T". as well as removing material in the punch housing so the punch could once again sit flush with the housing. It worked like a charm. i also took it upon myslelf to removed a bit of material from the underside of the front of my primer slides so they could stop at the correct place, even if a kernel or two of powder or debris found its way into the primer slide groove. Acording to blue68f100, Hornady has started doing the same. ironic. wasnt able to call them in time today but intend to do so tomorrow to have the official new and improved parts sent to me. those two things along with adding a lock washer to the shell plate bolt have solved almost all my problems.

Thanks for the better explanation, I may not be the brightest or the sharpest crayon in the box but I can usually get it if you hit me in the head enough. Usually, with a hammer, I do have a hard thick skull. Well, I'll be damned I learned something new. That must be rare that the punch sits too high never seen it, but I could visualize it if it is stripped. I will put this in my memory bank. Oh, by the way, I remove the bottom front of my slide too.

Powder debree gets under the lip on the primer punch anvil and the outer housing preventing it from going all the way down. There was no way for it to get out unless you took it apart. My original one finally had enough wear it was no longer staying centered, that is when Hornady sent me the updated part. It's sure is a great improvement over the original one.
