This is probably the dumbest Handgun purchase

What size black bears you got in Texas?

I hike big bend occasionally and have hunted and hiked SE New Mexico a lot. The bear are small, under 300, for the most part. But, blacks don't get a whole lot bigger, anywhere. 500 lbs is record territory. They aren't 1500 lb brownies like in Alaska and, frankly, they're not near the danger. I am just not that paranoid of bears. I don't like hauling around 6 lbs of handgun in high, rugged country, that's for sure. I didn't like it when I was in my 20s. At 59, my hikes are shorter, anyway. I've been thinkin' a new 4" SP101 would be a dandy hiking gun. I think that's why Ruger is introducing it. Down here, one fears the cartel drug runners, not the bears. Also, in national parks, one must conceal. An X frame as a concealed weapon? BWAAAAA, ha, ha, ha!

Darn. First thing I thought:
"Another Judge thread!":what:

I like em. Shorter barrels, using .500JRH ammo. All you could want in a CCW gun.

Ditto.

Cool video, it looks like it has some punch behind it. I need to try some gloves next time out. My hand just hurts after 6 or so rounds..

Thanks, it was a 60 round match. That's the most I have shot in one day. Usually when target shooting I start flinching after about 20-25 rounds. Keep practicing, you'll get there. :)

I have the 500 in 6.5" barrel as my alaskan bear defense. I feel good about it because the ballistics are close to that of a shotgun slug and with better penetration (better SD). But really, the reason why I got it over a long gun was that I can holster it on my chest and always have both arms free for doing what I went to wilderness for. If I had to sling a long gun around, I just wouldn't be having as much fun and wouldn't bring it. And, I figure the scenario that I need to shoot a bear is one that an attack has already begun and I won't need to aim more than 2 yds away.

I don't think the .460 Magnum is the dumbest handgun purchase ever. I say that because unlike the 500 Magnum that shoots only the 500 Magnum your .460 will also fire the .45 Schofield, .45 Colt, 454 Casull as well as the .460 S&W Magnum loads...

I shot a .460 only once and I was surprised at how tame the recoil was compared to what I thought it would be. The muzzle break does a good job.

Haven't found the right gloves for that pain, yet. But, somehow, I survive!

R-E-L-O-A-D!!!!
FOR EXAMPLE: 45 Colt runs anywhere from $30-$50/box
I can reload that same box for about $12 with expensive name brand Jacketed bullets.
(Hornady, Sierra, Speer, Nosler etc, etc)
For those who cast their own lead bullets, the cost can be as low as $5/box (50 rds)

I like your post on the 460's versitility, and the idea of shooting anything 45cal in the 460..you could even shoot the 45CowboySpecial in it.lol Could come in handy if you ever needed or wanted to shoot your gun and found yourself somewhere that specialty ammo like the 460 was harder to find.

But all that may sound good as a marketing dream (scam)..but it just doesn't work well with the shorter rounds...It will leave, hard to remove, carbon rings in your cylinder and it will not maintain the POI/POA...kind of a waste of time and ammo.

The 454C maybe,,,but the Schofield and colt is a joke in the 460. I even had an extra cylinder for my FA83 454 Casull to shoot 45 colts and it was a total Joke. Had to go so far as to change the front sight every time you wanted to shoot the 45 colt cylinder. ....sure I can shoot 7MM RemMags in my 338 Winchester..but again a total waste of time and ammo.

I would say I have no use for such a thing, but in reality that applies to most of my revolvers. I don't use them for carry and have only toyed with the idea of hunting with one yet. That said, its no dumber than most of mine.:scrutiny:

Procure a minimalist reloading set w/.45 Colt Dies, a box of 250 grain RNFP bullets, a pound of Alliant 2400, and load 17.5 grains of powder under them. It'll feel like .38 wadcutter ammo in an N-frame smith. But it won't ACT like it on the far end.

I own a 460 with a 5" bbl (the model John Malcovich carries in RED). It is a fantastic gun, and balances really well. I don't hunt with it, but it's my favorite gun. Despite what some people say, I find mine to be acurate enough with any load. Lear how to adjust your aim if you don't want to mess with the sights! I also have no problem straping it to my hip for a day hike if I'm in griz country. More than a day though, and it would get a little old. I'm also a bigger dude though, so that probably helps make the weight less noticable.

Enjoy the new hand cannon. They are a riot to shoot no?
