I've been thinking of buying 2 new large cap. safes and stocking one with Marlin Model60's and the other with 22.lr ammo, cleaning supplies and spare parts.

They will be sitting in their boxes mostly, but maybe one or two used for training others,a few would be given away as gifts, and the others would be for handing out to trust worthy unarmed friends and neighbors in case of a SHTF situation.

Any thoughts?

If you really feel the need to and have the funds available then sure, whatever makes you happy.Depending upon of course what kind of scenario you have in mind,a a safe full of SKS's or Maverick 12 gauges might be a better choice,or a mixture of the 3.

A large safe of .22LR;dang,that's a whole bunch of shooting!

If you buy a bunch of identical rifles all at once, you're going to set off BATF alarms.

Other than that, here's what I think.

Assuming that you have really good reasons for picking .22LR for the chambering (and I can think of a few, I guess) then I probably wouldn't pick a semi-auto. If this is a gun you're going to be passing out to somewhat inexperienced folks, I think they'd be better off with something a bit simpler and more accident proof.

BUT, assuming that you have really good reasons for picking a .22LR semi-auto, (and again, there are a few) then I probably wouldn't pick a tube feed. Again, going back to the inexperienced users, it's better to give them something that can easily be put in a state where it's OBVIOUS it's unloaded--like you can in a design with a detachable magazine.

Here are the top 4 that I've had in mind.
I picked the Model 60 because they're the cheapest out of the other three and they are eaiser to find.

#1:Model 60 (Semi-auto,Tube fed,no mag's to loose or fumble with)
#2:Model 795 (Semi-auto,mag. fed)
#3:915(Single shot)
#4:925 (Magizine fed,Bolt action repeater)

I've thought of both the Pro's and Con's of trying to teach someone how to handle a semi-auto rifle under extremely stressful situations.

But the other reason I chose the Model 60 is because I know it better than any firearm around.

Another reason for 22 is because it might not be a "Man stopper" but it will defend your life better than throwing a rock at the attackers.

(Again not a flame post)

Several guests or family members could provide cover fire with the Marlins while a shooter using a full power rifle reloaded, or woved to a better position. Some of my family members won't touch anything larger than 22 rimfire.
I wouldn't want to be hit with a 22 rimfire, I would try to stay out of the way.
I have a Marlin 60, I like it, I just wish the loading port had been placed closer to the barrel, so you could slide the rounds down the groove between the tube and barrel and they would fall in the port.

Interesting idea with some good reasoning behind it, but I'd bet that folks that are only willing to shoot .22lr would suddenly find an SKS just fine in a real SHTF situation. Certainly train the basics with the .22, but if you're going to pay for a half dozen rifles I'd put the money into a gaggle of $90 SKS rifles instead.

if it makes you happy go for it. that is a significant investment though. the safes alone will be expensive, then you gotta fill em. i try not to buy any gun i dont have a use for. this is because i do not have extra cash, not because i dont want too. sometimes its tough being broke and in school:(

see if you can go through your gun club. won't look as suspicious and you might get a better deal. just be the coordinator of a "group buy" :)
