Here's an email that just arrived from our friends at Smith & Wesson:

Dear Smith & Wesson Customer,

Gun owners are facing a pivotal battle for the future of the Second Amendment in the upcoming election on November 4th, 2008 --- and your help is needed, NOW !

If this election goes against us, anti-Second Amendment politicians could win the White House and a stronger majority in Congress; and have control of Federal agencies, key Congressional Committees and the Federal Judiciary.

Now, more than ever, we must protect our Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms from those who would take those rights away.

The best way to do that is through membership in the National Rifle Association [NRA], and I urge you to JOIN NOW.

Join by calling 1-877-672-2000 or by visiting a special NRA membership website, www.insureyourgunrights.com.

It will cost you the discounted price of $25.00, you'll receive a free magazine subscription, $1000 insurance policy and a multi-tool --- but most importantly, you'll be standing tall when America's gun rights are on the line.

Remember…the NRA's strength to save the Second Amendment comes from you. And with the biggest battles just ahead, they need your help more than ever. Resolve to take a stand for America's gun ownership rights, and JOIN the NRA today.

Sincerely,

Michael F. Golden,
President
Smith & Wesson

I'll take Smith & Wesson seriously when it rescinds the deal it signed with the Snopes Clinton-Liar Gore regime.

In all fairness to Smith & Wesson, what happened was not an informal "deal" with anyone. The previous owner, an international conglomerate based in the U.K., made an out of court settlement - sometimes called a "stipulated settlement" with approximately 30-some odd cities and state attorney generals that had a suit pending in various federal courts. While it is true that the Clinton White House was behind all of this, the Feds. weren't a party in the suit. The judges in the suit formally made the agreement into a court order. That's a far cry from a deal.

When the current owners of the company bought Smith & Wesson, part of the purchase agreement was that they would have to honor this court order.

If you ever read the agreement/court order your hair will stand on end, - particularly when you realize that the document is a boilerplate - intended to cover the entire handgun industry. Smith & Wesson is only named in the heading.

The Clinton plan was to either gain total control over the entire handgun industry, with an anti-gun “oversight committee” running each company, or drive any holdouts into bankruptcy. They came close to succeeding, and if Al Gore had been elected President they probably would have.

Cool. Just used it to sign up one of my cousins in Mass. for a one year membership. The NRA will get their extra $10 from me sooner or later anyway.

"I respectfully submit that we have enough "join the NRA" threads in activism to do the job."

I submit that we can never have too many.

I signed up under this deal too. $25 for the insurance, tool plus the magazine seems like a good deal to me.

+100

I remember working on the "And we'll ask, where were you?" NRA campaign to bring up membership.

Anyone else remember that?

Except they don't. S&W sells double-stack pistols, AR-15's with all the evil features (adjustable stocks, flash suppressors), and over-10-round magazines.

The agreement that the UK holding company made is dead and gone, and in no way affects the current S&W that I can see.

I think you are probably right, but only because when Al Gore failed to become president the petitioners - mostly anti-gun city governments - gave up, and also the courts were starting to dismiss their lawsuits.

However the court settlement is still on record, and while at this late date it's unlikely, the petitioners could still push it if the political climate in Washington was more friendly. But if they did their chances of succeeding would be open to question. The current company owners have followed a policy of keeping a low profile, which so far has worked.

so now that S&W has a substantial investment in their M&P15 they are jumping on the bandwagon and being proactive about a new AWB? how active were they last time when they had less to lose?

Bobby

Look, they made a mistake with the Klintonistas. They now seem to be trying to get themselves back on track.

I'll give 'em two "attaboys" for that.

In theology, they are doing the part of repentance - turning away from their sins...er...political leanings. (Personally, I would also like to hear their "confession").

On our part, it's forgiveness - and trust (but verify) that changes are being made.

It amazes me how much pseudo-bitterness remains against S&W. I don't get it. They're getting on the right track and trying very hard to be the USA's premier brand. Still being bitter at Major League Baseball, that I get.;)

Hey the point isn't what S&W did ten years ago but what we do today and do we want to protect our rights!

Exactly.

You can't change what happened yesterday, but you can damn sure affect what happens tomorrow.

In all fairness, the people who own s&w now are not the same people who made the deal with the klintons.

The new owners ratified the HUD agreement when they purchased S&W.

The HUD agreement remains in place; it is just dormant, waiting on a new HUD Secretary to demand its enforcement.

The agreement that the UK holding company made is dead and gone, and in no way affects the current S&W that I can see.

Could you provide us with a copy of the subsequent agreement between S&W and HUD wherein the original agreement was cancelled? A copy of a court order to that effect would serve nicely as well.

Contracts with the federal government do not end simply because no one is enforcing them currently. S&W is able to not abide by the terms because no one is pushing the agreement.

That's a good question, where the hell has the NRA been on concealed carry at schools?
First, we believe in absolutely gun-free, zero-tolerance, totally safe schools. That means no guns in America's schools, period ... with the rare exception of law enforcement officers or trained security personnel.

Thanks Wayne, I'll be sure to send you some money so can make sure high school and college students continue to be easy prey for mass murdering psycho maniacs.

The new owners ratified the HUD agreement when they purchased S&W.

Although they are named in the formal stipulation's heading, HUD was never a party in the lawsuite. Any lawyer will tell you that only the parties should be in an out-of-court settlement, so it's interesting that HUD managed to be mentioned. There is a story behind that, but I won't go into it now.
