Two Questions

1.) Do a Thompson .45 Submachine Gun and a 1911 .45 ACP use the same ammunition?

2.) If they don’t this question is moot (and boy don’t I look stoooopid) I know the longer barrel will give the Thompson more accuracy (I am aware that that would be a relative term) but would the bullet hit any harder coming from the Thompson than a 1911 pistol?

I suppose this question could also apply to a .22

No you don't. If you're not into that kind of thing it would be very confusing.

A "Colt .45" and a .45 Thompson don't use the same ammo and it's not an unreasonable mistake for you to make, but Ridgerunner gave you good answers.

Can you explain that answer please? Unless you refrence a .45 long colt revolver here

A 1911 .45 a thompson and an M-3 are all 45 acp

That's exactly what I am referencing. The common name of many guns gives little hint to the ammo unless you are "into guns". The OP thought he asked a stupid question, but he certainly did not.

You're taking the discussion into the weeds and obscurity, which is where "gun nuts" tend to take it, but from a high level it can be very confusing and it's not stupid in any way to be confused about all of it.

I think he means long colt. He said ridge runner gave good answers. He wouldn't have turned a round in the next line & said they were wrong

THe 1911 and 1921 Thompson SUb Machine gun use the same
.45 ACP ( Automatic Colt Pistol ) cartridge. The 1921 Thompson
fired with an open bolt design, not the most accurate system.
The THompson also was succeeded by the 1927, a smei-automatic
version of the 1921 which fired from a closed bolt. Auto-Ordnance
still makes the 1927 in various versions with a 16.5 inch barrel to make
it legal. The volocity gain in the Thompson is not that great due to
the powder used in the relatively short ACP case, and quick burning
powders.

The M3 Sub-machine gun unlike the Thompson which had many forged
and milled parts was made of many stamped metal parts and it wasn't
known for great reliability. The M3 was also in .45 ACP

May be a good thing considering your last two posts. He asked about a 1911 and you started going off about a .45LC.

No, I tried to be nice by saying that he wasn't asking a stupid question but you failed to recognize politeness when you see it. That or you don't have a grasp of English, or likely it's just both.

You know, simple things like reading all the posts in a thread before posting, using your words, that kind of thing.

I know it's getting hard to keep that up around here, but being nice now and then might not hurt things.

I can see the concept is leaving here, and that's too bad.

I just don't see why anything about a .45LC was needed in a thread about 1911s and Thompsons. It seems to me that it did nothing other than just add to the confusion.

45 GAP...a solution to a problem that never existed in my opinion.

It was intended to give the performance of the 45 acp in a smaller framed gun...it came close. I think it will fade into oblivion pretty soon because it relies on the lighter bullets (185 and 200 grains)...most diehard 45 acp people prefer the slow, heavy 230 grain loads because they have better terminal ballistic performance, and I don't mean fps and ft.lbs. either.

Once again, the point was that the common name of guns has little to do with the caliber they use. I am betting pretty good money the OP Treo understood EXACTLY what I meant and frankly that's all I care about.

Trying to be nice to someone and letting them know that there ARE no stupid questions is now an offense on THR? I guess I shouldn't be surprised to see it get to that.

You and those colored letters LOL...... Good thing is I can always tell when you've been in a thread :)

BAN ERIC

Oh wait, BAN ERIC

And for the record, there is no such thing as 45 "Long Colt", it is just 45 Colt and anyone or any box that says different is perpetuating the use of the wrong terminology.
