Thompson Contenders Anyone Still Use Them

I'm also a fan of the 7-30 Waters. Great deer round from the Contender.

I remember in the past reading how a lot of people who were using .30-30 barrels on their contenders and hand landing pointed bullets in their cartridges rather than the round nose bullets needed in lever action .30-30s. What advantages does the 7-30 offer over such .30-30 "contender loads"?

"Smaller bullet, faster speed, less recoil and flatter trajectory."

Steve in PA, Wow! Nine words to say what a magazine would have used three pages to tell. ;) I love it. I don't hunt and have no need for one but you guys make me wish I had a 7-30 Waters barrel.

I have had one since the late 80s or early 90s, can't remember which, but have a .30-30 Super 14 barrel that is great fun and a .45-70 Super 16 barrel that is simply no fun at all. Pulling a pin on a grenade and holding it would be as much fun. I'd really still love to have a .223 barrel for it, and our local gun shop usually has used barrels for them on hand, and there's generally a .223 in the mix, so I'll probably eventually get one of those as well.

love my TC's.

17 HMR Fox Ridge 18"
223 21"
14" 35 Remington
14" 44 Mag
Super 16 45-70

And all of them are a load of fun to shoot. I think the 35 Remmy gets the most attention...I have Trailboss loads that are easier to on the wrist than my Blackhawk with 38 special loads and then you can turn around and use some 220 gr speer loads that will get the attention of folks a few shooting lanes down. Same with the 44 Mag. The 45-70...well...yeah...that was my first TC barrel and its still my favorite. :)

two old ones with lots of barrels and a T/C large pistol pac case . Yes the .35 Reminton has taken a few hogs and deer in the day. I was good to 150 yards with a 2x Leupold on it since the mid 80s . The 45/70 barrel is rude but still a trip. Mine is 16" so I can use it with a stock. The .22K hornet and .17 K hornet barrels saw LOTS of use. I love .22 Jet and I think that and a .22 rimfire and a .25-35 were my first barrels maybe in late 70s !
