Thoughts on a home intrusion

Good day all.

Last night, there was an intrusion in my home. I thought I would tell the story, so you all can see and learn from "tactical errors."

Around 2:30am, a friend of our neighbor showed up after an evening of bar-hopping (which is complicated, considering there are only two bars in town.) Our neighbor lives in the garage/in-law apartment across the driveway from our house. Both buildings are house 150 on the street, but theirs is 150-B.
Anyway, she came to the wrong house. And on finding both main doors locked, she went to our third door. This was our first tactical error. At Christmas, we unlocked that door so we could run a power cord through it. We never locked it again. However, we've always kept so much junk in front of it, we assumed it would be impossible to enter through. Obviously, it was not.
When the girl entered through that door, the commotion woke me up in the next room. However, I had a fan on, and assumed it to just be my cat climbing the door like he always did. This was the next error. I ignored it. I even looked out and saw her flashlight beam in the hall. But I assumed it to be my sister, as she doesn't like to walk in the dark. I went back to bed.
The intruder went all the way to the back of the house, and shined her flashlight in the parent's bedroom. (Yes, I do still live at home.) My parents confronted her at this point, and saw her out. Fortunately, this was not a violent intrusion. But this was another error. I have the only handgun in the house. The rifles and shotguns are in the parent's room, but none of them are "tactical," the most useful one being a Winchester 94. And when they confronted her, they did so unarmed except for a vacuum hose extension.
In all, it is a good story to see what NOT to do.

Thanks for sharing.

This highlights the importance of keeping a flashlight along with your HD guns, so that you can properly ID whomever may be in your home.

We can all use a reminder to be better prepared.

Tactical or troll story? Where do you live? Thats would make a huge difference on how you allowed all this to go on in your home in the middle of the night. But IMHO nothing should be ignored out of the ordinary if it's something going on in your home in the middle of the night. Your lucky it turned out like it did.

Second what Jimbo said. My dog will make LOTS of noise if anybody other than myself or my dad comes into the house, she can recognize everything from our car doors shutting to our footsteps. Anything out of the ordinary doesn't go without some serious barking.

People say that a dog can't be counted on to bark or alert you every time someone comes to the door. They obviously haven't met my dog. I mean EVERY time.

Wait a minute. You had a drunk girl come into your house and you let your parents show her out?
you need to get your own place.

You left a door unlocked since Christmas? If the intruder had evil intent, I shudder to think what may have happened to you and your family. The first step in deterring home invasions is to harden your house security. Hopefully this incident leads you take steps to make your place more secure.

The solution to this sort of situation is not always a more "tactical" firearm. Indiana Boy has this exactly right. Flashlights to identify the intruder, a firearm to deal with bad guys. This could have gone wrong in so many ways.

Lock the doors, get a dog. That'll help, but the biggest failure here was your mindset. I work 3rd shift, sleep during the day and have kids at home, and five dogs. Most of the time, their noises don't bother me, but if I hear something out of the ordinary, I'm wide awake in an adrenaline rush, listening to identify. If I can't, I'll grab my pistol and open the bedroom door.

Never have it been an issue. It's usually nothing, usually UPS or the meter reader. Still, it's better to check and be sure than to ignore it.

Your situation ended in possibly the best way it could have. Next time you might not be so lucky. Prevent the next time now.
