When you first purchase a new BP firearm do you need to break it down and give it a good cleaning? I've noticed that they come somewhat lubed and packaged well. My purchase was a urberti 58 in .44cal. Any opinions would be greatly welcomed...thank y'all in advance. This lady loves to shoot! BP Tess

You need to clean out the preservative, certainly from the cylinder and the chambers.
Clean off the frame, run a patch down the barrel and make sure it's cleaned out of preservative.

Depending upon the model of gun, blackpowder collecting on the cylinder arbor might cause it to stick. Remington designs are noted for this. Be prepared to clean the arbor out. Lubing might help ... but it might also just colect residue and turn into mush. Colts are more forgiving.

Mainly, be careful that the chambers and the barrel are all clear!

I do.

When you get a new gun from the dealer, it has been my experience that they use a good "gun oil" on it. I do not used gun oil on my black powder weapons, I use olive oil. This is my preference and this is why I break them down and clean them; then oil them up with virgin olive oil (that's the kind my wife buys. She also does not know I use her spaghetti strainer for the small parts).

This is true ..the packing oil and B/P doesn`t mix well ...you can shootem out of the box but they`ll bind up real fast ...I always at least take the grips off and do a hot water and dish soap cleaning , dry it off with the hair dryer and oil it up with a food grade oil .
