oooooooooowheeeeeee!!

This was a day to remember! What a kick, I loved it! You were right Duncan...I was out playin'. This 58 is an awesome gun. 25grs REAL Goex, wonder wad with the "special lube",ease her down with a leather ended dowel, loaded other five. Then seat a .451 lead ball in each, ease her down tight, just a sliver of lead came off each...little more lube, #10 remmington cap on each nipple (ouch...no pun intended!:D )Worked like y'all said! I have to admitt...the first round,I was nervous, but POW, at least I hit the paper! I am hooked. I had no problem with fouling. I put 36 rounds through her. I agree that the "LUBE" is definatly a plus. Clean up was fine. Used a blow dryer after hot water and soap, got all the nooks and crannies real good. Bore butter in hand and swabbed it real good, messy. No rust in sight. Afterwards, put "lube" back through barrel. Soaks right up. I took pics, will post soon! Thanks everyone...I'm sure more questions will follow:rolleyes:

BPTess,

Hard to see how you couldn't like what you just done.

Marvelous, aren't they, a big Ka-Boom, a little recoil, a big cloud of smoke and a wondrous aroma.

Where'd you find BP and how much, just to start a data base.? I paid 14.79 +tax, and plan to go back buy out the rest, only bought 5 pounds the last trip.

I don't think I am gonna offer to share, but would like to have enough on hand should they decide we mortals should not have access to it.

What's your next buy,and does your SO share your enthusiasm?

Cheers,

George

Tess, That's great! :) I'm glad it all went well for you your first time out. It also means that you must have done a good job stoneing (smoothing up) the parts. You may also want to smooth up that cylinder pin next time you have it out. If you run your fingers over it you will feel little ridges on it and that's fine, but they sometimes are just a little rough. Run some sand paper over it until it shines but don't remove any metal.
After you get your "Home gunsmithing book" it will show you some really good tricks to keep that Remington running smooth.Mike

Mornin'! I got my BP at Gaf & sons. $14.34+tax. You have to order a $20 min and of course I had the haz mat fee. Case price was $10.59. Mike I will smooth out my cylinder pin today. I did look it over but didn't make it shine! Hopefully I'll get my books by next week;) . I was really surprised on the accuracy. It had been a while since I'd shot a revolver with fixed sights. I put a scope on my S & W .357 mag. revolver. I like to deer hunt with it.
George I have no Idea on my next purchase...oh there will be one:D . I share my outdoor passions with my 3 1/2 old son. No SO right now. We turn alot of heads when Mama brings him to the range! I'm 41...haven't been married since 89 and didn't think I could have any little one's! SURPRISE! So...it runs through his veins! Oh for got to tell y'all, I started out with light loads...kept coming low. Beefed up and she looked good at about 25yds. Is that a pretty good distance to start out? Keep the info comin'! Teresa

Tess: Welcome to the forum and to the Blackpowder community. My first BP gun was a Ruger Old Army which was purchased almost twenty years ago and I shoot it to this day (why not, Rugers don't wear out). Since you're in Central Indiana, you might want to drop into Friendship to watch the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association matches. It happens in July and it's one of the biggest gathering of the BP community. You can buy virtually any BP accessory or gun there, meet lots of folks from all walks of life who share one thing in common - their passion for BP guns.:D

If you don't mind traveling, Kalamazoo has a big French & Indian War Conference this March. Dr. Todd Harburn and a few other notables will be presenting there.

Tess,
I know how you feel. What gun next? I got my first Ruger Old army for Christmas from my wife. My .36 cal 1851 navy is arriving on Feb. 1 from cableas and I'm stiull looking for the next one. Can't have enough of it.:)

Tess, 25 yards is great! Most people find that the Remingtons shoot way to high but it's my understand that Pietta has been making a correction on that . I know my new 51 Colt Pietta was a little low but dead on for windage.
That's really not the norm for these C&B revolvers.
Several of us hunt Deer with our Remingtons and I have never had one go over 40 yards. If you are useing Goex 3f you can load 40g in the chamber and a wad and still compress a ball over the wad with no problem. Then place a little lube over the ball. Be ready for a big BOOM! but it's really accurate. I keep my shots under 25 yards. This year I'm going to use some conicals that a friend sent me, they are about 200g. and fit over 35g of Goex with no wad over 40g. of Pyrodex "P". Talk about a blast!! It hurts your ears if your not wearing ear plugs:) At 20 yards I can keep them inside a softball . Good enough for Deer.
This will also be what I carry when playing with the Bear here in WV this summer. My hobby is photographing and tracking WV Bear. I have a Ruger.44 mag and a .357 but I still just carry my Remington. Have fun with that new smoke maker:D Mike
Here is a link to a thread about loading 40g in your Remington .44

Mike,

Funny, my new Rem, back then, shot low. If I hadn't cut the bottom of the target with 1 ball, I would have thought I missed the whole target butt.

Took a 1/16 inch of the blade after that, dead on for elevation, and perfect for windage.

Cheers,

George

Is it really strange that I shot low until I changed the load? Seems like at 25yds it wouldn't make that much difference. Ya know...close range and all. I'm gonna go out again this weekend and shoot. Maybe it's just the crazy way I line up my shot...I used to be a true blonde until the gray started peeking through;) !!! LOL! We'll see how the second time around goes. Teresa

Hi Tess,
Some pistols are very individual about what load they “like” for accuracy, (mine are hogs though, they digest everything I feed them and are still more accurate than me, lol). I read posts by some that say that they don’t get good accuracy with bigger charges, but that hasn’t been my experience and maybe your pistol likes the heavier charges.

You might try shooting different powder charges from a bench rest and see where they hit on the paper and record that for future reference. Start with say 25gr for six shots, then 30gr for six, and so on at various known distances and see if your pistol prefers a certain powder charge at a certain range to hit where you want it to hit.

Hope this helps you out.
:)

Tess,
First, I grew up in East central Indiana in a little town no one ever heard of, Redkey. I miss the hardwoods and the cornfields and rural Indiana in general.
I miss the journies to Southern Indiana and of course Friendship in the spring (or fall).

Second, My Pietta's '58 Rem.'s really like 35 grn BP and are far more accurate than I am. but they are also accurate with 40 Grns with the ball only on top and bore butter ot RK's Lube over the ball. Lots of BP smoke and accuracy too!

Tes, The only other thing I would like to ad to the ideas above for finding the load that works best for you is to make sure you clean the barrel spotless before trying or testing a new load. It will make a big difference in most guns.
A good bench rest and shooting no more than 12-15 yards will give you a good idea of what load your gun likes best.
Don't worry about where your hitting for now, just aim the same way each time and see what kind of groups your getting. You can play with the sights once you find a load that shoots one big hole in the paper, one small hole is even better!:) Keep notes as Low Key suggested so you will know what you have tried and how it worked out.I like to mark and save the targets with all the info right on it. Mike

I forgot to mention about cleaning the barrel between different loads, but Mike remembered it for me! :)

I like it when I shoot one big hole in the target, I'm working up to one little hole in the target and my ultimate goal it just one hole in the target! :D
I may never get there, but I'll have fun tryin.

Just thought I'd update on all the fixins'. I should be gettin' my books anytime now. I'm planning on going shooting today...rained just about all weekend here...warm though! Love to read all the daily posts and threads. So much knowledge and nice looking guns. Amazing guns! Teresa

Tess,
Just as an add on to the 'shooting high / low' thing. Sometimes I shoot a Chinese scaled .22LR copy Mauser with a tele sight. It is very accurate at 50 mtrs but I normally shoot Blazer ammo which I sighted in with. A friend gave me some Eley a few weeks ago and I put 5 rounds down. The Eley shot a good 5 inches higher than the Blazer at the same range and a much tighter group.

Sorry to bring in non BP guys but I did get special dispensation from the Duke of Wellington!!

Don't care if yer wearing "Wellies" or not! It's a black powder forum! :) Only know wellies cause it's something the gunsmith refers to wearing!

You guys are a hoot!! Well...I went out to shoot, and boy was it a challenge. Had a little more trouble today on accuracy. I did make notes and shoot from a padded stand with bags. A couple of times, from the same chamber, I shot low and at least 12 inches left. Found a big piece of fouling way back in there. Better after removal:) . A few shots...don't know what the heck happened, think I flinched before the shot. I really love this 58. BTW the tallow lube is a hit. Got a couple of fellows using it and they can get many more rounds through before swabbing. They don't use wad over powder...or DIDN'T before. I gave them some wads out of my container...and the receipe!;) Teresa

Hello again everyone, I received my books a few days ago and wow...they are full of info. Thank you for telling me about them. I'm out today to target practice. I think I'll stay around 25 yds and switch up some loads. Also, using the dowel rod W/ leather on end is much easier to apply my caps on my 58. the #10's work great. Teresa

Teresa, This is funny but I was just thinking about you and was going to make a post asking if anyone had heard from or if we should get a posse together to find you:)
I'm glad you liked the books, #10 caps and the doll rod idea. As for working up loads I like to do that from a really good solid rest and start at 10-15 yards. Work up a load that will give you a really great group and then move out to maybe 20, then 25 and so on. Shooting out to 70-75 yards is really fun and I think you will be surprised just how well you can do at that distance. Have fun and stay safe! Mike

I was testing my new used Remington few days ago and I have to say that it was GREAT shooting BP revolver! Only thing that disappointed me (just a little) was that there weren't as much smoke as I had hoped :D . I was using Swiss 3fg, maybe I should buy Wano 2fg for "smoking".

Finlander, You don't say how much powder your using or how it's loaded but you should get plenty of smoke with Swiss. My Goex 3f will smoke you out on a calm day to the point that I have to Wait for the smoke to clear to see where I hit the target! I use 35-40 g. of powder under a .454 ball or Conical. The same is true if I'm using the Pyrodex "P" in my Remington or in my 51 .36 Colt. My Colt likes 25g.and still has enough smoke to make it fun. Mike

Try a minimum of two grams, this is a MINIMAL loading for the Remington, a military pistol, meant for real horrorshow putting folk down.

This is ten grains (Sorry mixing weight schemes, think it equals 750mg) UNDER the maximal loading. (As much as one may stuff in it!)

2.0 to 2.5 grams SHOULD be quite smokie enough!
