Ok, so here is the deal, I am having a 284 Winchester built on a pre 64 style short action that is brand new of from a winchester stealth 308. I want to be able to single load 180 grain jlk's in it. Also, I want to be able to load up hunting rounds for it. What do you think about using the winchester actions? Jim See from centershot rifles will be doing the build and feels the action can be used and made accurate. I trust his word. I am asking y'all what your opinions are on it and if you have had any experience with a build like this. Also, what do you guys think for twist rates? 1 in 9"? 1 in 8.5"? barrel is going to be 24 to 26" long. This is going to be used to shoot white tails at longer ranges (300 to 600 yards). Also, I want this to be a 1000 yard plus rifle. I want your thoughts, experience, opinions etc. on custom gun builds.

65nut,

While the .284 as originally loaded by Winchester is a short action round, once you start loading the long, heavy bullets best suited for LR shooting, the cartridge OAL becomes too long for a short action. Of course, it you don't mind single loading because the cartridge is too long for the magazine, and partially removing the bolt to remove an unfired round from the chamber, then the short action will work. No problem using a Winchester action in and of itself; all my custom built rifles are based on Winchester actions.
