THR not a good idea-not PC

I dont talk about guns at work much, mainly cuz the people dont really seem to be interested, although a few are gun owners. I do take off every year for dear season though. Now when all the free samples of hunting magazines come in for the waiting room, they end up being sent to me. Saves me a few bucks so I dont care if they know I like guns :neener:

Seems an awful lot of IT types shoot. What's with that? ;) JK, I'm not really a SysAdmin or something, I just build computers for fun. But then, I build guns for fun, too. I can visit THR from work at the gun shop, I popped in yesterday for a minute until I had a customer. :)

THR is Filtered

I can't access THR or TFL or Frugal Squirrel at work... the filter picks them off as "weapons" sites. But DU comes through just fine.

Guns and related items in the workplace...

Glad I am where I am. So long as customers don't see our guns, there is no problem with them being there (a few of the "priveledged" :scrutiny: customers have been allowed to view or handle).

We actually have a hole in our south wall (one side of the cinderbrick) because a former emplyee a couple years back was a real lowsy shot.

Well there is a way to get around the barrier. It ain't pretty or fast but it does, I've used it when at some of my customers during lunch. You need to know if they are running a regular phone system or a digital one, it will make a difference.
IF it's a regular phone system, just use the PC's built-in modem and dial up, no firewall, not tracking,
IF it's a digital, you can get an adapter and do the same thing.

I set network policy.

No blocks. No filters.

Peer-to-peer is verboten. However, if you screw up, it's not a termination or even a nagging offense, but IT will only clean your machine once. After that, if it scums up, you pay to have it cleaned or learn to de-scum on your own. If you can't do either, you can't do your job and you're gone. That's the cost associated with scumware.

If you can run sharebear, or morpheus, or whatever and not have to call me, more power to ya. It's only a problem when you make us put the HD through the fluff and dry and you can't do it yourself. In that case, it's a big problem. In fact, it's insurmountable - after the first time.

We cover the Symantec AV and firewall. Self-inflicted wounds are, well, self-inflicted wounds.

What you do on your time is your business, including lunch and breaks. If management is so remiss that you wind up bored, surf in the middle of the day with our blessings.

Opera licenses are paid for by the company, including for your personal use at home. If you prefer Firefox, go for it. Stick to IE and you're responsible if your machine scums up due to user-authorized toolbars, enhancements or the like. IM is frowned on but if you can do it without my being inconvenienced, fine.

I guess it's a libertairian kind of thing: you can do whatever you want so long as your job is done and nobody else is troubled by your activities - ESPECIALLY, the cantankerous, crochety, mis-named "help desk manager" (me).

Needless to say, NOBODY ever calls with a "Hawk, my machine is running slow / getting pop-ups" after the first time.

Seem fair? I think so, but then I would :p

THR is so NOT blocked that certain of the employees, I'm sure, notice that little green light that indicates I'm "online".

working for a canadian company that prohibits firearms in the workplace , I find it amusing that our net system will allow use to look up thr and other sites but not porn ( glad about that) I guess there some hunters up there in It I was laughing today when one of the office staff who knows I shoot , asked if I can fix them too. gee what do you know .

Every so often a geek site I go to runs a poll on pocket contents or a poll on weaponry. Be warned. Geeks are armed. 99% carry knives, many more than one. Many shoot, many of those that do, shoot often.

Maybe it's just cause we're 1337 and got mAd sMarT bRa1nz. :neener:

There are ways to try to subvert the system, depending on the system.

However it's not recommended if you want to keep your job, or stay away from trouble from the institution if you are detected.

We used to have internet access at work - but when our boss found out that employees were paying thier bills online and booking airline reservations he got a little upset and we no longer have access.

god bless being self employed. depending on the field sure it has some drawbacks, but I work from home, make my own hours, and no bag of crap with something to prove is looking over my shoulder.

Asking who complained is a waste of breath. Facing your accuser is an old fashioned notion. I am left wondering most of the time if there even is an accuser. I get the feeling it's just a hypocritical excuse for the boss to excercise his power trip.

Like the time my boss told me that co-workers were afraid of me because I was a hunter and owned high powered rifles. This just before he left on vacation to go turkey hunting with his shotgun. He seemed rather undone by the fact that worthless opinions don't matter to me.

I even have a picture of my 1911 as my wallpaper.
I had P95carry's Raging Bull muzzleflash pic for mine.

Now, thankfully, I dont have to sit at a computer at work, so I dont have it as my wallpaper. I had a few people ask about it, but no one ever said anything negative. Never heard anything about it from my boss, or his boss.

Never had a site I was trying to go to blocked, and most of the ones I access at work are gun-related. The exception is email.

I always checked the site when I was in Highschool. I only had one teacher ask me about it, and he really didn't care. I just tried not to view any threads that might have pictures of firearms.

There is so much blocked where I work, internet access is a joke.

But, a directional antenna, my laptop, and a wireless router, and bingo. I can surf whatever I want.

I work 6p-6a and my upstairs bedroom window points right at my place of work, about 100 yds away. I can only get about 5-10Mbs though, I have to burn through a large garage and another wall to get into work.

It works for me.

I am the overlord on IT around here -- we have a simple policy. No porn, and don't install ANYTHING on your computer that I don't authorize. If we ever find porn on your computer, you are fired. If we ever find a toolbar, IM, or anything else that I have not authorized, you are fired.

The rest of the time we don't care what you look at -- get your job done and it is all good. Don't get your job done and you are fired.:D

All internet activity at my work place is monitored very closely. So I basically keep it on company business when on their computer but then again that is why I bring my own (laptop) untracable. :D

workplace cencorship

I work for a corporation based out of Florida. They look at what sites we go to and block what they decide we should not look at. Any porn of course is off limits. Anything gun related...blocked. Radio statio access ...blocked. Some things that ought to be blocked are not

In fact having a firearm on company property ...even hidden in your personal vehicle, is grounds for immediate termination. This is a problem during deer season..when I am going directly from work to where I hunt.

Things have sure changed since the good ole days. The FFA in my high school sold raffle tickets year after year, the prize was always a shotgun or a rifle.

I don't worry about where I work too much yet . There are at least a dozen coworkers who do their fantasy sports and sports pools over the company network, not to mention a lot of people who leave real time play by play sites open during NFL, NBA, or MLB games in the evening. I use a fraction of the bandwidth that these people use and figure that one of them will get singled out long before I will for abusing the company's internet policy.

Overlord of IT... you know, one can prevent people from having the rights to be installing things in the first place and even prevent browsing porn for the most part, so you don't have to go around as IT Police firing people. Just an FYI...
