THR not a good idea-not PC

Speaking of porn, about 90 people were fired in one day where my wife works because they were passing a porn video around via email. The reason why it was even looked in to was because their company server ground to a halt from it.

Overlord of IT... you know, one can prevent people from having the rights to be installing things in the first place and even prevent browsing porn for the most part, so you don't have to go around as IT Police firing people. Just an FYI...

Thank you. Yes, I know all about that stuff. I could set restrictions up the wazoo, set up web filtering lists, etc. I have all the knowledge and equipment to do so. But I think you missed my point completely.

My way of doing things is different. When we hire people we tell them the behaviour that is acceptable and what is not. Then it is up to the employee to display personal responsibility, good judgement, and sterling character. I am NOT IT police. BUT, if it should come to my attention that you have violated policy (such as having porn on your computer -- which is explicity forbidden in the employee handbook, which you sign when you start work here) then you are toast.

So, basically the way I work is that I trust you until you prove that you are not worthy of trust. If you do prove that you are not worthy of trust, you are gone. If that is being the IT nazis, so be it.

Anybody else has this issue in their office?

Sort of.....

1) When I was working as a long-term subsititute teacher another teacher saw what I had on the screen and warned me that school policy could have me fired for visiting sites that "advocated violence or weapons". She never reported me (she was reasonably pro-gun, she often fired her fiance's .357mag) and IT or the assistant principal never spoke to me about it.

2) When I worked for the state the official policy was that mild personal internet use (mainly checking private email) was ok even during working hours, and you could do all you wanted on break-time and even during work time if you got all your work done (we were salary so they didn't really care what you did so long as you did all your work). Well, I was given no details but during my last week (so a few weeks after I gave notice I was leaving) I was told I couldn't use the net anymore since I was "abusing" it (I got my work done and didn't use it more than others so I can only guess that my "weapons related" surfing is what they were referring to, that or they were harrassing me since I was leaving)

At my current job I don't have to worry about it since I can't use the internet at all. I am in a patient care position in a psychiatric hospital so I don't exactly have the time.

All people who work anywhere have this as a prerequisite as a given, unless you like to hire turds. Also it isn't just an IT function that makes these determinations of terminations, I guess unless you are titled "Overlord". :neener:

My point of discussion is on technology. For security reasons outside of these discussions either, you should be limiting access to just what is needed at your perimeter and access points. Allowing people to install anything anytime so you can find out about it later is, let's say... not advisable. Anyway, as before. F. Y. I.
