Jaymo

I spent 28 years living in different places at the whim of the U.S. Army. As an Infantryman, many of my stateside assignments were at Fort Benning, GA. I was assigned in GA when I retired; so I saw no reason to leave.

My original home was a neighboring state of GA. Actually, the second best college football team from that state is playing for the BCS National Championship tonight. ;)

New BP shooter here

I'm new to black powder and my first revolver is a Pietta 1858 New Army Brass Frame.

bp1.jpg

Just bought it and can't wait for it to warm up outside so I can go shoot it.

I've already torn it down, cleaned and lubed it, so it's all good to go.

I will have to take a photo, but I have two currently. first is a 5.5" Uberti .44 with the newer forged frame, and the second is a 5.5" Uberti in .38 Special. The .38 is due to arrive here in a few days and I am beside myself in anticipation!

I am looking for the right stainless steel 1858 to replace one I foolishly sold back in the 1970s. Taylor's is importing the 1858 in .38-40, which sounds like one to own as well.

I sold off a forged frame Uberti a couple of years ago that had a color case-hardened frame, another big mistake. I have come to the conclusion that Remmies are for keeping, not for selling!

Welcome gents! If work would spare me for a while, I will create a map of the world with our various locations - along with all the folks from the United States, I think we now have representation from Bulgaria, Spain, Finland, England and Canada.

How can you tell if your frame is forged or not?

I am not completely sure. both of mine were sold as such and have markings on the box to support the type of manufacture.

I can understand how a forged part might be considered stronger or preferable to some folks, but for the life of me the cast frame Ubertis have been around for what, 40+ years with no issues. I think the forged frames may have been introduced to better handle the cartridge conversions available directly from Uberti?

@ Napp, I have been at Bragg for 11 years now and on occasion had to make the trip to Benning for schools and such. In fact, I am supposed to PCS here. I'm from SC and would rather stay at Bragg. I know all to well about the sacrifices you have to make to stay close to home.

@Otony, I am considering selling a black rifle to facilitate my future BP purchases. Don't think I would ever consider selling any of my BP weapons. I have become attached to them. And my kid seems to like them too.

@Octony

I searched the web and what I gather is that all Uberti '58s manufactured in 2007 and after are forged frames. So consider the source. That would be a date code [CB]. The date code on mine is [CD] meaning 2009 and that it would be a "Forged Frame".

Interesting to know. Thanks

Good information Loosenock. I for one would be most interested in finding out why Uberti felt the need to go to forged after all these years, but since both of mine are so made I guess I won't worry about it too much!

Mizar/Boris, could you please tell us a bit more about your little grip adaptor. It appears to be home made from wood, am I correct?

Roster duly corrected.. Missuramoss is reinstated!

The list is gettin' long....

Otony, yes it is home made from a scrap piece of walnut. It is attached to the frame ala T-grip style. Does good job of taking my middle finger's knuckle away from the trigger guard and it is giving me a more uniform grip.

Remington group you say? Great!

Morning,

Been bustin' caps since around '65. Here's a tiny shot of my .44. It's the best I could do with a camera in the phone I carry. Now if the attachment worked I'll be thrilled. I'm no computer whiz so it many not even work! But can I still come and play here with the other Remington pistoleros?

45-70 Ranger, welcome - that surely is a tiny picture, but it posted just fine. Is it a Uberti copy or one of the others?

I added a kirst pin retaining catch to keep the cylinder pin in place.

Are you by any chance related to Kenneth (Ken) Null? Sorry for the thread jack.

STM, that's a Pietta replica I picked up after the first owner bent the basepin and locked it up. Got it cheap and the repair was easy. This is my 5th Remington, wish I kept the others, but I was a gunsmith/dealer and when an offer was made in those days and the price was right....sold! I could kick myself.....But still have a few charcoal burner wheelguns and this one has become my "go to gun" when I want a revolver that can hit close and hard. My old 2nd. Mod Dragoon pouts as we speak!

Welcome, gentlemen!

1858 Remington, that's a fine collection - what's the matte grey finish on that snubbie?

Shoot The Moon, that Euroarms is a really nice 58. Do they all have the trigger return like that? I think that is the first one I have observed.
I have a pair of Pietta 58's blued, 8" barrels and some spare cylinders. I'll get a picture of them to post, but in the meantime, how about this one for big game?

It would look real official if the shooter at least had glasses and ear protection, but it is a funny picture and I do not know the details on if it is made of wood or what.
