Hi Folks,

I'd like to be a member of the club. Here are my SS Remmies and my Civil War gun rig. My blue 5 1/2" 1858s a due to arrive tomorrow.

I found a used 8-inch Pietta in mint condition in a gun store last night. It looks just like your 8-incher. I stripped the grips late last night and am refinishing them today. I am going to convert it with a Howell cylinder. The bluing is perfect but I'm going to thin it with Flitz paste and simulate a bit of holster wear for a semi-aged look. The triggerguard is already lightly tarnished, and so I don't have to hit it with ammonia fumes. I'll post a picture when it's finished.

The last one I ordered from Cabelas, a 5.5-incher, was poorly made. I think I simply got a lemon. This 8-incher, wherever it came from, is much better.

I must be an oddball, because I prefer the heft and balance of the 8-inch barrel.

Brand spankin' new, arrived yesterday, Pietta 8" .44!
Pleased with the fit and finish for the price of $159.99. Took it out to the range this morning, fired 30 rds clean as a whistle. Easy 6" groups at 10-15 yds. Easy peasy, point & shoot.
My Pop brought his .357 and we had a blast. I must say I really enjoy the slower pace of a muzzle loader. Just wiped down w/ dry cloth between loads & used lubed wads. No jams & no hitches, great fun.

That's a beauty and you got a great deal! I am not sure who is in charge of keeping track of this group, but I would say it qualifies you for the 1858 Club....

I have yet to get mine out to the range yet....but it has stopped snowing here now, so I will get my chance next weekend I hope....

New to THR but not to Remmys.

I have the Pietta target model, as the cylinders are so quick and easy to change, picked up a couple spares. Then got a Kirst .45 LC loading gate Cylinder and opened up the recoil shield. For accuracy, RB in the C&B is hard to beat, in .45 LC found a 185 grain SWC to be most accurate, but still shoots a little high. The 255 grain shot WAAAAY high, 200 grain less so, but too much, the 185 is OK, but think a 165 grain might be better yet.

I took it out again today and fired off 24 more shots at soda cans. Set them a little farther out, maybe 20 yards, and hit 75% of the time.
It's definitely a lot of fun & a nice relaxing pace. The learning curve doesn't seem too steep, I certainly loaded faster this time and feel like my control of the shots was a bit better. Seems like the mass of the barrel really dampens the recoil. Feels like it wants to buck the barrel upward a little, but with a firm grip and a slow squeeze it is easy enough to keep 'em on the target.
Hope you have as much fun with yours, once you finally get to take it out

New Sheriff in town

My new Pietta 1858 NA 5 1/2" Sheriff model. Only 30 rounds old! 3 1/2" groups at 12 yds. and 4 1/2" at 25. Shots a few inches low, but probably because I shot .451 instead of .454. I think the larger ball will likely bring the POI up. Want to try casting Lee conicals. My buddy shoots those to good effect.

The 8" barrel to match is near the top of my wish list.

I find the round balls to be more accurate, and I wish now I'd bought five spare percussion cylinders instead of the conversion cylinder.

Check the bargain cave at cabelas,Ive seen 1858 cylinders as low as 20 bucks on sale.

Then why not load the cartridges with round balls?
Or try some lightweight bullets to see if they shoot any better.

I bought this as a kit from the Cumberland Knife and Gun shop in Fayetteville. I was back at Ft Bragg to fill in as a "Guerilla Chief" for the Special Forces Qualification Course in the final exercise (Robin Sage). It was cool sitting around the guerilla camp fire fitting, filing, sanding and polishing away on this as I pretended to be some kinda war-lord. I was building it to give to my Dad for Christmas and got it back when he died.


After looking at more of the pretty posted photos - I gotta add, I built it over 20 years ago and shoot the hell outa it. Guests always want to shoot this one more than most of the other guns. You know, the loading, smoke, grease the WHACK of a lump of lead... great fun, that!
