I recently shipped a DPMS heavy fluted stainless steel AR15 barrel to GEMTECH to have them cut 1/2-28 threads and recut the crown. In case you're wondering the barrel has a 0.92" O.D. I didn't ask for a thread protector but they shipped the barrel back with a really nice one. I'll be attaching an AAC BLACKOUT 51T flash hider shortly but the thread protector sure is a nice touch. Anyway, I thought I'd give credit where it's due and GEMTECH did an awesome job for anyone thinking about having a barrel threaded. They make great suppressors too!!

Nice! I've been thinking of buying their 17 hmr specific suppressor, it looks like they do nice work (which seems to be the case with many suppressor manufacturers).

My smith charged me $50 to cut off and thread a 10-22 barrel. I'm sure Gemtech wasn't much more than that. ;)

Really nice job! That thread protector is really nice...never have seen one that large, in order to match the o.d. of a bull barrel. I have a RRA bull barrel AR upper, but don't have any interest in having it threaded.

What did they charge?

These services (thread, crown & thread protector) cost $229 + shipping.

I'm sure that there are less expensive options out there but this is the choice I made because it's really important that the O.D. of the threads are concentric to the bore diameter if you plan on using a suppressor.

"GEMTECH's Barrel Threading service is precise and continues full warranty coverage for your suppressor. Our skilled craftsmen have decades of barrel threading experience, and we ensure that your barrel is threaded properly and gauged concentric to avoid damage to silencers."

I don't really think of the DPMS barrel as being a bull barrel since it's 24" long and fluted but I suppose it is unless a bull barrel has to have a full 1" O.D  . I figured it was worth having the barrel threaded since it's wickedly accurate with groups in the .25 ~ .50 moa range at 100 yards using 77gr SMK ammunition. I'm curious to see how the accuracy changes once I have a suppressor attached. I might have had the barrel shortened to 20" if it weren't for the flutes.

Pretty sure that my RRA bull barrel measures .920". I'm using LWD threaded barrels on my Glocks; Ruger factory threaded barrel for my .22 pistol, and the gunsmith's threading on my 10-22. Haven't had any problems with concentricity.

The RRA bull barrel is the only one of my AR barrels that's not threaded, and I'd have no interest in threading it.

Didn't you pay more for the threading, etc., than you did for the barrel?

I think you've made that point already. No one is trying to convince you of anything. I started this thread to give credit to GEMTECH ... that's all. It's simply a data point for anyone who is considering having a barrel threaded. I have a Marlin 1895 SBL that I'd like to have threaded along with a Mini 14 so I'll probably send the rifles to GEMTECH at some point. I already mentioned that there are cheaper alternatives so everyone is free to make their own choices.

The barrel I have costs $263 these days but there's a new barrel available that would be a great option for someone. The barrel below has every feature I like/want in a barrel and I wish it was available when I bought mine about five years ago.
