Amazingly enough Hodgdon has added 3 new powders to the IMR line. They are describing them as Enduron Technology powders which features copper fouling eliminators and they say the new powders are insensitive to temperature changes.

I didn't see this one coming. I know Hodgdon has their CFE-223 for rifles and CFE-Pistol but who knew they were working on a whole line of copper erasing Extreme Powders?

BTW, the powders are IMR-4166, IMR-4451 and IMR-7977.
I wonder who is making them for IMR?

Now lets see how long it takes to see them on the store shelves. LOL

4166 is very close to varget. the other 2 are magnum class powders. they are made in Canada. they are supposed to hit the sshelves in early 2015. look on page 2 of this forum. i posted this yesterday.

Someone please post or link a burning rate chart showing those new powders.

There's nothing posted in burn charts yet on these powders, but I posted this in post: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?p=9670120#post9670120

"To get an idea of how IMR4166 stacks up to other powders in 308 Winchester, go here to Hodgdon's reloading center, there is new 4166 reloading data there: http://www.hodgdonreloading.com/

With the new formatting on the site, choose the 308 Winchester. Got to the menu and choose the bullet weights you want to see, then check only the IMR and Hodgdon powders boxes in the powder section. In the powder menu box pick only 4064, Varget, H-4895, 8208XBR and 4166 in the powder choice boxes.

Click the "Get Data" Icon. What you will get is loading data with only these powders. This way, you will quickly see how 4166 stacks up in velocity with these other good 308 powders.

It looks like 4166 is very similar to H-4895 and 8208XBR in burning speed and unfortunately, 4166 seems to be slightly faster burning than Varget and 4064."

What i hope for is an extruded powder with the exact same burn rate as Varget, but with powder kernels the size of Benchmark. A Varget-SSC of sorts, kinda like they have for some other powders. The day they make that I'll be one happy reloader. Of course, finding it may prove to be near impossible with the popularity Varget has.

If IMR4166 turns out to be a temperature-insensitive IMR 4064, I'll be all over it. Varget is really close, but isn't quite as consistent as 4064 for me at a given temp. Not that it's bad, but 4064 has turned into my most versatile accuracy powder in 7x57, 8x57, and 30-06. Between it and H4350, it loads every rifle I shoot other than 223.

IMR4166- My big question is will this be in the "Garand safe" powder selection. If so, then I may just have to get some.

Interesting that Hodgdon is bringing out new powders when they can't keep up with production of their current powders. I would love to see some CFE Pistol and BLC-2.

Does anyone know of any online sellers likely to take pre-orders for these? I'm really interested in the IMR 4451. I would assume that Hodgdon would have some reasonable quantity available at the "launch" of the product. Probably too much to hope for in the current powder climate though...

Just ordered #3 of 4166. We'll see how it does in the 8x57
I wish I could figure out which is better for the 30-06, IMR4166 or IMR4451? I have a feeling IMR4451 will perform better in the 30-06 and 8mm Mauser but there just isn't enough information available right now. You would think these days we would have been bombarded with data all over the net and in print before the powders were released. I didn't know they were available until I just by change saw data on the Hodgdon site for them.

*EDIT*
It looks like IMR4166 is VERY close to IMR4064.
It looks like IMR4451 is close to IMR4350, in the 30-06 at least.
I'm wondering why the 3 new powders still aren't on the Hodgdon burn rate chart.
Having that information would help me figure out those new powders.

IMR has loading data for both those powders in the 30-06 on their website. My choice would be 4451 for the '06. The 8x57, I have a feeling 4166 will be better.

Their online load data for 4166/8x57 shows some good starting points.

I wouldnt worry too much about unless you have a caliber with no load data published.

Give them a buzz. I had to do that with Alliant when working with Pro-2000mr in the 8x57. They said it ought to work great (lol) and 2000mr was a little slower than RL-15. It gave me a starting point. But that was with no published load data.

Hodgdon's reloading data claims 7977 will push a 140 grain 270 bullet up to 3,023 fps with pressure at 59500 psi.

If I could get it to generate 2900fps with a 140 grain bullet, have moa or better groups, and reduce copper fouling? I feel myself getting sucked in to the hype...

I'm skeptical, but willing to give it a try.
