Would you buy a car without taking it for a test drive?

If I had test driven another of the same model, yes. Brand new stuff should work right, and if it doesn't, the manufacturer should make it right.

Travis Bickle,

You are absolutely correct. Manufacturers should stand by their product; however, by taking 5 minutes and examining the revolver using this method, you could avoid the hassle of being without your gun/money for a minimum of a month or more.

Even if it's not your first gun, it sucks sending a new gun back when you could have bought another one in stock and be shooting/carrying that one.

A few years ago I loaned my SS Old Army to my brother. He figured since it was stainless steel he could wash it in the sink... he did, and then put it in the holster (wet)

A few months later I got it back and the nipples had rusted solid into the cylinder. I tried to remove them for replacement, got five out but one broke off.

Sent it into Ruger and they fixed it free of charge... plus a safety upgrade I didn't know about...

Good company, I'm looking to get a mini 14 :)

i buy my firearms from a local dealer. he keeps many stock firearms (GLOCK, Sigs, Remington, and mossbergs) but does not keep very many revolvers in stock so they have to be ordered. once my gp100 came in, both he and i inspected it using the revolver check out method that is sticky'd on the top of the revolvers forum here on THR, but it wasn't a problem that could really be seen. one was in the barrel, the other was either in the internals or in one chamber of the cylinder. we checked the headspace (visually) and everything seemed to be in good order.

so i did check it out as much as i could before taking it home, and it looked fine. i coulda missed something though. i'm not as knowlegable on revolvers as i should be. but Ruger took care of it. it has been put on the bench and shot, and is as should be. i am happy with it.

Mike - The store I bought the gun from didn't test fire it after it came back nor did they fire it before it was sent. They don't have a place to test fire guns.

BB - You couldn't see anything wrong with the gun through a visual examination.

However, Ruger did call me back today and said they found my hard case and are sending it back. So, now I'm much happier. BTW, thanks for making the good points - I learned a lot.
