TIPS ON STAYING SAFE

Learned this from a tourist guide to New Orleans:
If a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it away from you.... chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than you and he will go for the wallet/purse. RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!

**********************************
If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car: Kick out the back tail
lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy. The
driver won't see you but everybody else will. This has saved lives.
**********************************

The three reasons women are easy targets for random acts of violence are:
1. a. Lack of Awareness: swing your arms, stand straight up.

b. Wrong Place, Wrong Time: DON'T walk alone in an alley, or drive in
a bad neighborhood at night.

2. Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating,
working, etc. and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc.
DON'T DO THIS! The predator will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side, put a gun to your head and tell you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR, LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE.

3. A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or parking
garage:
a. Be aware: look around you, look into your car, at the passenger
side floor and in the back seat.
b. If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars.
c. Look at the car parked on the driver's side of your vehicle and the
passenger side. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car,
you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out.

IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY.
(And better paranoid than dead.)

ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs.
(Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot)

If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control,
ALWAYS RUN!
(The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times;
And even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN!

As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP IT!
It may get you raped, or killed. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp and often asked "for help" into his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim.
The bolded tip got my attention. Seems like a good way to get shot square in the back because the BG's going to get mad since the situation is suddenly out of his control.

However, the stealthy CCW draw is always desired, but pulling it off while a BG's holding a gun on you has a low probability of success. Added to that handicap is the inevitable gyrations involved with drawing anything bigger than a mousegun you already have your hand on hidden in a pocket.

Since the BG's going to be primarily interested in "Show-Me-The-Money" objects like your wallet, tossing it aside may provide the surprise diversion that he can't avoid following with his eyes, you may have the time you need to draw.

Opinions?

I had actually thought of that one myself...

It's just like sleight-of-hand - get their attention on something else for the 2 seconds it takes to draw and fire.

Since a mugger's primary interest is your wallet/purse/camera/cellphone, drop it instead of handing it to him, hopefully forcing him to shift his attention to retrieving it.

Don't know if it would work or not. Hopefully I'll never have to find out firsthand.

Diversion is always good.

I'd suggest feigning both extreme fear and extreme compliance also, as diversion, as this will make the BG think you're not a threat, but a mark that will give him everything he wants, possibly even be prey for other sick inclinations he posesses.

Or feign a coronary or some other medical emergency. I'd expect this would take the BG aback, even if he intended on killing you, because of the surprise and potential inconvenience.

Do I have proven evidence any of these would work? No, but I expect that they could buy time with an armed BG long enough to take the initiative.

Another tip I heard is to put a $5 and two $1 bills in a money clip, $5 on the outside. Throw the money clip and $7 and run like hell in the other direction, its a lot easier to buy a new money clip than to chase down all your credit card companies to get new cards.

Kharn

The 'throw down' wallet has been discussed before. An old wallet with a couple of bucks in it and fake ID papers to fill it out. Toss it and withdraw, or draw your gun.

The "throw down" wallet is an excellent idea.

I sometimes get credit card or member ship applications with a fake or temporary card in the envelope, with my name already on it. I put these in an old wallet for going to the city which is almost never.

Seems you would be protecting yourself two ways: if you just get rid of the attacker for a few bucks, you are far better off than trying to vindicate yourself in an self defense shooting. OTOH, if the BG continues the threat, then you might have a legal defense that you have already complied with demands and were still in fear for your life.

Much as I would like to just shoot the SOB on general principles ...

I find it pretty unlikely that a mugger would shoot you in the back while you are runing away.

Depends on the situation, but I would think he would just want to vacate the area quickly and quietly - not draw attention and commit a murder out of spite with little opportunity to gain from it.

Of course, that is trying to apply logic to criminals which is always risky - still, I think we can presume a modicum of rational self interest in most of them...

I'm willing to bet YOUR life on that, but not my own.... :neener:

May I suggest that you do not put things in your 'throw down' wallet that can be traced back to you. You don't want a PO'd bad guy looking you up in the phone book and knocking on your door.
Use your brother in law's ID instead.:p

Okay, I'll just give him my REAL wallet and REAL credit cards instead. :D

Knocking on my door ... will have to get past the dogs and then get past me. Wonderful, I have a lot better legal defense for shooting from my own home than out on the street. :neener:
