Man, 94, Shoots Self, Waits Hours for Help
02.07.2006, 06:46 PM

A 94-year-old man who accidentally shot himself in the abdomen while cleaning his shotgun is expected to make a full recovery, despite waiting until the next morning to ask for help.

Marcus Sturghill was trying to clean his .20-gauge shotgun when it discharged and hit him with a load of birdshot in the abdomen about 7 p.m. Sunday, Crittenden County sheriff's investigator Thomas Martin said.

Martin said Sturghill waited for a home health care nurse to arrive about 8:30 a.m. Monday before asking for medical attention.

Before the nurse arrived, Sturghill had cleaned the wound and wrapped it with a towel, Martin said. Sturghill was flown to The Medical Center in Memphis, Tenn., and was in stable condition Tuesday

Especially since he was hit with a ".20-gauge" load of birdshot. :scrutiny:

Man, that's one heckuva shotgun - time it right, and you can get your dove limit with one shot! Of course, you can only shoot that thing twice before you run out of shoulders... :)

OK, what part of cleaning a shot gun involves chambering a live round, flipping off the safety, pointing it at your stomach and pulling the trigger? I have cleaned my a shot gun, rifle and pistol, but I have never done that!

The next time you hear your local gun shop commando say "all you need [why do they love this phrase so?] is a shotgun with birdshot!", simply remember this report.

Probable contact range shotgun wound, 94 years of age, waited 13.5 hours before medical treatment. Just imagine if he were 22 years old, pumped full of drugs. How much killing could a 22 year old on drugs do in that time?

No weapon is a death ray. Get trained up.

Of course, the wound could have been parallel to the abdomen, rather than perpendicular. Nasty flesh wound, with burns and nothing deeper than the skin.
