What would you do?

I’ve heard about this happening to other guys, but I never thought it would happen to me…. Oops – wrong forum. :)

But seriously – Last night I was drinking a beer and trying to decide whether to bid on a S&W 27-2 on Gunbroker, when a neighbor called me on the phone. He said a guy in a van, who appeared to be drunk, had driven up and down his driveway a few times and sideswiped a tree. My neighbor got the guy to get out of the van and “settle down”. My neighbor said he’d called 911, and asked if I’d come over while he waited for the police, in case the guy got excited. I said I’d be right over.

Here’s the question – would you take a gun with you in this situation?

lol... I would take one even if I were going over to listen to the game or do something in the shop... with a drunk in the driveway.... YES :)

If you ccw to the grocery store- where you have no expectation of using a gun there- why not cross the lawn to your neighbors with one?

Do you think your neighbor knows you would, and thats why he called you?????? ;)

Well...since I carry concealed when I take out the garbage or pick up the mail - or any other time I leave the house - why wouldn't I carry in the situation you described?

Is the beer the reason you're asking? That would have no bearing on it for me. I don't drink to excess (usually) - but if I was too high to carry, I'd be too high to leave the house anyway.

Absolutely! While I would not bring a bat or anything else (I would not want anything to openly invite confrontation), if I had a weapon no way I would not go into that situation armed and concealed. You just do not know if he is armed, if he is going to go berserk, etc.

I you were just sipping on a single beer, then i would head over there. However, you will want to consider if this is against the laws for you state or not. If it is, then you may want to consider that especially since you are bring a cop over in the situation.

That is a situation that could go from bad to worse. Especially if by the actor you’re construed to be a threat.

I think the laws of the state would most likely be on your side, since you would have been on private property. But then again Some states have some whacky laws. But Id say if your neighbor was cool with you carrying, I wouldnt see any problem. Id go concealed though, no need to unnecissarily frighten the guy. People can do some crazy things if you trigger their fight or flight mechanism. This guy was probable really worked up to begin because of what just happened. Your best bet would have been to try and calm him down, but still be prepared. Make sure he's ok, or if he needs first aid or anything. Then see about his insurance if he damaged any of your property.

In this situation, I'd grab a jutte on the way out the door. Easy to tuck in a waistband and useful if the drunk is belligerent. Don't want to fall into the "when all you have is a hammer everything looks like a nail" trap.

Bingo. Illegal in NC to CC if you've had a drink. Even one (or in my case half of one) beer. So I walked on over - you can't leave a buddy hanging. Fortunately, two sheriff cars arrived just as I got there. Turns out the "drunk" had just had a stroke a few days ago and was disoriented. The officers called his home talked to his wife who was distraught wondering where he'd gone off to. The officers drove him home.

My gut reaction is yep, CCW. However, it depends on how many beers you actually had. If you were on your first, you would probably be fine.

These days the "legally drunk" alcohol percentages are so low we get there without really being impaired, but it will be used against you in court.

When a friend or neighbor is in need it's tough to say no, so we must use our best judgment.

Yep, in NC if you have been drinking, even one beer, you cannot legally carry concealed.
So in your scenario, no I would not carry a concealed weapon to the neighbors house.
However, in NC, there is no law against "open carry" after drinking a beer. ;)

Leave the gun at home and bring a 6-pack of beer. Since the cops are on the way anyhow, a beer would likely settle the feller down more than a baseball bat.

After all, it worked for O'Bama (hey, it's St. Patrick's Day) during his "beer summit."

Had a similar situation with one of my sisters not too long ago. Drunk person banging on her front door at 1am. Scary part was the girl ended up looking a lot like my gf (though it wasn't her, she was sleeping!) And yes, I carried (concealed of course) when I went over there

Needless to say, she's getting her first gun tonight :)

Illegal in Michigan to carry if you have been drinking. Yes, only 1 beer. No ETOH when you are carrying

In kentucky any drink and i mean even one and you can loose the c&c lic. Hope i never have to protect my self or family after a few, at home of course. Cold one and hot gun don't mix in this state.
