To Forage After the Big Earthquake

Are you serious?!

In the event of a large earthquake in California do you feel as though that the highways and streets are going to be shut down? They may be crowded due to people trying to leave, but there is probably not going to be enough that California is going to be isolated. :scrutiny:

In the event of a large earthquake, I would do what I need to do to get out of the state if my area is highly affected. Sure, you can go and do your 'Recon' and stay at 'Base Camp Alpha', go live like a rat trying to scavenge for food. While I will be out of state staying and living it out like a normal person.
:uhoh:

It's funny, every time somebody mentions disaster and living it out, I always fall back on the what-I-carried-backpacking idea. Believe it or not, a firearm is NOT part of the list (at least for recreational hiking; I'd certainly add something small and light for "living it out".)

Importants:
Water, food, shelter, clothing (protection from the elements), light, fire, first aid, knife, etc.

If you think a couple of guns and 1k rounds is essential to survival above food, shelter and water, well, I hope I'm the first person to come across your corpse! :neener:

California coast survival kit thread and nobody mentioned some fishing gear?
Sme fishing line, few hooks and lures would go a long way in providing food.
I know this is a guns/hunting forum, but so close to the ocean, in a built up area, you are a heck of a lot more likely to survive with fish then game.

I live in Ontario, Canada and with so many lakes around I don't really worry much about food. For ten years I've been living here, every time I went fishing I caught something.
I love it.:)

Way To Go Madcratebuilder, #15

My Grandkids attend a very Conservative school in a Very liberal University town (think "Kinsey Report") and on November 11 last year an appreciation event for vets, and proper flag-burning was being arranged. "My Grampa was in Viet Nam, and he can still fit in his uniform!" my youngest sounded off. And I got invited to say a few words. On the bottom of the hand-outs and bookmaarks every vet got were the words you quoted: "A Veteran, whether active duty, retired, national guard, or reserve, alive or dead, is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The Citizens of the United States of America' for an amount of 'up to and including my life.' " I'm asking all here, does anyone know the source of that quote? When the youngsters greeted each of us at the door with "Thank you for all you did", there were a lot of tears blotted on a lot of old uniform sleeves.

26 posts in 24 hours. Let it run, even though . . . . .

. . . . it comes up every month or so. Nuthin' wrong with a little shared forethoughts. Lotsa good hints. Don't look LIKE food while you are looking FOR food. Carry a garrotte along with any firearm. Have a cap-mounted light(s) plus a hand-held. Forget about any helpers, except close family. All my firearms are ONE caliber, except my belt-buckle derringer. Have good camo. in the event that you want to avoid becoming food. Try layin' down on your Rec-room carpet and not moving for 30 minutes; try it again on the garage floor; and again in a ploughed field. Get used to it before you need it.

Does that old gas mask even work and do you know how to use it? Also how old is that filter? In my experience with new gas masks, if the filter is not in plastic then it isn't to be used.

Properly doning a gas mask isn't exactly easy and unless you really know what you are doing I would ditch it personally. Also the one you have horribly restricts your vision making your perception very poor. I would not wear a gas mask or any NBC equipment unless I absolutely had to.

As much as I dig that Marlin I would probably just take a handgun since they are easier to conceal, unless of course it were just utter chaos in the streets. In that case I wouldn't be out in the streets! But if I had to, then I would probably take my Sub-2000 since it would be very handy in that sort of scenerio.

If you plan to loot and scavage for supplies then I hope you get what you deserve. No offense but what else could you possibly mean by "this kit is only for a day out looking for stuff" other then going out and taking stuff that isn't yours? Besides, open carry of a rifle like that after a natural disaster could mark you as a looter to law inforcement and they would likely consider you a criminal on the spot.

Since I live in Kentucky, I really don't know much about earthquakes, but, I would think a spare pair of glasses (since I wear them.) would be very important. Its not all that difficult to imagine breaking a primary pair.

That gas mask could come in handy on an everyday basis around Santa Ana and Anaheim just to filter out the stench of the illegal aliens and street bums.

ECVMatt, why the gas mask? Well, here in suburbia you never know when somebody might pop off some smelly gasses to disperse a crowd, and you never know what goodies they might be protecting.

Lone Gunner, if foraging the same as looting. Well, that is a matter of perspective.

From the above statements, you sound like a looter, not a forager. So I will second the motion that you catch a bullet right between the eyes on your first trip out stealing.

In a large earthquake, yes, I expect that the highways will be shut down. In past smaller earthquakes overpasses have collapsed, so if we have "The Big One" the roads will be effectively closed.

Regarding the gas mask, I have no formal training with it, but I have received informal instruction in its use, and I have a couple of filters that are still in date. I don't intend to use it except as a last resort.

Camouglage may come in handy, but the main advantage of BDUs, as I see it, would be the pockets. Those highly pocketted army style pants are great for stowing frequently used gear.

I have to say- I am not a looter. I merely intend to get what society has unfairly denied me. I am a victim of discrimination. I will simply reclaim what is mine.
Have fun,
Mauserguy

PS: I do like the Buck knife, but the older models were better made than the current generation.

well, when you go and reclaim some guy's TV, don't yell discrimination when he comes out pissed off with the intention of re-reclaiming it.

No offense to the OP but does anyone else get a chuckle over the image of some weirdo stalking around Orange County wearing a Gas Mask, boonie hat, binocs around their neck, a buck knife on their belt, a Jansport backpack and a lever action rifle. That kit is all fine and dandy but how about a basement/garage stocked with about 2 weeks worth of food and water and 20 - 40 gallons of gasoline and a generator? I'm not saying a rifle isn't necessary but more for defense than offense.

Lipadj46, you may have a point, and I am not offended. I do think, however, that the plasma big screen currently possessed by that rich dude will go well with my home decor after the big disaster.

Yeah, I suppose it is a function of the fact that this is a gun board, but everyone's "survival kit" seems to be centered around the idea that we'll all be out Mad Maxxing around in the post-apocalypse frontier.

99% of the time we'd all be better off with one gun, a few boxes of ammo, and a basement crammed full of bottled water and canned food.

I would just invest in a decent 4 wheel drive and a full tank of gas to get the heck out of dodge when I needed to...

Looks great, but really you'd just need a bulldozer to uncover those protein rich bodies, if you're that hungry....better get to them pretty quick though!

Tee hee....yep, you got that straight. :)

Now that's funny right there!

i vote for a money belt full of krugerrands and the Uzi
(... maybe a MP7 instead.)

...these threads are always a great mix of helpful info
and hilarious commentaries! :)

Have I always been missing something? I think it's strange that people always put "strike anywhere matches" in a waterproof container on their bug-out lists. The mini-bics can be had for $0.99, last a lot longer than matches and work when they're wet. You can buy three of them for what a box of safety matches costs, takes up less space and is an overall better-working option. When I was a smoker I don't think I ever wore out the flint in one or used up the butane. I always gave 'em away, lost 'em, traded 'em, etc. before they stopped working.

I'm not trying to be a wiseguy...is there some specific reason these supermatches are a better option?
