Today I enjoyed the outdoors. I chose to carry......

Well, all I had was a image dump of a bunch of flowers from my bike rides. I wasn’t going to, but this little fella forced my hand.:)

Walking through an open out in the HayMarsh this one sprung up and ran into my leg! He got hung up when he went for the shadows. I thought he might need a hand, but thought better of it and snapped a shot. Too bad it wasn’t better. He’ll be fine.

I heard a snort from the other side of the open and went about my way. No hoof prints on my forehead thanks.;)

And then it rained. Thank God!
It was getting crunchy out.:D

Still have my trusty, and getting slightly rusty, P-32. Time for a Simonize!

Took a drive into the Idaho woods to do some ground squirrel scouting and brought my 10/22 Copper Mica Edition, Found a swell spot overlooking a little colony of them and made a dent...

Driving back home, decided to take the scenic route and surprised a wolf in the road. Hit the brakes and ran after it, but never did see it again. Found it's tracks it left when it spun on it's heels and leapt into the brush. Used my G29 for comparison:

There were a few of them apparently because when I looked around, I found some very fresh piles of scat:

First truly beautiful day in the woods I've been able to enjoy. Went deep in the mountains and enjoyed the solitude.

Not sure how far I was from @Mars5l this week. Sure is dry in FL as it is in SC.
Enjoyed a few hikes and saw lots of wildlife in the West Palm Beach County parks.

I still wonder what these guys taste like. Some people say they taste like chicken. I think they probably taste like iguana. My 442 was in my pocket. My S&W Victory 22lr would be a better choice .

Clouds made this morning's sunrise a little different.

Went for a walk south of town today. We had a fire there last month and I thought I'd go see what it uncovered. IMG_20210529_123708458.jpg

Here's an Ancestral Puebloan ruin. This is what they look like in the wild.

A small waterfall. I'm glad to see this much water.

Another ruin. This one hadn't had all the lovin' the first one had.
IMG_20210529_123621380.jpg
I thought this was a neat picture because there is Prickly Pear, Barrel Cactus, Yucca, and, down in the lower left, some Cholla. And my Glock 29 for scale.

My Black Widow amongst some chipped stone debris and pottery sherds.

Just for fun, here's a modern multi tool next to a prehistoric one.

I had to channel my inner Indiana Jones at this point.

It was fun. The fire didn't seem to burn much. We've had a little rain and it looked like some vegetation was starting to come back. Hopefully there will be enough ground cover to protect the stream when the monsoons hit. Some of the cactus was starting to bloom. Maybe I can go out next week and get some pics of blossoms. And maybe a different gun.

Did a 25 mile ride on ATVs in the Idaho mountains today. I brought my G29, my brother brought his G20 and an AR-10. Dad brought his Hellcat and a Marlin 1894 in .44 Magnum.

It was wolf season, and we found some fresh sign, but only animal we saw all day was a yearling moose.

Woods are incredibly dry for this time of year. This area is usually still snowed in until July. This is the only snow we found...

IMG_20210601_123445872_HDR.jpg

I fear this is going to be a bad, bad year for wildfires. Unfortunately, the last big one around here was started by yahoos shooting tannerite in the woods in July. Idiots.

I love the burrito heater. I have a spot on the engine block of my 9100 international semi where I can lay my breakfast burrito. 1½hr drive to the Ohio River terminal, and I have a hot breakfast when I get there. I have a spot on my tractor for heating foil wrapped sandwich or dogs. Its silly, but enjoyable to have a hot meal. Kinda like camping, I guess.

This pic was from a few weeks back. I have told y'all that I rarely go anywhere without my lcp. IMG_20210424_180046.jpg

And here it is clipped to my hunting bibs by the techniclip. IMG_20210420_161404.jpg
Aaaaaand the there was the day I slogged about ¼mile through the mud and knee deep water to shoot these beautiful rainbow trout with my bow. I had my lcp clipped into the waistband of my waders. IMG_20210519_141804.jpg

Since Armored Farmer replied with a story, I will too. And to keep this gun related, The State of MN prohibited me from carrying OTJ.

Wrapped some Polish (sausages) in foil and wired them to my trail groomer's engine exhaust manifold. (a Cummins in line six 168 H.P. IIRC) 5 hours later, half way through my night shift at my turnaround point, Lunchtime!
Boy, cased meat sawdust never tasted so good!

You're funny!!!

We’ve had some fun picture threads lately that have remained mercifully free of bickering or controversy. Let’s keep the good vibes rolling.

I’m hoping this will become a long running thread capturing pictures of some of our favorite outdoor load outs.

Every post must include a mention and/or picture of the gun you carried in the great outdoors that particular outing. This isn’t a general non-firearm gear thread as that’s outside the scope of THR. But if other gear is in the pictures, no problem. BUT THERE HAS TO BE A GUN, or we’ll get shut down. Also, let’s not debate or disparage anyone’s choices. This isn’t the thread to debate the effectiveness of bear spray.

Tell us what you carried, your ammo choice if you like, and maybe the purpose of the outing and load out choice.

I was off work today and had some time to go out for a nice hike. I took my time and enjoyed it. I saw some deer a smooth green snake, a marmot, and all kinds of birds. Weather was great.

Mountain lions are the biggest predator here so I carried a Sig Sauer P220 chambered in 10mm auto. It was loaded with Underwood Ammo 140 gr Extreme Penetrators. The bullets are made by Lehigh but the cartridges are loaded by Underwood.

Normally I am trucking along but I was under a doctor’s orders to keep my heart rate low. So I had time for a few pictures in the woods.

I also carried a WE Knife Co. Chimera knife. It’s a 3.9” S35VN bladed flipper knife. Very handy and very comfortable to use.

And finally I also was using a 48” Rowan Tree walking stick. Rowan is also known as mountain ash. It was made by a man in Ireland and makes for a nice hiking stick.

All in all it was a very peaceful time. I saw no one and just listened to some relaxing music on a single ear bud. Couldn’t have been much better.

So what did you carry into the outdoors today?
Good pics.

Well my outing was a bit different. It was to a LGS to pick up my latest.

It was like this; I wasn’t sitting on the fence to buy this new Wilson EDC X 9, I was just reaching for the post to climb up. But JR24’s thread last week about his Wilson EDC
just pushed me up and over the fence!

I’m not crazy enough to go the range on a weekend here in Redneck land where lockdown is a total joke. But I hope to shoot it during the week at least before the credit
card bill arrives. That way it may not sting so hard.

Idaho,on the bucket list!

The only thing I like about the heat of summer.... is getting away from it. Fortunately, summer also means the snow pack in the higher mountain areas melts off, and they become more easily accessible.

So we went for a ramble through some of the flatter mountain forests and just enjoyed being out and away from everything.

The first wet meadow had an adjacent stream, so we followed that up towards the source.

Finally we looped around and reached the pond I knew was up there.

IMG_20210612_182652227_HDR.jpg
IMG_20210612_183904002_HDR.jpg

The mosquitoes were too thick to stay still long, so we headed back down a more direct route. It was a fight to get through a good amount of blow down, but we got a nice view before rejoining a second meadow adjacent to the first. Unfortunately, the picture doesn't do it justice.

IMG_20210612_185430232_HDR.jpg

Once we got back to the first meadow, we saw a large moose hanging out between a few trees in middle of it about 100 yards away. But my wife was too worried about the dogs to want to sneak up for a better view. So no picture of that guy, who ran off when we made some noise.

I was packing these:
IMG_20210612_182206292.jpg

A .41 Mag Blackhawk with a 225gr handload. And the new G33 with a Federal HST in the pipe, and a FMJ-FN handload filling the magazine.

The whole adventure ended up being about 4.25 miles and all between 9,000-10,000' elevation. But we took our time, so we were out just over 4 hours. I had the GPS on, but didn't look at until we got back to the vehicle. I like to avoid relying on it, and improve my land reading and navigating skills. A good day!
