Today I enjoyed the outdoors. I chose to carry......

Ugly Sauce
If I don't have a sidearm on me, no matter what rifle or shotgun I have, I feel totally naked, I mean, actually literally uncomfortable. But I also feel a sidearm is a valuable survival tool, and leaving it home would be like leaving matches or a lighter, or any means of making fire at home. Generally speaking, I'll carry a small caliber pistol if I have a large-game or dangerous critter capable rifle or shotgun, or a .22 rifle, spear or bow if I have my .44mag or .45 Colt pistol.

No encounters with wolves or coyotes back when I use to go hunting with my friends from work, but there was an ongoing problem with packs of feral dogs that hung around the open dump ground that was in the area where we would hunt at. Saw them a couple of times when we were out there but they tended to keep their distance with people being around.

Typically I carried a 12 gauge pump shotgun but like you I felt taking along my little Beretta Model 70S was always a good idea. Carried it in an Uncle Mike's nylon holster, underneath my hunting jacket, and took great comfort in having it with me!

Sometimes the side-arm is hard to explain, to some people, when you have the 12gauge, or .75" Musket, or whatever. Another way I look at is the "I'd rather have it and never need it, then need it and not have it" thing. Without a pistol, like Night Rider, I'd feel like I was two miles from the truck, and couldn't remember if I locked it or not...all day. !!! :) I'd have to walk back, drive home, and get my pistol.

Yep, we are crawling with wolves now up North where I like to hunt and wander. As I usually carry a muzzle loader, the pistol could come in very handy should I be charged in the middle of reloading. !! They are getting bolder too. When first "re-introduced" I never saw them, just tracks and a fresh kill one time. Now I've sighted them twice, and even called two in when calling cougars one day. And yes, they can be incredibly huge.
I live in NE California. I doubt there is a wolf around here that has ever been hunted, at least legally. So other than instinct, they have no reason to fear man.

I heard of a couple of kids that called in 4 while calling coyotes recently.

Right, in NE Washington State, can't hunt them, so they never have been. The game dept. has eliminated a couple whole packs that developed a taste for cattle. I don't know why they didn't just open a season on them, and sell some tags, instead of gunning them down from a helicopter. I don't agree with the "re-introduction", but I find that pretty gross.

Anyhow, this was last spring or summer before last, I forget, but I enjoyed a day in the great outdoors and chose to carry my Rossi Carbine in .357. Can't remember my sidearm of choice that day, but I know there was one!

I did some research after my wolf sighting. One of the articles I read compared Washington to your neighbors to the south.

Trust me, you are blessed!!! Oregon is working on “non-lethal” ways to prevent wolves for harming livestock. Good luck with that!!!

I recall that they need 7 breeding pairs/packs for 3 consecutive years to develop a “Wolf Management Plan.”

Your southern neighbors have determined they have 3 “zones” so that could have 20 breeding pairs/packs on their eastern side but until they get 7 on their north coast and 7 on their southern coast, they can’t manage them.

I don’t remember the specifics of Washington, but it was far better!

Spent the week in Bradenton Beach. Watched a couple of sunsets, but didn't spend anytime on the beach. I was hoping to make it to the Everglades, but that didn't happen do to helping family and friends in the area. I will say that we did make a few hikes at the Preserves of Manatee County.

My carry was my 442 loaded with 125 grain XTP +p. I love this handy little revolver.

I hope you all get out this weekend and enjoy the outdoors. Remember to share those pictures.....

I don't know why I didn't take any pics of shooting it....but thus is my new (to me) .38spl model 10.

How did I miss that some idiot bubba'd his ss# across it with a dremel!?....my bad.
Oh well. It's okay. This one's just a shooter/truck gun. I got a bargain on it from GB and now I know why!
On the bright side, I was putting holes in the oil filter target with ease. One after the other...
6 o'clock hold delivers the goods!.

I love those things. Perhaps a way to fix the SS#?

With almost 60 pages in this thread, I finally decided to join in - several pics from my summer vacation at the Black Sea coast. As you can probably tell from the pics, I concluded that the beach was just too much fun for me and instead rushed to the near mountain, leaving my wife and son to fully appreciate the wonders of the (ridiculously hot) summer without my plebeian interference. I can assure you, that wet wading all day long in the crystal clear river and the cool shades from the trees are just a lame substitute for the marvelous joys of high humidity, the burning Sun and the hot sand, entering even your most private places, but I still managed to enjoy somehow a week without even setting my foot to the beach...

Carried my trusty old butt ugly Mk III Hi-Power and a petite Brusletto Balder attached to my fishing vest - a perfectly adequate setup, as the bears in Europe are with somewhat better manners than their North American relatives...

Thank you sir for the photos. I lived in Timberland RV resort for several months at end of 2018 and beginning of 2019. It is an awesome area.

Great post.
Did you catch fish? What kind?
I'm glad you decided to post....keep it up.

Great post.
Did you catch fish? What kind?
Thank you! This is the middle course of the river and the target fish was European (Common) Chub. While not as beautiful as trout, it's a fish I quite enjoy catching on artificial lures - it's not that aggressive, but it's a good fighter with strong first bite, very easily spooked and with excellent vision. All that makes for a rather difficult fishing, especially in smaller rivers like this one in the summer low waters - you need to hide well and make long and precise casts with UL tackle, usually in hard to reach spots as fallen trees or just at the opposite bank, if you want to catch a bigger one. I can say that some times I enjoy chub fishing more than trout - it really pushes you to show your best as a fisherman.

Ha, that Hi-Power is way more pretty than any polymer pistol. I too, will take the mountains over any beach, anytime.

Last summer (I think) exploring up the headwaters or source of one of my favorite cricks/streams in the mountains. LeClerc Crick. With the Rossi .357, and my sidearm of choice was the S&W AirLite in .22LR. Nice light combo for long-range hiking. Came face-to-face with a black bear that day on an old trail. (once a road down to a logging camp back in 1910, now just a game trail) We were each on the other side from each other, behind a big tree down across the trail, so didn't see each other coming. The Rossi jumped up on my shoulder with the sights lined up, but the bear spun around and took off even faster than that! The Rossi was full up with 200 grain hard cast gas-check bullets, and a ton of WW296 behind each one.

About 10 degrees this morning, took a hike before breakfast with the dogs. Felt alone in the world, very peaceful. Carried an RIA compact 1911. Really starting to like this firearm, reliable, accurate, and with the thicker grips much easier to shoot well than other center-fire single stacks that I've put on paper.
Really nice looking '11

I was able to escape yesterday for a day in the woods. A high of 40 degrees predicted, so I thought I'd better take advantage of that. Been in the 20's lately, and a bit lower. State Land near my house again. My weapons of choice: The 1860 Colt, and the 20gauge Savage 219 single shot. Also, the Cold Steel "Bushman" is becoming a favorite trekking/hiking/survival knife. That sucker is tough, holds a razor edge, you can make a spear out of it in a jiffy, and it don't break the bank. Ammo load-out for the Colt was 18 rounds total.
janhk5.jpg
The Savage 20 Gauge. (has a 26" .30WCF barrel too) Ammo load-out was only five Brenekke slugs. It's a fast shooting single shot, the ejector throws the empties into the next county. If one hit you in the face, it would hurt!
janhk6.jpg
My lunch camp and fire. The fire is mostly to continue practicing my fire starting skills with primitive means. Although, a fire is a nice thing to have. But, time consuming just to stop for lunch. I did cook a brat over it, which is beyond delicious. Everything tastes better outdoors! And of course...COFFEE!!!
janhk4.jpg
I was gazing off in this direction, munching on some bear meat, when a BIG coyote walked by. He stopped and stared me down for a long time. I think though, he was looking at the smoke, and didn't really see me. He never got agitated. He was a beauty, (yeah, I know, you guys would have shot him) all fluffy and big and brown and grey. I was downwind of him, so he finally turned around and I'm sure circled around behind me to get a whiff. Poor feller. If he got a good whiff, he's probably dead, and no one will need to shoot him. Then another smaller grey one went by from the other direction, but did not notice me or the smoke.
janhk7.jpg
I had my own little frozen pond at my lunch-spot.
janhk1.jpg
I took this pic on my way back to the road, for my "extraction". The wife drops me off in the morning, and picks me up at dark, so I don't have to leave a truck or the Jeep on the side of the road. Ain't no one's business that I'm prowling the state land! Anyhow, this is one of my favorite hunting spots. Where you see those two trees pretty close together, is a little "bowl" where one can sit, and see quite a ways in many directions. Really an ideal spot for a modern rifle, more so than a ML, but I really like it. The pic is taken from a game trail that passes still within range of my Jeager. Very cool spot.

Thanks for listening!
