Today I enjoyed the outdoors. I chose to carry......

Amazing how neighbors pull together and help each other. Equally amazing is how it brings out the very worst in some people. Mindset of what is mine is mine and what is yours will be mine.
For a short time after 911 it felt like we were all ready to help each other but it didn't last. We are fortunate to live in eastern CT which it pretty rural with some farms and trees. Nothing like the mid-west, west, or south but at least it's not all pavement and packed in like NYC. I imagine if there were a real disaster in a place like NYC it would turn into "Escape From NY" pretty quick.

Agreed. Would certainly be nice in some ways to see the America from that timeframe. Not what caused the change but the results.

Took my new lens out for a test drive. Kinda regretted trying to lug around a camera and lens that weigh as much as a battle rifle.

Nice pictures. When you said you were going to take your DSLR out I was thinking = Heavy! I'm a DSLR guy too. Just don't like looking at a screen or EVF but prefer looking through glass/optical viewfinder = I'm old school.

I took my Para GI Expert this morning. Went a little over two miles. 60 and sunny so far today. Maybe get some rain this evening. There are a lot of turkey in this area, the pictures of the leaves are from them between yesterday morning and this morning on our property maybe 300 yards from the house. Everyone have a good day and stay safe from the storms as I guess another batch might come through. IMG_0849.jpg IMG_0850.jpg IMG_0852.jpg IMG_0854.jpg

Enjoyed a couple of hikes the past couple of days in the Smoky Mountains.
The temperatures have been more summer like than spring

My carry choice is my XDM compact 45acp with 255 hardcast Underwood.
20230405_112343.jpg Excuse the big knee. It's not the one I was born with

Trails are busy with lots of kids on spring break. Charlie's Bunion was loaded with AT hikers.

Awesome photos as usual. Did you change the recoil spring for the 255's?

Of the 4 color options, that one was the second least offensive, and I couldn't find my first choice. So no, not much choice. But man is it comfy!
About 12 years ago I bought a Camel Back for the trail. I hate the ozzy colors, but I agree, a lightweight synthetic pack that's been designed for comfort goes a long way.

Mine has allowed me to see and experince some places other folks will never go. Having three liters of water and just enough survival gear to survive 2 or maybe 3 days in the bush is really nice isn't it?

I try to remind myself too that if I break a leg and SAR is out looking, having a brightly colored pack will help them find me.

Anyway............ I did not go outside today. Got hammered with snow recently and it's miserable out.

It's a Catch 22. I need to exercise to lose weight and I need to lose weight in order to exercise... o_O
Just start small and build slow. Give yourself rests days in between. You will get there.

I have lost 100 lbs in my lifetime, but it took me quite a while with slow steady increases to get there. Now I walk 25 miles a week just to maintain.

Another walk today. High 40s and damp cold at the start with a few rain drops but then some nice sun rays near the end. I chose to carry my S&W CSX in a new 1791 pancake holster. The holster seems good quality and was an overnight break-in. Did a little over 2 miles and didn't see any deer today. We can only buy 10 round mags here in CT and the 10 rounder isn't long enough for three fingers so I took a mag "pinky" extension for a Shield and trimmed it to fix the CSX mag=much better grip. Our Daughter brought our 18 month old Granddaughter over this morning for a few hours. Being a grandparent is the greatest thing ever. I can't imagine losing her in a school or any other shooting.View attachment 1142872 View attachment 1142873 View attachment 1142874 View attachment 1142875
Been curious about the CSX. My primary carry is a Sig P938, and the CSX looks nearly identical.

I would enjoy that. How old is that beer? Do not recall hearing of it when I lived around Maniwoc and Trivets. Of course that was late 99 to end of 08. I did learn to say the names of the two towns correctly.
It is from a small town of New Glarus in Southern Wisconsin. Not sure of gow long they have been brewing. They are concerned a bit of a yuppie beer. I truly prefer Point another small brewery in Central Wisconsin.
They've been brewing since 92, and it's actually the first brewery officially started by a woman, which is pretty cool. Good beer. Their coffee stout is one of the best I've ever had.

Point beer? Yikes, been about 15 years since I've had that. Went to school there, and spent the first 23 or so years of my life in Wisconsin.

As this is about the great outdoors, and guns............. I do typically bring a beer on my hikes. There, now it's related right?

I did not change a thing to run the 255+p hardcast. It has been completely reliable. In fact the XDM has been a great pistol :D

I think it would probably +p+ just as reliably. XDMs are commonly converted to use 45 super with a spring change and converted to 460 Rolland with a few modifications.

Lucky that big black bird was not starving! It's cool to see country that is so different from mine. Never been to Florida.
Turkey vultures are funny birds. They will cruise by super close to you if you are on a high spot or a bluff.

Nearly got knocked off a cliff once by one. Was working, saw a hole in the cliff. Climbed over to look in and a vulture came out at me at warp speed. The chicks were cute. Mom was pissed. No gun, was at work.

That happened to me once! It was real close, hung there in mid-air, it had a good head-wind, and we looked each other in the eye! We don't have many in Washington State, wouldn't want to shoot one, and one would be in a heap of trouble if one did and got caught. A "protected" species. Last time I was in Missouri they were everywhere, it was funny to see so many.

Yep, they will hang there like a kite in the wind and watch you trying to assess your proximity to death. LOL! Graceful birds.

They use updrafts near topographic uplifts to gain altitude. So you run into them on the bluffs frequently.

And correct, no need to shoot at them, even when I got chased a bit. Not about to go Bambi and kill those chicks mother for doing her job.

Thank you.
Might have to find a couple boxes of the 255's

So you went to UWSP?
They have a great Natural Resource program!
Gun related I miss J Fuller Sports on the square. I bought a few rifles from them.
One was a Model 70 classic pre 64 (limited edition) left handed 30-06. Beautiful looking rifle, but I look at function. Never shot better than 2" groups. It was really heavier than a rifle should be, and I never warmed up to the 3 position safety. If I was a collector I would still have it.
Sorry a little off topic. I need to add a model 94 for a walkabout rifle
