Today I enjoyed the outdoors. I chose to carry......

Thanks for sharing the pictures. How heavy is the Ruger ? Great way to get in shape for hunting season.

It's just under 9.1lbs unloaded (with sling). But surprisingly, it carries pretty well. I move it around. Over the shoulder, one hand, two hands, African style with the sling. The GSR is only half a pound or so lighter the way I have it setup.

Yep, carrying a pack full of water, food, binoculars, rangefinder (I was curious), extra clothes, etc, plus a 9lbs rifle up a 45 degree slope at around 8,000' does seem like a good way to get for for hunting season. Actually, that pretty much been my experience with hunting too.

It's been a hot day in the "office". So once the temps cooled off a little this evening, we went for a walk around the local ponds.

I'm not entirely sure if it's smoke from a fire I don't know about that was making the sun red/orange, but it look a little different as it was setting. Maybe more so before the point I took that pic.

Then I spotted a could racks poking up out of the grass. Managed to sneak in to about 20 yards before a head turned.

But then I was made by one of them, and after a brief stand-off of playing statues, I backed off and he stood up.

Eh, they probably knew I was there the whole time, and just didn't care. :D

G22/.357 and the new G33 playing BUG.

Also saw one of the resident Ospreys dive, and later a Great Horned Owl of which we seem to have a few locally. Still nice to see them around though.

Nature walk question?
This thread is very much about enjoying the outdoors and carrying a favorite firearm or tool.
With the pandemic easing I have a question for everyone in their travels.
Last year when much of the country was shut down many of us probably saw more wildlife. I think I saw more venomous snakes than I ever have.
Am I imagine that the snakes and other animals enjoyed the shut down???

I think a tool for snake protection is more important than I would have thought in the past preferably a walking stick.

Your thoughts....
No arguments please just your opinion and thoughts.

What you're describing may be very area-specific. In Colorado, after the first few weeks or so of "stay at home", many of the trails were packed. In fact, a lot of trails were subsequently closed due to this (or so I heard). Which resulted in more people walking off trail for a short distance to then get onto one. So I can imagine wildlife being negatively rather than positively affected in many recreational areas where closures were not enforceable.

It didn't make a difference to me either way. I rarely use trails these day.

To keep this gun related , I will first post my firearm.
A new to me

NIB 1911 Kimber in 45 acp as of October 9th of last year. In a new shoulder holster from my friends at Lobo Gun Leather...
May become my new best friend,,, It shoots great!

This was last Monday, if memory serves me... (Retirement messes with one)

Was up north trying to keep our roads and trails open for hunting seasons.
I gotta pick my days to do this because of the drought and heat and fire danger. It is going to be a long haul...
Do not want to start a wildfire!:(

I saw a doe in two different beaver ponds (obviously not the same pond getting a drink but was not fast enough to get a picture.
Saw a mink and 2 clutches of Grouse with their mamas but again, to slow with the phone... I mean camera, whatever.

A before picture, almost 5 miles from deer camp.
upload_2021-7-13_21-51-13.jpeg

And after, not the same view, but same area, just looking east instead of west.

I am anxiously awaiting Fall as most here are too!!! Love the North Land even though it is is a ugly bue state ( of confusion)

Use care,

I like that 1911, and the leather.
It sounds unlikely, but my 1911s are seeing more and more woods and trail duty.
I would have called Blasphemy on this not long ago.
The thin profile and ease of carrying spare ammo are as handy in the wild as in the the urban world.
My good friend guided elk hunts in the high country of Nevada for several years. He always carried his kimber 1911.

Yup, I normally carry one of these in the North Woods .44 Rem. Mag....

Whoops, upside down

And this S & W .460 has been carried a few times. (just for exercise ) :)

The ease and comfort of carrying that 1911 in a shoulder holster is starting to win me over.

And they think those of us that carry J frame size 357 and K/L size 41 & 44 mags are crazy.... Light weight and easy to carry :D

I got a bee in my pith helmet and got busy on a covid project I started a little over a year ago. I decided I needed some river pebbles to finish a table top water feature. IMG_20210724_133735241.jpg
I figured a river was a good place to look. Here's the upper Dolores. It didn't take long to get what I came for.

Scared up some wildlife. Cute little guy....

Took my K6S.

We're in the midst of our summer monsoon weather pattern. It was nice and cool with a little sprinkles. I was thinking I should have brought a fishing pole.

Spending the week in Panama City Beach.
20210726_165216.jpg 20210727_092704.jpg My carry for the week is my LCP2.
I also carried a 28" made in China plastic shovel I found on the beach.
20210727_174541.jpg

I find it really sad when my wife and I spend much of our time picking up trash on the beach while thousands of visitors just don't care and don't clean up after themselves and maybe a little more.

I'll ask the next snake I see. :)

Honestly I would be willing to bet that there were fewer vehicular animal collisions world wide last year, but probably more encounters by hikers and such. But typically hikers are not killing animals if it can be helped.

Regarding the walking stick, I encountered a rattler last year that was pissed at me but not showing itself. The stick I carried allowed me to test rocks to see where it was. I carry a stick on and off the clock now in the woods. they are too useful not to.

Went huckleberry picking today and was amazed at how good the berries were. Hundreds of forest fires in Idaho have kept the woods closed all summer. My favorite spot just opened back up and the bushes were full of nice sized berries.

Mountains still smoky, but I was coming in from the West, and most of the smoke is blowing to the East.

IMG_20210802_130008193_HDR.jpg

Climbed a fire lookout tower and looking to the East, the smoke is pretty bad. Usually, you can see about 20 miles from here.

IMG_20210802_154515605_HDR.jpg

Carried my usual woods gun; a Glock G29 with Dawson sights, KKM 5.5" barrel, and 15-round magazine.

Kinda pic heavy post. Final day off for a 4 day weekend, went to a large wilderness preserve I haven't been to since last year. I guess I picked the wrong day to go finally since it was constant scattered thunderstorms all day long. There was an older gentleman that arrived with me and he looked more prepared to be out for an overnight hike than I just set for a few hours. There was a loud storm approaching and he just went off. I took off a bit after him i got about 3/4 miles in and said nah. Im not getting struck by lighting, tried to high tail it back to my car but didn't make it. I was drenched and the lighting was close. I waited it out and changed clothes. Finally let up and got back to it but it didn't last long, no cell signal so couldn't even check the weather. But got lucky with no real rain, but you could hear the thunder close by. Did make for some nice views though wish my phone took better photos. I like this area because there actual hills and elevation changes, nothing like you other guys get but it's considerable by Florida standards.Brought my trusty P365, though this time with 2 spare mags because its rather empty and remote for me, and its quite vast. Part of the Florida Trail runs thru which I was on for a bit

Last week I took the scenic route to a friend's place a few hours away. I headed west through Utah, turned at Moab, and followed the Colorado River back east. I believe this is Jackass Canyon.
IMG_20210727_151318256.jpg

The water is really low. Even so, it seemed fairly crowded.

Because my Taurus hasn't been out much, I took it along.
IMG_20210727_151412514.jpg

I intended on taking more pictures, but I was getting pressed for time and didn't stop much on my way out. Unfortunately, my phone fell out of my pocket and ended up between some couch cushions and wasn't with me on the return trip. I managed to track the phone down and have it shipped back. Hopefully, I'll get to post more pictures after another trip.

@Trey Veston That's a neat looking G29. Even with the after market components, it doesn't look much like my Gen 3. Tell more please.

It's just a Gen 4 G29 with a KKM barrel, X-Grip adapter to allow use of G20 15-round mags, Dawson sights, and a camo job I applied to the slide for fun. All the internals and important parts are stock, except for the barrel. I run it because I shoot hard cast 200 grain bullets in it and wanted a little extra oomph.

It started out very boring...

Went hiking in the Shenandoah National Park yesterday.
Carried my Taurus 605 357 mag. 20210804_144402.jpg

Saw this doe with 4 fawns.
20210803_123458.jpg
Did not see a second doe. The fawns all followed her.

Skyline Drive has great vistas.
20210803_131252.jpg

Enjoyed a nice hike.

We stopped by a small Falls for a break and I accidentally stepped into a bees nest in a old rotten tree. I got stung by at least a dozen bees. I got away from the nest and kicked of my hiking boots to step into the stream.
I then started the 2 1/2 mile hike back to the car. I had a bad reaction with 90% of my body covered by hives. In 1985 I had a bad reaction from a wasp sting requiring a EpiPen. I was lucky this time! A few more stings may have required a EpiPen this time.

I will be carrying a EpiPen in the future. It is more likely to be need than a firearm.

I hiked the A.T. Thursday (well a little piece of it)
20210805_134919.jpg

It was good to get back on the trails after my battle with the bees Tuesday.
20210805_161100.jpg 20210805_160742.jpg

My carry choice for the week is my Taurus 605 357. At 24 oz. It is heavy enough to take some of the sting out of the 357 loads, but easy to throw in your pocket.
Worth a look for an inexpensive option.
