I picked up my pistol permit from the NYPD this morning. It only took 10 months! <sarcasm> I almost had to laugh at this however since I find this contradictory.

After 10 months of filings, fingerprints, interviews, etc. Along with $374 dollars, I received my permit. I sit down with one of the investigators to sign recept of said permit. I am supposed to receive a booklet with NYC hangun laws. Sorry, no more left. I have a 30 day window to purchase my firearm. If I do not purchase a firearm in this time, my permit will be revoked. I have to bring the purchased firearm from the dealer within 72 hours from purchase to NYPDHQ for "inspection". Now the type of permit I have is referred to as a "premise permit". I am not allowed to carry the firearm unless going to or coming from a pre approved list of ranges. Wouldn't I be carrying a firearm illegally to the police station? I know I am being nitpicky but it just seems very backwards with them. Now I already purchased the gun. What is the NYPD going to say, it's no good? Bring it back? And I have to take off another day of work to bring the gun to NYPD HQ for them to inspect. This is my third day off for this. And I have to bring them another picture of me. I mentioned I gave them 4 when only two was required. Her response was "we need another one"

It has been a long road but I feel fortunate. Now I can start training.

I would imagine the last picture needed by the NYPD would be one of "grabbing ankles" :fire:

Oh YES!!!

That sounds VERY familiar to me! :cuss: :cuss: :cuss: :fire: :banghead: :barf:

Congratulations for your victory over the $§%&{#* bureaucracy, compadre! :)

Lemme get this straight. You cannot conceal carry your weapon any time UNLESS your going to the pre approved list of ranges?

What the heck, that sucks bigtime. If your going thru all that hassle why cant you carry all the time.

Well at least you can protect yourself on the way back and forth to the range. :banghead:

AS far as concealed carry goes

....it is near impossible. Unless you are in a rock band (Aerosmith) or are a celebrity (Deniro received his in a week I hear). Concealed carry is a phrase not often heard in these parts. And get this. If I stop for say a container of milk and so happen to get made by PD. I lose my permit. It states "you must go to and from the range with no stops between."

Guess I won't be needing a holster:mad:

All in all I am really looking forward to this. A nearby shop has been terrific with instructions throughout this process and a club I joined nearby has unlimited training. The range is open from 1 pm to 1 am. They only ask if you plan on being their till 1 am to let the RO know in advance.

Neither here nor their. My next goal is to convert somebody like myself. A friend has his permit for over ten years. He took me to his brothers house upstate to go shooting. I have been hooked ever since. One step at a time.....

Also this has to be one of the best sources of information I have found on the internet. Your personal experiences help a new guy like me become better informed. Thank you.

I don't think you can carry concealed AT ALL....just like Maryland isn't it? Locked in the trunk only, with ammo locked separately?

Spot,

I am unfamiliar with the MD laws but I always believed firearm and ammo were in separate containers. Even the mags must be unloaded when travelling. Then the shopowner was telling me I can travel loaded only to and from range in case anyone was able to follow where I was coming from to steal my weapon from me ( like carjacking). I am assuming it is locked and unloaded when travelling. It sounds starnge to me and until I can cinfirm otherwise, I will travel as said. My friend has a range bag with all of his mags and ammo, hearing glasses etc. Then he has a pistol pouch for his gun and a trigger lock on the weapon. I will travel the same.

Hang in there and when you get everything squared away get to the range and get plenty of practice.Good Luck!!!

Preacherman,

Thanks for checking in. I have a 30 day window starting today. I probably have to factor in the Brady bill and wait ten days so really 20 days.

I am looking at a 9 mm semiauto for a number of reasons:
1) ammo is cheap so I can practice without burning my budget.
2) recoil is negligible so flinching will be a minimum. Hard to say with the limited shooting experience I have.
3) I have small hands. I need to handle a few to make sure my grip is big enough to control the weapon.

Here is what I plan to look at:
Sig 226/228
CZ 75/PCR/P01
P99
92FS (worried about grip size here)
Glock G19

I really like those compact 9's like the 228 or the PCR. I really don't need a compact as I am not carrying here but from aesthetics I like the way they look. We'll see how they feel. The Mrs. also factors into this as I want her to get familiar with a handgun as well. If she wants to pursue, we can get her a permit later.

I like the fact that some offer .22 conversion kits. I am really considering that in my purchase also. Not all listed have that available.

Some of you are probably wondering why I don't get a good .22 or a nice revolver first and then the semi auto. If I want to purchase another firearm, I need to complete a form and submit to the NYPD. They will let me know when I can go purchase another. I don't know what kind of turnaround that takes or when they will pass another law limiting what I can own. I figure I need to strike while the iron is hot.

Of those choices, I would go with the CZ because they make a nice .22 conversion for it. That way you could get two guns - sort of.

The number of people who are surprised pistol purchase permits disturbs me....

The number of people who are surprised at pistol purchase permits disturbs me....

Some of ya'll sound shocked, like this is news.

Folks, listen up, and listen good:

There are now, and have been since 1966, many places in the US of A in which citizens MAY NOT PURCHASE FIREARMS WITHOUT THE EXPLICIT PERMISSION OF THE STATE.

Sheeesh. The fact that I have to outline this ugly fact on this board......:banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

And Now...

No buses, subways. People walking home from work. A night without power possible.

I hope that you made your purchase already - you may need it.

Truly sorry.

-Andy
