i thought the 178amax /175 match would drop more at 41grs of powder imr 4064 the 168 match was 41.5 grs btw ok i was 2 to 3 clicks high and to the right you see i adjusted after the shoot
In seriousness. Heavier weight bullets seem to stabilize better because they're longer, and when they're spinning that's more weight that's adding to the spin.
With my loads in my rifles there is only 2-3" difference in trajectory between those bullet weights at 500 yards. I use a ballistics program and print out cheat sheets. I only calculated to 500 yards and I'm not using the exact bullets or powder. When you consider a 6" group is good at 600 yards 2-3" more drop isn't noticeable.
But the point is that up to a certain point the better BC of heavier bullets offsets the slower starting speeds. The heavier bullet is impacting a little faster downrange even though it started slower. Around 175-180 gr is where you reach the point of diminishing returns though. If you have some pretty hot loads with long barrels you might be able to use some 200 gr bullets. But those really need 300 mag cases to get enough muzzle velocity.
