I had taken the course before about 1.5yrs ago.
But wanted to take it again at a shop that has a shooting team.
A gentleman who oooozed years of experience and a gunsmith by trade gave me my private lesson. He also shoots in competition as well.
We went over all the basic rules I've heard before but paid attention to again.
A few things stand out from my class:
1) The slide stop is just that- a slide stop. It is NOT a slide release and it is not good to press down to release the slide.
2) I finally learned a proper grip and it feels good.
3) He emphasized staying focused on the front sight and a smooth trigger pull.
Furthermore, he had me pull the trigger and HOLD it back until I reacquired the proper sight picture then in one smooth motion release and pull slow and smooth.
Repeat.
OK the guns...
I shot the LNIB CZ P-01 I picked up this morning the most.
VERY natural feeling. Solid sights. Trigger pull is a tad long, but I was fine with it.
Initially, I mentioned I couldn't see how I was shooting to adjust.
He told me the paper was just there to catch the bullet. It didn't matter where I hit.
Just focus on lining up the front sight picture and being nice and smooth on the trigger.
We ran all four magazines through the CZ P-01 2x10's and 2x14's.
I only ran 2 magazines through the 229 with the .357 barrel.
He shot very well with it. I did better than I'd thought.
The .357 recoil/sound/muzzle flash wasn't nearly as big/bad/impressive as I thought it would be reading about it.
It was neat to stand to his side and see the muzzle flash though.
I was a bit fatigued by the time I shot the 229 and it showed.
The P-01 feels more natural in my hands from a grip/pointing standpoint.
I actually measured the grips of the P-01 and 229 with a tape measure. Just mm's difference slimmer on the P01 makes a difference.
Of course, it being .357 and not 9mm will make it tougher to tame as well.
Still, I'll probably go through the .357 ammo I have then sell it and get the .22 KADET adapter kit for the P-01.
Now- I happen to have a 239 coming in next week as it fit my hands better than the 229 does. Unfortunately, it's 40S&W and not 9mm. But I'll be able to see if the 239 feels as nice or better to me than the CZ P-01.
I have 3 16 rd magazines on order from Midway for the P01 too.
BTW, if you are in the Orlando area I was at East Orange Shooting Sports in Winter Park.
If you are lurking and a newbie call 407-679-1995 to set up a private class with Dick DiVittorio.
I forgot to mention he suggested going around the paper target shooting at the numbers going clockwise instead of the "X". The readjusting while doing that will garner better practice results. I can shoot the X at the end of practice- not the beginning.
Have a great weekend folks!
Happy shooting and stay safe.

Dean
