Some of my jobs over 26 years with the state required wearing of vest and I highly recommend you practice/get used to moving around while wearing one, especially shooting pistol and carbine/rifle.

Practice magazine changes and operating equipment like cellphone.
Thanks very much for both the link and the advice. :)

And don't be surprised if I throw some questions at you down the road. :)

Get some m193 ammo, and set up 2 targets at 25 to 50 yards. Sight in on one target. Once you are zeroed take your first range sessions alternating between targets. Head shot 1 then head shot 2. Center mass shots 2 a piece to each target. Start with only 1 or 2 rounds in your first magazine, etc. Work on accuracy first, speed second. Mix it up.

Do this for 5 range trips. Learn to use the weapon you have before you add a bunch of doo-dads.

You can do a lot for yourself with simple practice without spending a lot on stuff you don't need.

I had a lot of the same questions you did on my first AR, and no single accessory is better than practice and repetition.

Thanks for your thoughts. :)

I was not concerned about ricochet per se, it entered my mind when it was suggested here to have the gun pointing downward while moving around in case of accidental discharge -- I have a lot of tile flooring and the house is built on a slab.

I could not find any HP, I got Gold Dot which is a soft point with excellent expansion, I don't think I have to worry about over-penetration with it.

In one of my posts upthread I explained my rationale for not wanting to use a handgun caliber.

That said, I am interested to know the logistics of how you guys manage the backup handguns you mentioned. I would love to have one or two handguns with me but I can't see putting on my carry setup, I'm already gonna be putting on muffs... ? I do have one idea in mind that I think is workable but I'd like to hear what you guys do.
I'm not going to rag on the gold dots, but I'll say that I have recommended them to several friends specifically because they DO over penetrate and the friends have less of a concern about neighbors and more of putting holes in the barriers the potential threats would use for cover, in my opinion (gathered from testing lots of bullets) it'll be hard to find a tougher bullet without going to a Barnes. They're great at their purpose but you should have a good understanding of their design purpose. Something fun to play with during range time, alternate a 2x4 with a water jug for about 6 water jugs, see if the 6th jug can catch a gold dot for ya ;).

Performance may be different with a longer barrel. The Gold Dots are actually designed for shorter barrels. You can see a test of the 55 grain with ballistic gel (and other stuff) out of a 7.5" at .

You have been warned by everyone before you bought your AR that they tend to multiply, especially replicate in the gun safe ... :D
When I bought my first gun (a 4" 686 Plus), I said I'm only getting one gun and this is it, I don't understand why people accumulate them. Hahaha.

Actually I think my next purchase might be a semi-auto handgun, my fingers are not getting stronger with increasing age, if I'm not gonna be able to shoot my revolvers one-handed DA it might be necessary. I've been using the finger-exerciser thing every night, waiting to see how next range visit goes.

That actually demonstrated quite well what I was attempting to explain lol thank you! Of course, shorter barrel is less velocity and momentum, but also means less expansion.

I thought the expansion in the video was excellent.
The expansion was good, but compared to what i look for in a bullet at close range, it was not my personal favorite, a fellow did some testing at ar15.com that illustrates a few options closer to my happy zone, the Barnes bullets and your gold dots make for good barrier bullets, but I prefer other softer options for general purpose loads (including bumps in the night, if the first mag of splodey bullets doesn't do it, the 2nd mag of Barnes types will make sure the couch isn't used for cover), from ar15.com:

Ultimately the bullet choice topic is being well covered on a couple other threads right now, but I entertain not 1 hopeful do-all, instead 2 different purpose bullets that cover the 2 largest concerns I have for my home, overpenetrating after a solid hit, and not penetrating enough. I like the gold dots but I'd still recommend playing at the range with several types of ammo on several types of media just to be sure that you have a good picture of what you're asking of your bullet and if it performs as YOU expect it to under the conditions YOU seem relevant.

Thanks and I will check out that link.

Right now many rounds are just not available. To get the Gold Dots I had to go to the Speer website. If and when we get back to normal availability experimenting would indeed be very interesting.
