One of the main reasons I bought an AK was for its size and ease of portability. I have a WASR10, but am now second guessing my purchase. I really like the underfold of the M70.

I think I could be equally pleased with the side fold stock available for WASR's, but have heard they are not good. Do any of you have experience with the Tapco side fold stocks?

Also, is there any other feature of the M70 that would make it worth my time to try and sell the WASR?

Thanks guys!

The Yugo M70ab2 is built on a 1.6mm receiver as opposed to a 1mm, also the fit and finish is better. Wrap some para cord around the left side of the stock for a nicer feel on your cheek (plus if the rifle is out in the sun, you won't burn yourself). The M70 is by far the better of the two AKs.

another feature of the M70 is that it will cost you much more...get several types of folding stocks for the WASR

No experience with the Tapco models, but I have used a Romanian wire folder and liked it. It is spartan, though.

You should avoid the Tapco side folder completely. I broke mine the first day I had it. My kids have plastic to trucks build out of MUCH sturdier stuff than the hinge mechanism of that stock.

If you can live with the wire Tantal style side folders, they are built strongly and work fine. Not very comfortable to shoot with as the cheek weld is quite poor, but they are built to be fairly "soldier proof" so at least they won't break.

Thanks all for your replies!

Here's a couple of other questions.

A. Can you put an underfold stock on a WASR 10

B. Where can you buy side fold stocks?

The underfolder that comes on the WASR pins through the receiver and the back of the receiver is closed...it is open for the wooden stock to fit into it. In other words, the receivers are different between an underfolder WASR and a wood stock WASR...try to swap either way and you have gaping holes left over.

Yugo M70s are better guns, but underfolders suck to shoot. You can find sidefolders for sale on forums like arfcom.

As a practical matter, you can't retrofit an underfolder onto a gun that did not originally have one, WASR or otherwise. The rear end of the receiver and the rear trunnion are significantly different.

What is the problem with shooting underfolders? I've read that complaint a few times.

They just don't give a good cheek weld. Also, they are more likely to get loose and wobbly over time than sidefolders.

If you're considering buying one, I would definitely try to find someone who already has one who will let you try it out at the range. Failing that, at least try shouldering one at a gun shop. You may find that it's not a big deal, or you may discover that you really don't like them.

The M70 is a considerably nicer AK. The trigger feels better, the pull of the action to chamber the round is much smoother, and the accuracy is better...and this is coming from someone whose roommate has a WASR and who has fired probably over 1,000 rounds from one.

I find that you are offset to the side with underfolders so you have to almost force yourself over to get your eye behind the rear sight. Which is doable but uncomfortable and unergonomic.

Definitely. M70's are great AK's. Great barrels, great receivers and the best underfolding stock made. Their only downside is that they use nonstandard parts.

WASR's are bottom of the barrel and there are probably millions of them out there. Even if you pay double for the M70, you'll get it back and more when you go to sell it.

I don't have any problem shooting my Yugo underfolder. People make way too much out of it. Every type of rifle requires a different hold/cheek weld. My AKs have a different feel than my ARs, which have a different feel than my M1A, or M1, or bolt guns, etc, etc, etc. Its just a matter of getting used to it. I'd trade a WASR for a Yugo in a New York minute.

If you can trade up go for it. I have a Wasr underfolder, and fit and finish is ok. I had a polish, but traded it and ended up getting the Wasr because I missed having an underfolder. You could convert your wasr to an underfolder, but there would be no going back, would cost at least $150 in parts, and thats if you can find an underfolder trunion, and if you do it wrong you could ruin your gun!

I'm a "buy and hold" kind of a guy.

I'd save my sheckels and buy the M70 outright. If you still want to sell the WASR after that, go for it. You'll definitely get more money selling the WASR than trade should you decide to.

I agree... cheek weld is not an issue at all for me. For a steel arm with a steel buttplate, the M70AB2 folding stock is surprisingly comfortable. In my opinion the M70 is in a significantly higher class of AK than any WASR I have seen.
