I've got a buddy who I shoot with who helped me out with a bunch of drywall last week, but won't take money for it. He just moved from MD to VA and has been talking about getting some 30-round mags for his AR-15, but hasn't gotten around to it.

I figured getting him some would be a good thanks for the drywall, but I guess I can't get them here in MD (I'm a resident). If I go visit him, can I stop at a shop down there and buy some and then just give them to him? I can't imagine getting carded for magazines, but I don't really know anything about it.

IANAL but...

Everyone I know here in MD who owns EBRs buys mags out of state. The language of the state AWB doesn't seem to cover purchases made in VA, PA, etc, but I wouldn't put it past an ambitious prosecutor to attempt to stretch the law. Buy out of state at your own risk. In your case, however, the magazines will be purchased in VA and will stay in VA. Prosecutors may like to play fast and loose with the law, but it looks like you're pretty safe being that the mags will never enter or change hands in MD.

Of course, if a local friend asks you to pick up a few mags for him while you're in VA you're being solicited to commit a crime.

Thanks, American By Blood, I think I get it. They won't be leaving VA (at least not with me). Just wanted to be sure I wouldn't be embarrased and turned away at the shop. Thanks again.

I don't know how it works out there, but in Reno and Las Vegas gunshops, they usualy card anyone asking to buy magazines, because of the vicinity to California. In other words, they follow CA law when dealing with CA residents, even though the CA law does not extend past the state's borders.

you could order some from an online place and have them delivered to him, 44mag.com had some great prices and service last time i ordered from him.
