True Grit problem

The amount (7 inches) is probably correct; it's the dimension that's wrong - it should be circumference, not height.:D

It's not an illusion. People today are taller....It's due to nutrition, good or bad....but diet can cause children to grow taller.

The Japanese since the 2nd world war are much taller. A few years ago I saw a study that showed children from the same mother and father grown in different countries.

The two countries were Mexico and well North of the border. The children raised in the US were much, much taller.

There were so many makes of revolvers in the olden days that they were referred to as "Colt's revolvers" as opposed to our modern language of calling them a Colt Revolver. I think the inventor was given more credit in those days.

My theory was if you look at all of Colt's advertising of that era they were sold as "Colt's Patent Firearms" So i figured that may be why they called the Colt's xxxx. Not saying Im right or you're wrong, just thought that made sense to me.

ETA: couldnt find an ad old enough, but here's an old stock certificate.

This. I do believe average heights have changed, but way moreso girths and weights. I am considered a slight build by today's standards. I dive vintage scuba gear, and to find a wetsuit from the 1950s or 1960s that is large enough even for me is rare.

Another thing in the new movie that struck me as funny was when she crossed the river on her horse and the gun was fully submerged,I don't know a lot about BP guns but wouldn't the gun be useless. Another good one is the movie Open Range I'm watching it right now and Kevin Costner and Robert Duvall are in a gunfight,Costner fires 3 or 4 shots then fans off 9 more right away without reloading. I gotta get me one of those revolvers:D

You have to remember that you don't see EVERYTHING in a movie. At some point it got reloded. You didn't see her take a leak either, did you? :banghead:

What year is Open Range maybe it was one of these little

Pretty cool

Will have to see the new one a few more times, but, the common decency that the original displayed along with cold blooded killer was much preferred to the vagabond Bridges portrayed...Did not even clean up to testify in court LOL...

The scene at the dugout is totally made up in Cohen mind has nothing to do with the book, the Ranger was one of the good guys, who roamed the west :D The Ranger won in the end, he took the man back and got the money ;)

I have seen the original many times in fact I watched it again last night (on demand) paid $2.99 to watch without commercial:D

Something else that I thought was better with the newer movie was the dialect between the characters seemed to flow better. I have watched this new one almost 10 times, and I think it keeps getting better.

In the book the Ranger is the one who climbs up on the roof and helps smoke them out. I agree the dugout scene in the new version is not taken from the book.

The rest of your account however is not accurate. The Ranger does take the dead man back to TX but it is never clarified if he got the money. Mattie states she never heard from him again even though she did attempt to write him. IIRC.

PS I finished re-reading the book on Friday.

True about not stating it specific in the book, guess I am as bad as the Cohens:D It has been fun comparing the movies...Reading the book was a good one also...I liked Kim Darby, as Mattie...

She is a character for sure...
She has been married five times, three times to well-known people in Hollywood. Her first marriage was to actor James Stacy (1968-1969). They had one child, Heather. Her second marriage was to B-movie actor James Westmoreland (also known as Rad Fulton) (February to March 1970). Her fourth marriage was the longest, and was to producer William (Bill) Tennant. She was romantically involved with actors John David Carson and Pete Duel. She currently lives in Studio City, California.

I went to Van Nuys High school...

LOL....

The book is one of the most underrated narrivative of the American West. It is a quick and wonderful read. It is on par with Huck Finn in its whit and multi-leveled humor.

I really do recommend those who are fans of the movies to read the book.

I personally liked the Mattie character in the new movie more but that is a matter of personal preference. I think I liked that the new movie plays out as her narriative instead of a 3rd person omniscient. To me the in the new version the young girl shows more "True grit".

Following the Ranger back to Texas and his story would be good... I have enjoyed the whole of it to be honest...I can see why he never got back to Mattie:D

The scenes with Strother Martin were enjoyable, I always liked him as an actor...

Regards

I went to Barnes and Nobles today to find the book and they didn't have any copies. So I bought 3 books on guns and reloading off the bargain shelf. I think I'm going to invest in a Kindle so I can just get the book from Amazon.

Got it for $1.99 on iBooks last week, I will read it after I am done with Beyond Band of Brothers[/I]

Going back to the comment about the number of rounds fired by Costner in the Open Range gunfight scene he was royally ticked at the editors for leaving an important piece of film on the cutting room floor. It was the part where he switched from the 7 1/2" Colt he used to kill the gunfighter to the 5 1/2" he had stuck in his belt. Two guns = 12 shots. I am reasonably sure all chambers would be loaded going into a fight.:) My problem with that gunfight was he could shoot a man in the foot with that Winchester but couldn't hit something as big as the ranch owner with numerous rounds. It's Hollywood. I thought the current True Grit was OK as far as clothes, leather and guns. Much better than a lot of the older stuff including the original True Grit.

I agree. I think we just missed the gun switch. It was such an accurate portrayal in so many ways that things like this people notice. The one that bothered me was when Boss shot through the shed with his 10 gauge, picked up the bad guy and blew him completely across the alley way. I guess the dramatic effect was worth more to them than the actual physics.

It really was one of the best, if not the best, gunfights I've ever seen. One thing that was mentioned that would have been a bit better was all the black powder smoke that should have filled the air. I guess that would have obscured the fight too much...

Shotguns at a close range will move bodies, I recall a shooting years ago (hotel stakeout), susp was shot at about 3 feet, moved him quite a bit, across room, and left his slippers where he was standing:what:

Here we go again!

And how far was the shooter thrown? Because if that shotgun blast had enough power to throw the perp, then the shooter was also thrown in the opposite direction. You can't cheat the laws of physics. The perp probably jumped, and it just appeared to you that he was thrown..

We had a robbery suspect shot during a stakeout in 1977. He was hit with a load of 00 high in the chest. Complete flip and landed 4 feet from his starting point. Boss fired both barrels at the same time. Could have happened that way. Interesting that Charlie walked by the man after Boss shot him and shot him again. This scene was deleted.

John Hunter (I believe it was) wrote about shotguns and hunting wounded lions, tigers soft skinned cats, etc. in the bush, and why he used them, stopped the animal as a rule:uhoh: Lots of surface covered with a full load of shot and eating a hole in target about the size of a baseball...

Lots of stories and nay-sayers around...Not sure about exacts, just know about the slippers, and person not in them, and across room...;)
Regards

PS Junkman...I have a profile where is yours :) There of course, is reaction by individuals reflex, its a given...

Harley I shot at a guy standing in an opening holding an AK. He didn't see me and I had time to get a good sight picture on him. I carried all tracers in my magazines and it looked to me like some of them passed through him.

When I got over to where he had been standing the only thing there was a set of Ho Chi Minh sandals, you know the ones made from old truck tires and inner tubes. No blood, no trail, nothing but the sandals.

I brought the sandals home but the wife made me throw them away a few years ago. Made good shower shoes.
