I am considering buying a second carry gun for backup that is identical to my present favorite carry gun. I do practice with my carry gun frequently and over time something will need to be fixed.

In one way it seems to be a wise decision but then again maybe this is overkill. Just wondering if anyone has two identical carry guns.

I have a Springfield XD-S in .40. First range trip, my wife gave me an ultimatum: get her one, or give her mine. So, for a while, it went well. I had 2 more magazines if I needed them, and we had a spare always in the bedside lockbox. After she tried my M&P, she decided that she liked it better. I just sold the duplicate, the proceeds bought me a new shotgun, and she has my M&P. But, it was a good idea while it lasted.

......one Pina Colada. I'm going to order one when I can find one in stock. I want to do some mods on one and don't want to be without a carry gun in case the mods take longer than expected.

I've owned and carried the same exact models (multiple CZ-75's, multiple BHP's, Glock 19's as well as a G23), but they all had slight differences.

Most often it was just different finishes and different sights. One BHP will have tangent sights and Wehrmacht proof marks, one will be chrome, one will be gloss blue, the next will have Novak sights, a trigger job and a target barrel on it and so on. Same thing with the Glocks and CZ's.

Lots of people buy their pistols in pairs. They'll train and shoot the dog excrement out of one and then carry the other. That way one has less mileage on it.

Never carried them both at the same time though.

Pretty much what I am doing. Long mileage gun stays at home for practice while the newer gun is the carry. I have been thinking about this for a while. Two identical guns expensive but the option seems desirable.

Yes, (mine are) Glock 23's. There is a lot of wisdom in identical carry guns, not the least of which...if one breaks down...BAM! second string fills the holster. However, a Glock is a Glock, and a G43 (subcompact single stack 9mm) is just as easy to shoot.

I don't have a dedicated dry fire gun. But I do have an insanely over the top method of making sure it's empty before I begin dry firing.
All mags stowed.
Lock pistol to rear.
Visual of chamber and through magwell.
Stick pinkie finger in chamber.
Cycle action twice.
Begin dry fire.

Something to consider. That would be the ultimate set up!
Its pretty nice, I put a laser bullet in it with an extension that comes out the barrel so it is easy to tell what it is and that it is unloaded. Configured like that it takes a bit of work to unscrew the extension and eject the laser bullet before it could possibly be loaded by accident.

Laser Ammo. I already have this set up for both 9mm and 45acp. Asking about two. You have bumped it up to three! Pleasant problem.

Used to be more common, when guns wore out more easily, especially aluminum framed ones. Most popularized following things like Cooper referring to the Star PD as a gun to be carried much, shot little. He (and others who agreed it was awesome) had another, or got similar guns like 9mm versions for practice—and a slow week for these guys is hundreds of rounds of shooting in total—then carried the light alloy frame one.

If not a huge nerd/addict and you must have the cool flavor of the day, 100% nothing wrong with two of the same gun, or two very similar ones. I tend to avoid to similar ones that are critically different (e.g. different calibers) because you may mix up magazines to your deadly embarrassment, but one RDS, one not, different stocks, different finishes, etc. are all solid choices. Also gives you a spare not just for catastrophes like theft, or seizure during UOF investigation, but for stuff like sending to the gunsmith for custom work if that is your way. One at a time.

One way or another, when I really like a gun, I wind up with another just like it.
I guess it's a subconscious desire to have one available in the event of breakage.

Um, no ... it's not overkill. Why would you not have an identical carry gun to back up your primary carry? Doesn't everyone carry what they shoot best? What if it's stolen ... lost ... taken by police as evidence if you have to use it ... mechanical issues, breakage ... ? Wouldn't you want a back up the same size, weight, trigger, sights, accuracy and more to the point, the training that you should have put in with your chosen everyday carry handgun?

I have duplicates of my carry pistols. 2 LCPs and 2 EC9S. For my others in my collection I am content with only a single copy of a particular variant.
