I'd go with the high end option personally. I've owned two drama free Kimbers along the way, but my Wilson is a whole lot more gun. For a serious use pistol, I'd prefer a semi-custom gun from a place like Ed Brown, Wilson, Baer, etc., or a Kimber that had been worked over by a 'smith.
I suggest you check out the thread " what is the most unreliable semi auto you have shot"? Posted by SJ78. Unfortunately the name Kimber was listed in several posts, I have no experience with either the Kimber or the Ed Brown, but do own 2 1911's, a Wilson Combat and Springfield Longslide. Buy the custom, at least it will give your friends a case of gun envy.
I"ve shot a few Kimbers (Range rentals so only for a limited time) and they didn't seem to have any problems whatsoever (admittedly during a limited test, but also one was a range gun so that might say something in its favor). Ed Brown, Wilson, Nighthawk, all of these guns have great reps, but you're forgetting one very important thing. If you have two kimbers, you can dual wield them. And how cool would that be?
i'm sure the ed brown is nice, though i can't say from experience. if i were made of money or my wife and kid never wanted to buy anything for themselves, i'd love to own one.
however...
if it were my choice, i'd get two dan wessons. better customer service and QC than kimber (IMO). it's nice to see that the wessons are catching on here more and more. you can't hardly have a thread about kimber, colt, or springfield 1911s without a few folks suggesting you take a look at DW.
one in .45 and one in 10mm sounds just about perfect.
