(TX) In need of a new gun shop

I haven't been too impressed with Heritage Firearms, since the new management took over. They seem to treat people a bit more coolly that the previous folks.

I live about a block away from Red's in Oak Hill, and they have always been great to me. I went to Cook's twice before Red's took over, and was talked down to each time. The staff is a lot better now.

Twice a year at McBride's (April and October, I think) they have a 12-month no finance charges sale. I can pay off just about anything in 12 months, so have taken advantage of it a few times.

Just for sheer drool factor, go by Texas Red's in Fredricksburg.

I just never realized how many of us Central Texans are on this board.

THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR THE COMMENTS AND HELP
I just want to say that because I notice it seems left out sometimes..

Now for the next part I just need money....((ok it was worth a go y'all can't blame me for trying)) :D

Drizzt,
Where is Texas Red's located at, in Fredericksberg? Sounds like a good side trip on the way to the ranch...

Someone else mentioned the gun shop that used to be down on south Congress. If you're thinking about 'Just Guns', I heard that they've closed their public shop and are just doing gun shows now.

Do any of y'all central Texas folks shoot IDPA? I've shot a few matches up at Temple (they're very nice folks), and I keep intended to get out to the Texas Tactical matches. I probably will now that I'm getting into reloading.

The original shop on South Congress closed last year, rents in that area have risen as it becomes more trendy. However, Hank and the gun shop have relocated further south (On congress I think....). South of 71, then south of the tracks, they're behind a pawn shop on the west side of the road. Not easy to find unfortunately.

There is a nice little shop in South Austin called 'Tex-Guns' at 5330 D Manchaca Rd. Take IH-35 north the exit Ben White/290 West to San Antonio.

Checked this shop out last night. Very helpful staff and a great selection of C&R rifles. A .308 Indian Enfield almost followed me home. :D

They have a great selection, and I've found the people there a lot nicer than the ones at Champion
Really? I have always found the guys in Champion to be among the most knowledgeable and friendly of any gun store I have been to.

Ho Guns Sporting in San Antonio off Culebra has very good prices. The gunsmith Chris is the best kept secret in the smith world. he does outstanding work and is priced very nice.

Wayne, the owner, has good pricing on new and used guns.

i am with JSalcedo on Texas Guns and they are way overpriced.

In San Antonio, Dury's is the best shop I have found. Good prices, great selection and a friendly and knowledgeable staff. The haven't been in business since 1959 for nothing. Check them out.

I've always had good experiences at Heritage, especially since David (one of the co-owners) sold out to another guy, Dick, a few months ago. I go window shopping at McBride's, and buy my Blackpowder stuff there, since they're the only ones around that have it, but for real shopping, I go to Heritage. They're knowledgeable, have a good selection, and as said, they'll order anything that their distributors can get. Their selection of holsters is pretty good too. They are small, but not as small as cost+10, and sometimes their ammo prices beat Academy and Oshman's.
Red's north doesn't do much for me - nothing in particular wrong with it, I just like Heritage better - and I don't go south very often.

I stopped in there twice. Each time, there were a couple of the owner's buddies in there jawing with him, and I was made to feel invisible. They weren't overtly rude or anything, but they were clearly more interested in their BS-ing than they were in making a potential sale.

I used to shoot a lot with the McCords at the matches they put on (CenTex IDPA) but about the time they got out of it (Marc's movie armorer business took off, with stuff like Secondhand Lions and The Alamo) Tx Tactical came in, but then I started traveling more for work. :(

But it looks like I'll be doing less travel, and will be more active again . . . I can just feel my skills deteriorating. Hopefully, I'll hit Tx Tactical's carbine match this afternoon. :D

With all the THR-ers around Austin, we should consider having a THR shoot at one of the local ranges . . . hmmm . . .

I'm too far north to be submitting gun store recommendations per the original post (Unless you want to know about Waco - Stephenville)

But start talking about a Cen-Tex Shoot and I'm in.

Smoke - in Bosque County

I'm definitely in. I shoot with a couple of friends every Tuesday night at Red's north. Keep me posted.

MacPelto,
I'm with you there about the pleasant change at Heritage.

I'd like a CenTex shoot, too. Not much on indoor ranges--prefer outdoors. I usually shoot at Eagle Peak out in Leander. It's a small, family-owned range where people mind their own business. I am not in favor of that range that's out near Manor. Went there for my CHL shootin' test, and saw a lot of what looked like gang members there. I've also heard from other shooters, years ago, that that range isn't real safe.
